He joined the Surrealist movement in 1929 but by 1932 had renounced it and embraced Communism. During the Spanish Civil War (1936–39), he played an integral role in disseminating film propaganda in Paris for the Spanish Republican cause. Luis Buñuel: The Red Years, 1929–1939 investigates Buñuel’s commitment to making the politicized documentary Land without Bread (1933) and his key role as an executive producer at Filmófono in Madrid, where he was responsible in 1935–36 for making four commercial features that prefigure his work in Mexico after 1946. As for the republics of France and Spain between which Buñuel shuttled during the 1930s, these became equally embattled as left and right totalitarianisms fought to wrest political power away from a debilitated capitalism. Where it exists, the literature on this crucial decade of the film director’s life is scant and relies on Buñuel’s own self-interested accounts of that complex period. Román Gubern and Paul Hammond have undertaken extensive archival research in Europe and the United States and evaluated Buñuel’s accounts and those of historians and film writers to achieve a portrait of Buñuel’s “Red Years” that abounds in new information.

More a creator than a producer, Querejeta’s production style is unique, as he most regularly has a hand in every artistic aspect of the filmmaking process. As this book shows, his vast body of work is unified by a particular visual concern with landscape. Through this emphasis on space, his films have consistently documented the dramatic historical and social transformations of a country in the grip of modernization from the 1960s to the present day. In particular, this book investigates the ways in which landscape can be understood as a site of political contestation during these years. Whether rural or urban, landscape in his films emerges as a terrain of political struggle, which was first directed against Francoism in the 1960s and 1970s, and later in the democratic period, against Spain embrace of neoliberal capitalism. This is the first book in English to focus entirely on the films of Elías Querejeta, and is one of the first studies of its kind to organize its focus around the work of producer; moreover, the first book-length study on the representation of landscape in Spanish film. From this perspective, Documenting Cityscapes explores the way the city has been depicted by nonfiction filmmakers since the late 1970s, paying particular attention to three aesthetic tendencies: documentary landscaping, urban self-portraits, and metafilmic strategies. Through the formal analysis of fifteen works from six different countries, this volume investigates how the rise of subjectivity has helped to develop a kind of gaze that is closer to citizens than to the institutions and corporations responsible for recent major transformations. Documenting Cityscapes therefore reveals the extent to which cinema has become an agent of urban change, in which certain films not only challenge the most controversial policies of late capitalism but also are able to produce spatiality themselves.
