Book Minimal Residual Disease in Melanoma

Download or read book Minimal Residual Disease in Melanoma written by U. Reinhold and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge about diagnostic procedures in melanoma has in creased rapidly within the past few years. Single tumor cells have been identified in normal tissue such as sentinel lymph nodes, as well as in bone marrow, peripheral blood, and other bodily fluids and cells, by molecular technologies. The introduction of polymerase chain reaction-based methods can be regarded as a prototype of this dramatic development towards molecular approaches in new diagnostic procedures. This fact opens up the possibility of clinical use in patients and of influencing treatment strategies. Considerable discrepancies have been described, how ever, in the success rates of these new techniques for the detec tion of minimal residual disease in cancer patients. Despite fav orable results reported by different groups of investigators, it will take several years to define the clinical and pathophysiological relevance of new diagnostic procedures. The 1st International Symposium "Minimal Residual Disease in Melanoma: Biology, Detection and Clinical Relevance of Microme tastases", held in September 1999 in Homburg/Saar, Germany, fo cused on recent developments in this particular area of cancer re search. The purpose of the meeting was to stimulate discussion and exchange of new data and ideas by renowned international scientists. The aim of this volume is to summarize major topics of basic research and clinical investigations presented by invited experts in this fascinating but still. controversial field of melanoma re search.

Book Adjuvant Therapies and Markers of Post Surgical Minimal Residual Disease I

Download or read book Adjuvant Therapies and Markers of Post Surgical Minimal Residual Disease I written by Gianni Bonadonna and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: P. Denoix and G. Mathe Approximately 70% of cancer patients relapse after surgery before the 5th year and, in most cases, for example in breast carcinoma, they relapse still later up to the 20th year. For some considerable time, the strategy of cancer treatment has been limited to the sophistication of surgery-radiotherapy combinations that maximally decreased the incidence of local and regional relapses in sites that were within their reach. Today, the practice of clinical oncology is unthinkable without the active participation of the medical oncologist. He is the "third man" of the clinical oncology team, and he has recently focused attention on the fact that most relapses arise from distant metastases due to the proliferation of cells seeded there after having left the primary tumor site at the time of operation and, hence, are inaccessible to any form oflocal and/or regional treatment. On this evidence, medical oncologists have proposed the application of medical treatments for disseminated minimal residual disease (MRD). They have two available means: chemother apy and immunotherapy. Medical oncologists in general can be divided into three groups: chemotherapists, immunotherapists, and chemoimmunotherapists. The pure chemotherapists, who had already cured some malignant neoplasias such as Hodgkin's disease, acute lymphoid leukemia, placental choriocarcinoma, and Wilms' tumor, thought they might have the means of attacking the residual disease of common cancers.

Book Targeted Interference with Signal Transduction Events

Download or read book Targeted Interference with Signal Transduction Events written by B. Groner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-08-09 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book does nothing less than lay out the state of development of tomorrow’s cancer drugs, directed against growth factors, growth factor receptors and intracellular signaling molecules with kinase activities. The sequencing of the human genome and insights into signaling pathways have contributed to the understanding of cancer etiology and the development of new, improved cancer drugs such as Herceptin and Glivec. The deregulation of pathways due to mutated cancer genes provides the conceptual basis for future progress. Will it be possible to derive more efficient cancer drugs?

Book Oxford Textbook of Oncology
