Book Epstein Barr Virus Protocols

Download or read book Epstein Barr Virus Protocols written by Joanna B. Wilson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-03-23 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joanna Wilson and Gerhard May have assembled a collection of the key molecular biology protocols used in the analysis of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), along with a series of valuable immunology, cell biology, and transgenic mouse protocols. These readily reproducible techniques include methods for gene expression with mini-EBV plasmids, for expression analysis by FISH, for EBV detection and quantitation, and for cell proliferation and death assays. In addition, there are EBV-based vectors, an up-to-date map of EBV, a comprehensive table of available latent protein antisera, and assays from in vitro to cell to organ to organism levels. Timely and highly practical, Epstein-Barr Virus Protocols provides powerful tools for elucidating the life cycle of EBV and its host interactions, work that promises the emergence of major new treatments and cures for EBV associated diseases, including several forms of human cancer.

Book Engineering of Stem Cells

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ulrich Martin
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2009-10-15
  • ISBN : 3540888055
  • Pages : 249 pages

Download or read book Engineering of Stem Cells written by Ulrich Martin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-10-15 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am very pleased to present this volume on engineering stem cells in Advances in Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology. This volume stays abreast of recent developments in stem cell biology and the high expectations concerning the dev- opment of stem cell based regenerative therapies. Regenerative medicine is the focus of current biomedical research, with unique challenges related to scientific, technical and ethical issues of stem cell research, and the potential added value of connecting biomedicine with enabling techno- gies such as materials sciences, mechanical- and nano-engineering. Research activities in regenerative medicine include strategies in endogenous regeneration of injured or degenerated tissues by means of gene therapy or cell transplantation, as well as complex approaches to replace or reconstruct lost or malformed tissue structures, by applying tissue engineering approaches. In most cases, the speci- ized functional cell types of interest cannot be isolated from the diseased organ or expanded to a sufficient degree, and various stem and progenitor cell types rep- sent the only applicable cell source. In almost all cases, stem cells have to be engineered, sometimes for functional improvement, in many cases to produce large numbers of cells, and frequently to achieve efficient and specific differentiation in the cell type(s) of interest.

Book Optical Sensor Systems in Biotechnology

Download or read book Optical Sensor Systems in Biotechnology written by Govind Rao and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-11-03 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all things natural, light is the most sublime. From the very existential belief of the origins of the universe to its role in the evolution of life on earth, light has been inextricably woven into every aspect of our lives. I am grateful to Springer-Verlag and Thomas Scheper for this invitation to organize this volume that continues to expand the use of light to create next generation sensing applications. Indeed, the very act of expanding the frontiers of learning and knowledge are referred to in many languages and cultures as enlightenment. Early optical instruments relied largely on simple combinations of mirrors, prisms and lenses. With these simple devices, substantial progress was made in our understanding of the properties of light and of its interactions with matter. Things got more complicated with the evolution of optical instruments in labo- tory use. Early systems used bulky and expensive hardware to generate light, split it into the desired wavelengths and finally collect it for analysis. The discovery of the laser pushed the technology further, but did not do much to make its adoption more widespread as the lasers themselves were large and required substantial el- trical power to operate. The true revolution is just beginning. Advances in mic- electronics have resulted in the possibility of truly low-cost (using the consumer electronics industry as a parallel) devices that exploit optical measurement technology.

Book Biotechnology in China I

Download or read book Biotechnology in China I written by Jian-Jiang Zhong and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-09-19 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, biotechnology research and development (R&D) in China has been receiving increasing attention from the world. With the open-door policy of the Chinese government, many international publications (for academia) and large market potential (for industry) constitute the two big reasons for the above phen- enon. Biotechnology has become one of the priorities in Mainland China for so- ing many important problems, such as food supply, health care, environment protection, and even energy. The central government has been implementing a c- ple of programs which cover a wide spectrum in basic research, high-tech devel- ment and industrialization, such as Basic Research Program (973 Plan), Hi-Tech R&D Program (863 Plan), Key Science & Technology Problem Solving Program (Gong-guan Plan), as well as the establishment of centers of excellence - Key Laboratories and Engineering Centers, etc. The funding from various local gove- ments and industry for R&D has also been increasing continuously. Biotechnology centers in Shenzhen, Shanghai and Beijing have been established. There are more than 400 universities, research institutes and companies and a total of over 20,000 researchers involved in biotechnology in the Mainland. The number of research papers published internationally and patent applications is also increasing rapidly. In addition, the huge market potential with about 1. 4 billion population, which is already open to the outside world, has provided numerous opportunities for int- national and domestic companies to invest in biotechnology, which pushes forward the biotechnology industrialization in China.

Book Haptic Human Computer Interaction

Download or read book Haptic Human Computer Interaction written by Stephen Brewster and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-05-15 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Haptic human-computer interaction is interaction between a human computer user and the computer user interface based on the powerful human sense of touch. Haptic hardware has been discussed and exploited for some time, particularly in the context of computer games. However, so far, little attention has been paid to the general principles of haptic HCI and the systematic use of haptic devices for improving efficiency, effectiveness, and satisfaction in HCI. This book is the first one to focus on haptic human-computer interaction. It is based on a workshop held in Glasgow, UK, in August / September 2000. The 22 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 35 submissions. Besides a brief historic survey, the book offers topical sections on haptic interfaces for blind people, collaborative haptics, psychological issues and measurement, and applications of haptics.
