Book Beans Roots and Leaves

Download or read book Beans Roots and Leaves written by Paul Bernard Foley and published by Tectum Verlag DE. This book was released on 2003 with total page 934 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parkinsonism of various types has long been a debilitating and cruel affliction for significant numbers of people, and even today the cure remains elusive. The present volume explores the colorful and sometimes alarming history of the attempts to provide at least some relief from the symptoms of this disorder, commencing with interesting reports from ancient India and medieval Europe and continuing until the present time. Especial attention is devoted to L-DOPA therapy, still the leading pharmacological approach to the disorder more than forty years after its first application, and its place in the development of neurochemistry. But the employment of solanaceous plant alkaloid-based therapies, which dominated antiparkinsonian therapy until the mid-20th century, and the broad range of other approaches which found varying degrees of popularity, including those stimulated by the encephalitis epidemic which appeared in Europe during the First World War, are also discussed. The author concludes that antiparkinsonian therapy was never 'irrational', but was rather always determined by prevailing medical, pharmacological and scientific paradigms, so that its history is inextricably linked with experimental and clinical developments in these fields.

Book Huntington s Disease

Download or read book Huntington s Disease written by Oliver W J Quarrell and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-02-28 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Huntington's disease is a genetically inherited condition which results in severe nerve-cell damage in the brain. The hereditary and debilitative nature of the disease means that many people are involved either directly or indirectly by this condition. The recent identification of the faulty gene involved has made the diagnosis of this condition simpler. The majority of people develop the disease between the ages of 35 and 55 years, so for those aware of their genetic risk there are dilemmas to consider - should you have a test to see if you have the gene? Should you start a family? The new edition of this successful book specifically designed for families of patients with Huntington's disease has been expanded to include a number of important new developments in research and clinical practice that have occurred in the field in recent years. While there are no drugs currently available that slow down or reverse the neurodegenerative process in Huntington's Disease, there is growing data on the use of existing treatments to manage movement disorder, irritability and depression associated with the condition, which are covered here. This edition also includes completely new chapters covering juvenile Huntington's disease and late-stage Huntington's disease, and a fully updated Appendix of relevant patients' organizations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone who has any contact with mental patients, old or young, or their families, or just visits a mental hospital or school for the retarded, is aware of the tremendous suffering caused by malfunctioning of the brain. The func tion of no other organ is so crucial for our everyday life, our proper func tioning, indeed our happiness, and no other illness causes as much anguish to patients or their families as mental illness. It is surprising and sad, therefore, how little effort has been devoted to research in this area; more so because such research is the only hope to ameliorate this suffering, or, to speak in the language of politics or economics, to decrease the enormous sums that we spend on trying to help our patients, with what is must generally be agreed are the most primitive and inadequate methods of treatment. Clearly, since functions of the brain are vital not only in illness, but in health, pathology is not the only area of concern to neurochemists, but it is an area that urgently needs neurochemical contributions. Progress in this field has been slower than in other areas of neurochemistry, and it seems that solutions in this field are very elusive. The reason for this is that the experimental approach is especially difficult in conditions specific for humans, or specific for complex behavior.
