Book 3 STORIES RAJSHEKHAR BASU

Download or read book 3 STORIES RAJSHEKHAR BASU written by Rajshekhar Basu and published by BEE Books. This book was released on 2020-10-20 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These three stories by Parashuram offer a short, yet vivid glimpse into the colourful cultural confusion of the colonial encounter in the hilarious world of the upper-middle-class Bengali. They playfully invert the colonial gaze, showing how the subjects viewed the ruler. But most importantly, these are stories of humour, implying, perhaps, that the ground on which two cultures collide is not necessarily just a space of conflict, but also a fertile ground on which laughter grows, uninhibited.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book A LUCID, NECESSARY ACCOUNT OF HOW DRASTICALLY THE INDIAN STATE FAILS ITS CITIZENS The story of democratic failure is usually read at the level of the nation, while the primary bulwarks of democratic functioning—the states—get overlooked. This is a tale of India’s states, of why they build schools but do not staff them with teachers; favour a handful of companies so much that others slip into losses; wage water wars with their neighbours while allowing rampant sand mining and groundwater extraction; harness citizens’ right to vote but brutally crack down on their right to dissent. Reporting from six states over thirty-three months, award-winning investigative journalist M. Rajshekhar delivers a necessary account of a deep crisis that has gone largely unexamined.

Book Narratives from the Margins

Download or read book Narratives from the Margins written by Sanjukta Das Gupta and published by Primus Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adivasis have principally been studied in the context of rebellion, environmental history and the politics of identity. However, preoccupations with definitions and notions of identity, while important in themselves, tend to shift attention away from the inner lives of these communities. This book deals with different aspects of the histories of adivasi communities -- from Rajasthan in the west to Bengal and Orissa in the east. The essays in this book discuss a range of issues affecting the socio-economic and cultural life of adivasis and explore the long term continuities and discontinuities between different political regimes. They also reflect some of the new concerns that have come up relating to methodology and sources, historiography and colonial concerns, the impact of missionaries, gender issues, the agrarian situation, famines and migration. Some of the issues addressed in this volume are the genesis and development of 'tribal' studies in India during the colonial period; the peasantization of adivasi groups and their assimilation within the Hindu caste fold as reflected in Tulsidas' Ramcharitmanas; the work of the Protestant missions among the Santals of Chotanagpur; the social and ritual relations between the Bhils and the Rajput ruling dynasties of Dungarpur in southern Rajasthan; the aspect of agrarian change among the Hos of Singhbhum; the factors behind the migration from Chotanagpur, its nature and organization and its impact upon the adivasi village community; the question of women's agency in colonial Chotanagpur; and an exploration of land rights, witchcraft, employment patterns and how women challenged patriarchy in their everyday lives; and the impact of globalisation and liberalization upon adivasis in contemporary India. The book will be of use to students and scholars of history, anthropology and sociology and also to policy-planners.

Book 3 STORIES ABANINDRANATH TAGORE

Download or read book 3 STORIES ABANINDRANATH TAGORE written by Abanindranath Tagore and published by BEE Books. This book was released on 2020-10-20 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three stories in this collection are united by a common theme of chivalry and sacrifice. It was said that Abanindranath Tagore used his pen as an artist uses a brush – to colour old tales and bring them to vivid life. The stories are filled with unforgettable vignettes of heated desert sands and filigreed balconies clinging to sheer mountain walls. Ancient battles and family sagas come to life and it is easy to see how these stories inspired many young freedom fighters to dare and dream of overthrowing their colonial masters. Whether today’s reader seeks inspiration or is simply entertained by these tales of Rajput valor, they are a magical window to the richness of Indian literature.

Her skill lies in building layered narratives where her words speak for the silences in society. They vividly illustrate that a society can steer its people towards questionable paths. But some people, especially her nuanced women characters, refuse to bow down. They stand by their morals. And sometimes they lose the battle, but more importantly, sometimes, they succeed.

Book excerpt: Parashuram, or Rajshekhar Bose (1880-1960), was one of the most eminent and versatile figures of twentieth-century Bengal. Best known for his comic and satirical writing, he was the author of the popular Bengali dictionary Chalantika, played an innovative role in Bengali printing technology, and was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1956. This book is a selection of Parashuram's best comic tales: most of the classic pieces from his earlier volumes, as well as his later, more fanciful work. While some present biting social satire, others reflect a lighter view of human folly or eccentricity. There are also stories in a rare vein of philosophic critique and speculation. Collectively, they reveal the changing patterns of Bengali society, thought and attitude over a span of about forty years. Parashuram worked closely with the artist Jatindrakuma Sen, and the earlier stories are inseparably linked with Sen's delightful illustrations, some of which have been reproduced in this edition.

He was born on 2nd October, 1869 during colonial period and died on 30th January, 1948 while India was independent. Between these two different perspectives of his life, he formulated and developed his political and philosophical ideas which he himself experienced in South Africa and India. Now the time has come to be reviewed/re-examined whether his political ideas and philosophy are relevant in the 21st Century, characterized by the problem of armed clashes, terrorism and the moral crisis of humanity. His ideas of Truth, Non-violence, Satyagraha, Sarvodaya etc. are to be re-examined to make these fit to be solved the present crises. His secular ideas of coexistence of all religions are more relevant than in his own time. Casteism is still a major problem in Indian politics. Can Gandhi’s concept of Harijan eradicate casteism and create a casteless society? Should Gandhian ideas of Democracy (not western type) and socialism (not Marxian type) be reviewed to solve the recent crises? The intellectuals and scholars coming from different parts of the country and the world will explore various aspects of Mahatma Gandhi's political and philosophical ideas for the question of humanity and morality which lack the present society and politics. The Book has important features and knowledge about Gandhian ideas and knowledge.

Book Language in Society in Bangladesh and Beyond

Download or read book Language in Society in Bangladesh and Beyond written by Shaila Sultana and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-29 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection presents a holistic picture of the sociolinguistic landscape in Bangladesh, offering a critical understanding of language ideologies and social inequalities in the country, as they connect more widely to dynamics in the Global South. The book seeks to untangle the voices embedded in the language practices of a range of communities and professions in the region, which have been little studied in the literature, and encourage a rethinking of the relationships between language and nationality, class, ethnicity, race, and gender. Highlighting perspectives from established and emerging researchers and drawing on a wide range of theoretical approaches and methodologies, the volume is organized around such key themes as bilingualism and diglossia; language variation across domains; language and identity in literature; and the interconnectedness of language, identity, and globalization. Taken together, the collection calls attention to the socially and spatially situated nature of language practices in Bangladesh and in turn, the ways in which scholars in the Global South make sense of the sociolinguistic landscape at both the local and global levels. This book will appeal to scholars working in sociolinguistics, particularly those working on language policy, language and identity, language variation, and in or about the Global South.
