Download or read book 335th Assault Helicopter Company written by Vance Gammons and published by . This book was released on 2019-08-27 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vance Gammons was the Company Commander of the 335th Assault Helicopter Company in an era like no other: the Vietnam War. At the time, none of the Cowboys--as they were called then and today--knew what would become of their lives if they were lucky enough to survive their time in country. It wasn't until a 2017 Cowboy Reunion that Gammons suggested they document their experiences after the war in a sociological exercise that would become this book. 335th Assault Helicopter Company: What We Did After the Vietnam War is a collection of their biographies, overflowing with stories of life after Vietnam, varied accomplishments and downfalls, and a continued support for our enduring nation, all in the words of not-so-famous, ordinary men.

Book excerpt: “Excellent . . . honest and realistic . . . Edward Murphy’s meticulous research is unflawed and his writing style is novel-like.”—San Antonio Express-News “A no-holds barred account . . . highly recommended.”—Military magazine In June 1967, General William Westmoreland sent the 173d Airborne Brigade to Dak To, a mountainous region in the deadly Central Highlands. Here the 173d found itself locked in mortal combat, facing tremendous odds against a professional, well-trained enemy hidden under triple-canopy jungle and deeply entrenched in fortified positions, bunkers, and tunnels. Edward F. Murray captures the conflict in all its horror and heroism in this graphic account drawn from letters, diaries, official reports, and interviews with more than eighty veterans of the campaign. Outmanned, exhausted, often cut off from supplies and communication, America’s “Sky Soldiers” battled back with incredible valor to rout the NVA in some of the fiercest combat of the entire Vietnam War. “Fast-paced . . . an impressive immediacy.”—Publishers Weekly

Book excerpt: The New York Times bestseller about West Point's Class of 1966, by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author Rick Atkinson. "A story of epic proportions [and] an awesome feat of biographical reconstruction."—The Boston Globe A classic of its kind, The Long Gray Line is the twenty-five-year saga of the West Point class of 1966. With a novelist's eye for detail, Rick Atkinson (author of the Liberation Trilogy) illuminates this powerful story through the lives of three classmates and the women they loved—from the boisterous cadet years, to the fires of Vietnam, to the hard peace and internal struggles that followed the war. The rich cast of characters also includes Douglas MacArthur, William C. Westmoreland, and a score of other memorable figures. The class of 1966 straddled a fault line in American history, and Atkinson's masterly book speaks for a generation of American men and women about innocence, patriotism, and the price we pay for our dreams

Book Clear Hold and Destroy

  • Author : Robert J. Thompson
  • Publisher : University of Oklahoma Press

Download or read book Clear Hold and Destroy written by Robert J. Thompson and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2021-05-06 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the end of the American War in Vietnam, the coastal province of Phú Yên was one of the least-secure provinces in the Republic of Vietnam. It was also a prominent target of the American strategy of pacification—an effort, purportedly separate and distinct from conventional warfare, to win the “hearts and minds” of the Vietnamese. In Robert J. Thompson III’s analysis, the consistent, and consistently unsuccessful, struggle to place Phú Yên under Saigon’s banner makes the province particularly fertile ground for studying how the Americans advanced pacification and why this effort ultimately failed. In March 1970 a disastrous military engagement began in Phú Yên, revealing the enemy’s continued presence after more than three years of pacification. Clear, Hold, and Destroy provides a fresh perspective on the war across multiple levels, from those making and implementing policy to those affected by it. Most pointedly, Thompson contends that pacification, far from existing apart from conventional warfare, actually depended on conventional military forces for its application. His study reaches back into Phú Yên’s storied history with pacification before and during the French colonial period, then focuses on the province from the onset of the American war in 1965 to its conclusion in 1975. A sharply focused, fine-grained analysis of one critical province during the Vietnam War, Thompson’s work demonstrates how pacification is better understood as the foundation of U.S. fighting in Vietnam.

Book excerpt: No one in Vietnam had to tell door gunner and gunship crew chief Al Sever that the odds didn’t look good. He volunteered for the job well aware that hanging out of slow-moving choppers over hot LZs blazing with enemy fire was not conducive to a long life. But that wasn’t going to stop Specialist Sever. From Da Nang to Cu Chi and the Mekong Delta, Sever spent thirty-one months in Vietnam, fighting in eleven of the war’s sixteen campaigns. Every morning when his gunship lifted off, often to the clacking and muzzle flashes of AK-47s hidden in the dawn fog, Sever knew he might not return. This raw, gritty, gut-wrenching firsthand account of American boys fighting and dying in Vietnam captures all the hell, horror, and heroism of that tragic war.
