Book Historical Sketch and Roster of the Virginia 45th Infantry Regiment

Download or read book Historical Sketch and Roster of the Virginia 45th Infantry Regiment written by John C. Rigdon and published by Virginia Regimental History. This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1861, a Battle Cry of Freedom rang out across the hills and valleys of western Virginia. For the mountaineers of Virginia, there were definitely shades of gray, with some being strongly Confederate and others having family ties to the Union. While the men fought and died all across the battlefields of Virginia and at Gettysburg, the Confederate Women remained unvanquished. This book includes almost 50 letters from and to sweethearts left at home to face the war alone. The Virginia 45th Infantry Regiment (which was sometimes incorrectly identified as the 4th Virginia Infantry) was formed in May, 1861, with men from Tazewell, Wythe, Grayson, Carroll, and Bland counties. It was first assigned to Echols', G.C. Wharton's, and Forsberg's Brigade, and served in Western Virginia. It was then assigned to duty in the Army of the Kanawha. It fought mostly in the mountainous area that today encompasses the border regions of Virginia and West Virginia, and was part of Jubal Early's Army of the Valley during the Valley Campaigns of 1864. The 45th missed most of the major battles in Virginia, but their duty was not light. It served in the Department of Western Virginia, the Army of Western Virginia, the Army of Western Virginia and East Tennessee, and back in the Department of Western Virginia before ending its service in the Army of the Valley District. The regiment's original commanding officer, Henry Heth, was promoted to the rank of Brigadier-General on January 6, 1862. Nominated to the rank of Major-General, effective October 10, 1862, this nomination was not approved by the Confederate Congress. He was re-nominated to this rank on May 24, 1863, and this time his promotion was approved. He held this rank for the duration of the war. Troops of Heth's division opened the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on July 1, 1863. The regiment fought at Carnifex Ferry, reporting 26 killed, 96 wounded, 46 captured, and 6 missing in the fight at Cloyd's Mountain; then saw action in the Shenandoah Valley. It sustained many casualties at Third Winchester. When the news of the surrender of Confederate forces under General Lee reached the area in which the Forty-Fifth Infantry was stationed, it was decided to disband the unit rather than continue resistance. Company A - "The Floyd Guard"; Capt. Joseph Harrison. Comprised of men from Tazewell County. Company B - "The Mount Airy Rough and Ready"; Capt. John Buchanan. Wythe County men. Book excerpt: The untold story of the bloodiest and most dramatic march to victory of the Second World War—now a Netflix original series starring Jose Miguel Vasquez, Bryan Hibbard, and Bradley James “Exceptional . . . worthy addition to vibrant classics of small-unit history like Stephen Ambrose’s Band of Brothers.”—Wall Street Journal Written with Alex Kershaw's trademark narrative drive and vivid immediacy, The Liberator traces the remarkable battlefield journey of maverick U.S. Army officer Felix Sparks through the Allied liberation of Europe—from the first landing in Italy to the final death throes of the Third Reich. Over five hundred bloody days, Sparks and his infantry unit battled from the beaches of Sicily through the mountains of Italy and France, ultimately enduring bitter and desperate winter combat against the die-hard SS on the Fatherland's borders. Having miraculously survived the long, bloody march across Europe, Sparks was selected to lead a final charge to Bavaria, where he and his men experienced some of the most intense street fighting suffered by Americans in World War II. And when he finally arrived at the gates of Dachau, Sparks confronted scenes that robbed the mind of reason—and put his humanity to the ultimate test.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preferring anonymity, Murdoch John McSween wrote over 80 letters under the pseudonym "Long Grabs" to the Fayetteville Observer (North Carolina), serving as their unofficial war correspondent. For the first two full years of the war, 1862-1863, he was a sometimes drill master at Camp Mangum, in Raleigh, and a wanderer among the regiments in North Carolina and Virginia. What he wrote was varied--the fighting in eastern North Carolina and at Fredericksburg and Petersburg in Virginia, the conditions of the soldiers, the hardships of the civilians, the history of places he visited, and biographical sketches such as that of Jefferson Davis. In 1863, based on certain promises made by Colonel Matt Ransom, McSween joined the 35th Regiment. A bitter dispute soon developed over those promises with the result that McSween was court-martialed and sentenced to twelve months at hard labor. Released, he joins the 26th Regiment and is twice wounded at the Battle of Petersburg. After the war, he returns to Fayetteville where he edits and publishes The Eagle newspaper.

Book excerpt: He left no doubt of the central role religion played in the lives of countless mid-19th-century Americans, as well as the inestimable importance of home and family. In short, this testimony does more than help us, at a distance of more than a century and a third, understand the day-to-day process by which soldiers went about the business of living and campaigning. It also illuminates the broader context of the world in which the Fitzpatricks and millions of other Civil War-era Americans lived.

Book The Battle of White Sulphur Springs

Download or read book The Battle of White Sulphur Springs written by Eric J. Wittenberg and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2011-11-09 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though West Virginia was founded for the purpose of remaining loyal to the Union, severing ties with Virginia, home of the capital of the Confederacy, would prove difficult. West Virginia's fate would be tested on its battlegrounds. In August 1863, Union general William Woods Averell led a six-hundred-mile raid culminating in the Battle of White Sulphur Springs in Green Brier County. Colonel George S. Patton, grandfather of the legendary World War II general, met Averell with a dedicated Confederate force. After a fierce two-day battle, Patton defeated Averell, forcing him to retreat and leave West Virginia, and ultimately the Union, in the balance. Civil War historian Eric J. Wittenberg presents a fascinating in-depth analysis of the proceedings in the first book-length study of this important battle.
