Book Adaptation Biology and Medicine

Download or read book Adaptation Biology and Medicine written by A. Hargens and published by Alpha Science Int'l Ltd.. This book was released on 2005-03 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recognition of adaptive processes in biological systems as a discipline is still in its infancy. It is known that repeat exposure to low level stresses such as heat, cold, microgravity, hypoxia, exercise, etc. increases body-resistance to not only the particular stress but also to other conditions. Such a cross-protection can be utilized in a better patient care. This volume describes most current developments in the understanding of the molecular basis of adaptation as well as its application in biological systems including certain disease conditions in humans. The book is based on the presentations made by internationally known experts assembled in San Diego, USA for the 7th World Congress of the International Society for Adaptive Medicine and will be of great interest to experimental biologists as well as clinicians who deal with a wide variety of clinical conditions.

This book was released on 2019-12-27 with total page 621 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children are the foundation of the United States, and supporting them is a key component of building a successful future. However, millions of children face health inequities that compromise their development, well-being, and long-term outcomes, despite substantial scientific evidence about how those adversities contribute to poor health. Advancements in neurobiological and socio-behavioral science show that critical biological systems develop in the prenatal through early childhood periods, and neurobiological development is extremely responsive to environmental influences during these stages. Consequently, social, economic, cultural, and environmental factors significantly affect a child's health ecosystem and ability to thrive throughout adulthood. Vibrant and Healthy Kids: Aligning Science, Practice, and Policy to Advance Health Equity builds upon and updates research from Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity (2017) and From Neurons to Neighborhoods: The Science of Early Childhood Development (2000). This report provides a brief overview of stressors that affect childhood development and health, a framework for applying current brain and development science to the real world, a roadmap for implementing tailored interventions, and recommendations about improving systems to better align with our understanding of the significant impact of health equity.

Book Growth Hormone Secretagogues

Download or read book Growth Hormone Secretagogues written by E. Ghigo and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1999-09-07 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growth hormone secretagogues (GHS) administered alone or in combination with growth hormone releasing hexapeptides, are effective probes for the diagnosis of GH deficiency in both children and adults. Current research has developed and tested different GHS compounds that are active by the oral route, and have improved potency and bioavailability, giving rise to exciting therapeutic possibilities. There was an enthusiastic response from experts in this area to the idea of distilling the huge amount of available data into one multi-authored volume. Each contributor has advanced the field of knowledge, and has here emphasized the practical aspects of their work, reviewing the subject in the light of their own experience. Therefore, the theme of the book is a practical one. The volume deals with all aspects of GHS that are relevant to the field, from the chemical structure to the different analogues, to the cloning and expression of the GHS-receptor and the role of these compounds in the physiological control of GH secretion. Also discussed are the most recent advances in relation to the possible role of these compounds in the diagnostic therapeutic settings in different clinical situations, either in children, adults or the elderly. The book meets the requirement of covering most, if not all of the advances in the field. It will enable scientists and clinicians to keep abreast of the rapidly evolving knowledge of the most recent years, and will also prove useful as a review for all interested in this topic.

Book Congenital Abnormalities and Preterm Birth Related to Maternal Illnesses During Pregnancy

Download or read book Congenital Abnormalities and Preterm Birth Related to Maternal Illnesses During Pregnancy written by Nándor Ács and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-07-05 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major objective of our studies in the last decade was a systematic analysis of maternal diseases during pregnancy to reveal their possible adverse effects on birth outcomes. The two most important factors of infant mortality were parti- larly analyzed: structural birth defects, known as congenital abnormalities (CAs) and preterm birth (PB). In general the objectives of scienti c studies might be either to test a new hypothesis or to con rm or confront previously published results. However, less frequently the authors/scientists have personal motivations determined by their professional activities. The authors of this book are practicing physicians and genetic epidemiologist who are mainly interested in the following three practical questions: 1. The possible adverse effects of pharmaceutical products. The possible t- atogenic potential of about 170 drugs has been evaluated very thoroughly using the data set of the Hungarian Case-Control Surveillance of Congenital Abnormalities (HCCSCA) in the last 50 years. These drugs were used to treat maternal diseases and the ndings of our population-based case-control studies will be cited in this book and are shown in the Appendix at the end of the book. However, our long experiences showed two problems in the drug teratology. In general the evaluation of clinical doses of these drugs is a particularly dif- cult challenge due to the modi cation effects of confounders. This problem motivated one of the authors to establish a new model of disaster epidemiology.
