Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africana Theory, Policy, and Leadership is an eclectic work that examines Africana issues from multiple angles, including literature, ethnography, gender, aesthetics, and diversity. The contributors to this volume add unique and insightful works to the collection of research and writing documenting the pan-African experience. Conyers offers the reader an interdisciplinary approach to the study of people of African descent with special emphasis on the black population of the United States. This collection addresses a wide range of topics. "Africana Literature as Social Science" reviews the scholarship of August Wilson and Suzan Lori-Parks. "How Homeland Eritrea Monitors Its American Diaspora" analyses Eritrean government-diaspora tensions. "Toward Theorizing Gender without Feminism" and "Are Black Women the New Mules of the Prison Industrial Complex?" illustrates the double burden of race and gender borne by black women. "Africana Aesthetics" documents black life in post-Civil War Texas with photos. "Africana Studies and Diversity" explores the struggle to maintain athletic programs at historically black colleges. "The Africana Idea in Leadership Studies" offers an Afrocentric approach to the study of critical theory in leadership. Book The Comics of Julie Doucet and Gabrielle Bell

Download or read book The Comics of Julie Doucet and Gabrielle Bell written by Tahneer Oksman and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2018-12-05 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2020 Comics Studies Society Edited Book Prize Contributions by Kylie Cardell, Aaron Cometbus, Margaret Galvan, Sarah Hildebrand, Frederik Byrn Køhlert, Tahneer Oksman, Seamus O’Malley, Annie Mok, Dan Nadel, Natalie Pendergast, Sarah Richardson, Jessica Stark, and James Yeh In a self-reflexive way, Julie Doucet’s and Gabrielle Bell’s comics, though often autobiographical, defy easy categorization. In this volume, editors Tahneer Oksman and Seamus O’Malley regard Doucet’s and Bell’s art as actively feminist, not only because they offer women’s perspectives, but because they do so by provocatively bringing up the complicated, multivalent frameworks of such engagements. While each artist has a unique perspective, style, and worldview, the essays in this book investigate their shared investments in formal innovation and experimentation, and in playing with questions of the autobiographical, the fantastic, and the spaces in between. Doucet is a Canadian underground cartoonist, known for her autobiographical works such as Dirty Plotte and My New York Diary. Meanwhile, Bell is a British American cartoonist best known for her intensely introspective semiautobiographical comics and graphic memoirs, such as the Lucky series and Cecil and Jordan in New York. By pairing Doucet alongside Bell, the book recognizes the significance of female networks, and the social and cultural connections, associations, and conditions that shape every work of art. In addition to original essays, this volume republishes interviews with the artists. By reading Doucet’s and Bell’s comics together in this volume housed in a series devoted to single-creator studies, the book shows how, despite the importance of finding “a place inside yourself” to create, this space seems always for better or worse a shared space culled from and subject to surrounding lives, experiences, and subjectivities.

Book African American

  • Author : Marilyn Halter
  • Publisher : NYU Press
  • Release : 2014-08-29
  • ISBN : 0814760589
  • Pages : 348 pages

Download or read book African American written by Marilyn Halter and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2014-08-29 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines what it means to be African and American through the stories of recent West African immigrants African & American tells the story of the much overlooked experience of first and second generation West African immigrants and refugees in the United States during the last forty years. Interrogating the complex role of post-colonialism in the recent history of black America, Marilyn Halter and Violet Showers Johnson highlight the intricate patterns of emigrant work and family adaptation, the evolving global ties with Africa and Europe, and the translocal connections among the West African enclaves in the United States. Drawing on a rich variety of sources, including original interviews, personal narratives, cultural and historical analysis, and documentary and demographic evidence, African & American explores issues of cultural identity formation and socioeconomic incorporation among this new West African diaspora. Bringing the experiences of those of recent African ancestry from the periphery to the center of current debates in the fields of immigration, ethnic, and African American studies, Halter and Johnson examine the impact this community has had on the changing meaning of “African Americanness” and address the provocative question of whether West African immigrants are, indeed, becoming the newest African Americans.

Book Time in the Black Experience

Download or read book Time in the Black Experience written by Joseph K. Adjaye and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1994-05-25 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first book which deals entirely with the subject of time in Africa and the Black Diaspora, Adjaye presents ten critical case studies of selected communities in Africa, the Caribbean, and the American South. The essays cover a wide spectrum of manifestations of temporal experience, including cosmological and genealogical time, physical and ecological cycles, time and worldview, social rhythm, agricultural and industrial time, and historical processes and consciousness. The studies confirm the continuity of temporal experience among Africans from pre-colonial times, through the colonial period in Africa, across continents through slavery and Maroon societies, to present-day communities like the Gullah of the Sea Islands of South Carolina. The subject of time, now recognized to be relative rather than uniform, draws together evidence from a variety of disciplines, specifically history, linguistics, political science, anthropology, and philosophy.
