Book excerpt: The complex and fascinating story of Romania's 'turning of arms' against Nazi Germany, and the battle for Romania - an important but overlooked and misunderstood episode of World War II. The battle for Romania from March to September 1944 is a multifaceted story involving German, Romanian, Soviet, American, and British forces. Romania's defection from the Axis denied Nazi Germany not just resources (especially oil) but also turned the Romanian Army, formerly its most important support on the Eastern Front, from friend to foe. The fighting witnessed the German Sixth Army being destroyed for a second time (after Stalingrad). This in-depth work explores the strategic struggle within German-Romanian relations and the tactical development of the Battle of Romania. The detailed 2D maps and 3D diagrams guide you step-by-step through the Axis defence of Romania in March-May during the first Iasi-Chisinau offensive, the Allied campaign in April-August to assist the Soviets, the Axis collapse in August during the second Iasi-Chisinau offensive, the Romanian defeat of the attempted German counter-coup, and the final Soviet occupation of Romania. Period photographs from the Romanian archives and private collections, many never before seen, and stunning battlescene artworks bring to life the soldiers and materiel of the wide range of forces involved in this rarely explored Eastern Front campaign.

Book Romanian Fugue in C Sharp

Book excerpt: Into American writing, Romanian Fugue in C Sharp brings an entirely new sensibility, at once haunting and irreverent, lyric and satirical. The American bombing of the oil refineries at Ploiesti, Romania in 1944 plunges the timeless village of Frasinet into the modern world. As the boots of history tramp through Frasinet, bringing the brutal absurdities of Communism, the villagers and their city friends are forced to adapt and survive. Adalgiza and her fellow prostitutes become a socialist weavers' cooperative; George, a hospitable giant, tries to keep his spectator attitude; two families of wandering gypsies refuse to enter into time at all; Theodore, a mischievous intelligence, drowns himself in American jazz and pleasure; Norel, a sorcerer, becomes a secret agent; and Fanoutza, the stubborn, sensitive little girl at the book's center, grows into Stephanie, a poet and journalist, determined to become Theodore's lover and to fly out into the free world. Book The Legionary Movement After Corneliu Codreanu

Download or read book The Legionary Movement After Corneliu Codreanu written by Ilarion Țiu and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corneliu Codreanu was a far-right, Romanian politician who established the Legion of the Archangel Michael in 1927. Alternately known as the Legionary Movement, this organization supported an ultra-nationalist, anti-Semitic, anti-communist, and anti-parliamentary position that would later become targeted by the reigning communist party. This book begins with the establishment of King Carol II's dictatorship and ends with the Palace coup of 1944, the moment in which Romania entered a Soviet sphere of influence and the legionnaires were made to suffer for their previous alliance with Germany. Most scholarship places the failure of Romanian-German collaboration solely upon the activities of the legionnaires. Ilarion Tiu offers a different view, providing a more detailed account of the legionnaires' history, philosophy both before and after Codreanu's 1938 death.
