Book Victorian Automata

Download or read book Victorian Automata written by Suzy Anger and published by . This book was released on 2024-03-20 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between lifelike machines and mechanistic human behaviour provoked both fascination and anxiety in Victorian culture. This collection is the first to examine the widespread cultural interest in automata - both human and mechanical - in the nineteenth century. It was in the Victorian period that industrialization first met information technology, and that theories of physical and mental human automatism became essential to both scientific and popular understandings of thought and action. Bringing together essays by a multidisciplinary group of leading scholars, this volume explores what it means to be human in a scientific and industrial age. It also considers how Victorian inquiry and practices continue to shape current thought on race, creativity, mind, and agency. Book The Reception of Darwinian Evolution in Britain 1859 1909

Download or read book The Reception of Darwinian Evolution in Britain 1859 1909 written by Martin Hewitt and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-10-20 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Reception of Darwinian Evolution in Britain, 1859-1909: Darwinism's Generations uses the impact of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species (1859) in the 50 years after its publication to demonstrate the effectiveness of a generational framework for understanding the cultural and intellectual history of Britain in the nineteenth century. It challenges conventional notions of the 'Darwinian Revolution' by examining how people from across all sections of society actually responded to Darwin's writings. Drawing on the opinions and interventions of over 2,000 Victorians, drawn from an exceptionally wide range of archival and printed sources, it argues that the spread of Darwinian belief was slower, more complicated, more stratified by age, and ultimately shaped far more powerfully by divergent generational responses, than has previously been recognised. In doing so, it makes a number of important contributions. It offers by far the richest and most comprehensive account to date of how contemporaries came to terms with the intellectual and emotional shocks of evolutionary theory. It makes a compelling case for taking proper account of age as a fundamental historical dynamic, and for the powerful generational patternings of the effects that age produced. It demonstrates the extent to which the most common sub-periodisation of the Victorian period are best understood not merely as constituted by the exigencies of events, but are also formed by the shifting balance generational influence. Taken together these insights present a significant challenge to the ways historians currently approach the task of describing the nature and experience of historical change, and have fundamental implications for our current conceptions of the shape and pace of historical time.

Book G H Lewes

Download or read book G H Lewes written by Rosemary Ashton and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1991 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A journalist, novelist, playwright, and actor, Lewes was an unconventional Victorian, friend of Dickens, Thackeray, and Darwin, and author of Life of Goethe. A radical, freethinking Bohemian, he enjoyed an open marriage with Agnes Jervis, causing a scandal by condoning her relationship with his best friend. The first section of the book discovers new facets of Lewes's early life. The middle section discusses his elopement with Marian Evans while the final section concentrates on their emotional and intellectual companionship until Lewes's death in 1878. This section covers the years of Marian Evans's success as George Eliot, the acceptance of their unconventional union in society, and his science fiction work and support for Darwin. Throwing new light on a wide circle of important figures in the Victorian era, this biography draws on new material to illuminate the life of this extraordinary man of letters.

Book The New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature Volume 5 Index

Download or read book The New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature Volume 5 Index written by George Watson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1977-06-16 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than fifty specialists have contributed to the new edition of volume 5 of the Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature. The design of the original work has established itself so firmly as a workable solution to the immense problems of analysis, articulation and coordination that it has been retained in all its essentials for the new edition. The task of the new contributors has been to revise and integrate the lists of 1940 and 1957, to add materials of the following decade, to correct and refine the bibliographical details already available, and to re-shape the whole according to a new series of conventions devised to give greater clarity and consistency to the entries.
