Book Major Poems of the Hebrew Bible

Download or read book Major Poems of the Hebrew Bible written by Jan Fokkelman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume II of Major Poems of the Hebrew Bible deals with 85 Psalms (83 poems) and the poems in Job 4-14, and aims at presenting an integrated prosodical theory which is able to bypass the highly controversial question of metrics. There are two approaches which initially are kept apart on grounds of method: structural analysis and the counting of the original, i.e. pre-Masoretic, syllables. Each poem receives a compact description of structure which gives a reasoned delimitation of cola, verses, and strophes. In a separate operation, the syllable counts for each word, colon, verse, strophe, stanza, section and poem are recorded in a comprehensive Appendix. All the poems under discussion show a precise integer as the average of syllables per colon. For half of them this is 8.00, the others have either 7.00 or 9.00. The 9.00 is a ceiling: there is no Psalm with a higher average. Combining the two approaches, the author shows that the poets themselves did count their syllables, and how they were able to mesh the syllable figures with the structural units of their compositions in a virtuoso combination. The greatest challenge of this enterprise is to delimit and objectify the correct colometry for all the songs, as the figure of syllables per colon depends on the right amount of cola. There are only about 30 Psalms which have a cola figure that can be considered beyond doubt. Fortunately, in the Book of Job the correct number of cola is certain for most chapters. Here we meet the number 8 again as a normative figure

Book The House on Mango Street

Download or read book The House on Mango Street written by Sandra Cisneros and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2013-04-30 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A coming-of-age classic about a young girl growing up in Chicago • Acclaimed by critics, beloved by readers of all ages, taught in schools and universities alike, and translated around the world—from the winner of the 2019 PEN/Nabokov Award for Achievement in International Literature. “Cisneros draws on her rich [Latino] heritage...and seduces with precise, spare prose, creat[ing] unforgettable characters we want to lift off the page. She is not only a gifted writer, but an absolutely essential one.” —The New York Times Book Review The House on Mango Street is one of the most cherished novels of the last fifty years. Readers from all walks of life have fallen for the voice of Esperanza Cordero, growing up in Chicago and inventing for herself who and what she will become. “In English my name means hope,” she says. “In Spanish it means too many letters. It means sadness, it means waiting." Told in a series of vignettes—sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes joyous—Cisneros’s masterpiece is a classic story of childhood and self-discovery and one of the greatest neighborhood novels of all time. Like Sinclair Lewis’s Main Street or Toni Morrison’s Sula, it makes a world through people and their voices, and it does so in language that is poetic and direct. This gorgeous coming-of-age novel is a celebration of the power of telling one’s story and of being proud of where you're from.

Book Children Writing Poems

Download or read book Children Writing Poems written by Janine Certo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-10 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume demonstrates how the social and instructional worlds that children inhabit influence their poetry writing and performances. Drawing on rich vignettes of students from different racial, ethnic and linguistic backgrounds, it describes and analyzes the work of eight to ten-year-old U.S. students involved in a month-long poetry unit. Children Writing Poems outlines the value of a ‘poetic-functional’ approach to help children convey a poem’s meaning and mood, and expresses the need for educators to scaffold children’s oral readings and performances over time.

Book The Hundredfold

    Book Details:
  • Author : Anthony Esolen
  • Publisher : Ignatius Press
  • Release : 2019-08-26
  • ISBN : 1642290866
  • Pages : 226 pages

Download or read book The Hundredfold written by Anthony Esolen and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2019-08-26 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hundredfold is a tapestry of hymns, monologues, and short lyrics knit together as one book-length poem in praise of Christ in all his startling humanity. Drawing from the riches of the English poetic tradition—meter, rhyme, music—the poet considers the mysterious man from Nazareth and the world he came to set on fire with splendor. Having made a career translating the Italian masters Dante and Tasso, Anthony Esolen now puts on the dusty mantle of such English craftsmen as Donne, Milton, and Hopkins in his first book of original contemplative poetry. The Hundredfold contains dramatic monologues set in first-century Greece and Palestine; lyrical meditations on creation, longing, failure, modern emptiness, and unshakeable hope; and twenty-one brand-new hymns, set to such traditional melodies as “Picardy” and “Old One-Hundred-Twenty-Fourth”. The book includes an introduction with diamond-sharp insights into English poetic form—at a time when form is so often misunderstood, if not dismissed. It provides an invaluable resource for students, teachers, and poets themselves, as well as those who simply read poetry for pleasure.

Book Crucified For 33 Thoughts Spoken Word Poems

Download or read book Crucified For 33 Thoughts Spoken Word Poems written by Jackson Saint-Louis and published by Jackson Saint-Louis. This book was released on 2013-11-19 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written with the intentions of finding a common ground for readers and nonreaders through a series of stories that allows for a multitude of emotions including pain, sadness, love and euphoria to come to the surface. It challenges the reader to succumb to the honesty of certain aspects of their daily lives that many of us often become too numb to speak about. As inspiration stems from a hopeless situation, these unspoken words turn into stories that grasp our ears, hearts and attention, giving way to a new found understanding behind what was previously a misunderstood form of action. Whoever so dare speak these words would be crucified by those closes to them, hence the title Crucified for 33 thoughts. A heart-felt and compelling read that creates a canvas for imagination and honesty to blend and form each one of these spoken word poems. The realism of each poem will take readers on a journey they will not soon forget.
