Book Race and Retail

Download or read book Race and Retail written by Mia Bay and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Race has long shaped shopping experiences for many Americans. Retail exchanges and establishments have made headlines as flashpoints for conflict not only between blacks and whites, but also between whites, Mexicans, Asian Americans, and a wide variety of other ethnic groups, who have at times found themselves unwelcome at white-owned businesses. Race and Retail documents the extent to which retail establishments, both past and present, have often catered to specific ethnic and racial groups. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the original essays collected here explore selling and buying practices of nonwhite populations around the world and the barriers that shape these habits, such as racial discrimination, food deserts, and gentrification. The contributors highlight more contemporary issues by raising questions about how race informs business owners’ ideas about consumer demand, resulting in substandard quality and higher prices for minorities than in predominantly white neighborhoods. In a wide-ranging exploration of the subject, they also address revitalization and gentrification in South Korean and Latino neighborhoods in California, Arab and Turkish coffeehouses and hookah lounges in South Paterson, New Jersey, and tourist capoeira consumption in Brazil. Race and Retail illuminates the complex play of forces at work in racialized retail markets and the everyday impact of those forces on minority consumers. The essays demonstrate how past practice remains in force in subtle and not-so-subtle ways.

Download or read book Samak the Ayyar written by and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The adventures of Samak, a trickster-warrior hero of Persia’s thousand-year-old oral storytelling tradition, are beloved in Iran. Samak is an ayyar, a warrior who comes from the common people and embodies the ideals of loyalty, selflessness, and honor—a figure that recalls samurai, ronin, and knights yet is distinctive to Persian legend. His exploits—set against an epic background of palace intrigue, battlefield heroics, and star-crossed romance between a noble prince and princess—are as deeply rooted in Persian culture as are the stories of Robin Hood and King Arthur in the West. However, this majestic tale has remained little known outside Iran. Translated from the original Persian by Freydoon Rassouli and adapted by Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner, this timeless masterwork can now be enjoyed by English-speaking readers. A thrilling and suspenseful saga, Samak the Ayyar also offers a vivid portrait of Persia a thousand years ago. Within an epic quest narrative teeming with action and supernatural forces, it sheds light on the lives of ordinary people and their social worlds. This is the first complete English-language version of a treasure of world culture. The translation is grounded in the twelfth-century Persian text while paying homage to the dynamic culture of storytelling from which it arose.

Her hair swings; her makeup is natural, but lush; her clothes original, but classic. She&'s delightful and sophisticated. She&'s irresistible. She&'s quintessential big city. Rarely does a style book come along that is practical, real, and much more than the usual pie-in-the-sky beauty lecture. Big City Look is a celebrity-studded how-to by Vincent Roppatte, Saks Fifth Avenue&'s master beauty stylist and spokesman for Elizabeth Arden Red Door Salons. Vincent is a legend in his field, and the most celebrated women in the world are his friends and clients. His book, Big City Look, clearly deconstructs the extraordinary and stylish appeal of urban women in different regions of the country. What secrets does that feminine and gorgeous Atlantan woman keep--the secrets that bestow the southern Big City Look? How does that radiant Chicagoan manage to look so classy--even when plowing through the legendary snow and wind? That Dallas delight--how does she dress and wear her hair to give her such seductive and stylish advantage, such captivating attitude? What&'s the Washington, D.C., style formula--the one that bestows that insider in-control allure on that important capital woman? How does that enchanting L.A. woman manage to epitomize the glamorous heart of Hollywood? Understanding and being able to duplicate these fashion, makeup, and hair secrets results in a smashing, appropriate, and wonderful look. Even if you live in a tiny village and are on a small-town budget, the look of urban style can be yours. Book A Model Summer

  • Author : Paulina Porizkova
  • Publisher : Hachette+ORM
  • Release : 2006-06-01
  • ISBN : 1401387527
  • Pages : 286 pages

Download or read book A Model Summer written by Paulina Porizkova and published by Hachette+ORM. This book was released on 2006-06-01 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An incisive, beautifully written first novel by a former supermodel that explores the glamorous and gritty world she inhabited Only a handful of women in the world have experienced what Paulina Porizkova has--being whisked away to model in Paris while still a teenager, reaching the pinnacle of the profession before her schoolmates had even graduated--and fewer still have the insight to capture it on paper. In her first novel, Paulina tells the story of Jirina. A tall, scrawny fifteen-year-old girl from Sweden, she's much more accustomed to taunts and disdain than admiration and affection, whether from her classmates or her own family. That all changes when her only friend, Hatty, asks to practice her makeup and photography skills on Jirina. Almost before she knows it Jirina is on a plane to Paris, where she will spend the summer in a milieu entirely alien to her. Living at the home of her modeling agency's owner and constantly subjected to blunt physical assessments, catty and often cruel fellow models, and womanizing photographers--and, miraculously enough, while sometimes feeling truly beautiful--Jirina embarks on a journey beyond her wildest imaginings. Between photo shoots in Italy and Morocco and parties with models and musicians, Jirina manages to make a few friends, fall in love, and, eventually, feel the very adult pain of betrayal and heartbreak. Told with the grace, simplicity, and accuracy that can only come from real-life experience, A Model Summer is both the debut of a notably talented novelist and an unusually well-informed look behind the scenes at a world many people fantasize about, but few really know.

Book Understanding Second Language Acquisition

Download or read book Understanding Second Language Acquisition written by Lourdes Ortega and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether we grow up with one, two, or several languages during our early years of life, many of us will learn a second, foreign, or heritage language in later years. The field of Second language acquisition (SLA, for short) investigates the human capacity to learn additional languages in late childhood, adolescence, or adulthood, after the first language --in the case of monolinguals-- or languages --in the case of bilinguals-- have already been acquired. Understanding Second Language Acquisition offers a wide-encompassing survey of this burgeoning field, its accumulated findings and proposed theories, its developed research paradigms, and its pending questions for the future. The book zooms in and out of universal, individual, and social forces, in each case evaluating the research findings that have been generated across diverse naturalistic and formal contexts for second language acquisition. It assumes no background in SLA and provides helpful chapter-by-chapter summaries and suggestions for further reading. Ideal as a textbook for students of applied linguistics, foreign language education, TESOL, and education, it is also recommended for students of linguistics, developmental psycholinguistics, psychology, and cognitive science. Supporting resources for tutors are available free at www.routledge.com/ortega.

Book The Incomplete Framley Examiner

Download or read book The Incomplete Framley Examiner written by The Editors and published by Unbound Publishing. This book was released on 2021-10-14 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2001, fans of the internet were introduced to scanned pages from spoof local newspaper The Framley Examiner. Packed with humdrum and preposterous news stories, classified ads, local business features and headlines that seemed to have been typed while asleep, it skewered the banal madness of small-town existence, perfectly encapsulating the British national character. Framley’s strange yet familiar community – stuffed with its own cast, insane geography and rich local history – struck a chord with those who recognised their own home towns in its reflection. The website was loved and shared by an eager public as well as famous fans from Little Britain, The Simpsons and the Cambridge Centre for Theoretical Cosmology (Professor Stephen Hawking was a Framley enthusiast). Marking the twentieth anniversary of the website's first appearance The Incomplete Framley Examiner combines the pages of the original book, published in 2002, with all the pages published online in the years since and brand new material for a bigger, more luxurious, toilet-proof compendium for the annals of history.
