Book 11th International Conference on Practical Applications of Computational Biology Bioinformatics

Download or read book 11th International Conference on Practical Applications of Computational Biology Bioinformatics written by Florentino Fdez-Riverola and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-19 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological and biomedical research are increasingly driven by experimental techniques that challenge our ability to analyse, process and extract meaningful knowledge from the underlying data. The impressive capabilities of next-generation sequencing technologies, together with novel and constantly evolving, distinct types of omics data technologies, have created an increasingly complex set of challenges for the growing fields of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. The analysis of the datasets produced and their integration call for new algorithms and approaches from fields such as Databases, Statistics, Data Mining, Machine Learning, Optimization, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. Clearly, Biology is more and more a science of information and requires tools from the computational sciences. In the last few years, we have seen the rise of a new generation of interdisciplinary scientists with a strong background in the biological and computational sciences. In this context, the interaction of researchers from different scientific fields is, more than ever, of foremost importance in boosting the research efforts in the field and contributing to the education of a new generation of Bioinformatics scientists. The PACBB’17 conference was intended to contribute to this effort and promote this fruitful interaction, with a technical program that included 39 papers spanning many different sub-fields in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. Further, the conference promoted the interaction of scientists from diverse research groups and with a distinct background (computer scientists, mathematicians, biologists).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proliferation of massive data sets brings with it a series of special computational challenges. This "data avalanche" arises in a wide range of scientific and commercial applications. With advances in computer and information technologies, many of these challenges are beginning to be addressed by diverse inter-disciplinary groups, that indude computer scientists, mathematicians, statisticians and engineers, working in dose cooperation with application domain experts. High profile applications indude astrophysics, bio-technology, demographics, finance, geographi cal information systems, government, medicine, telecommunications, the environment and the internet. John R. Tucker of the Board on Mathe matical Seiences has stated: "My interest in this problern (Massive Data Sets) isthat I see it as the rnost irnportant cross-cutting problern for the rnathernatical sciences in practical problern solving for the next decade, because it is so pervasive. " The Handbook of Massive Data Sets is comprised of articles writ ten by experts on selected topics that deal with some major aspect of massive data sets. It contains chapters on information retrieval both in the internet and in the traditional sense, web crawlers, massive graphs, string processing, data compression, dustering methods, wavelets, op timization, external memory algorithms and data structures, the US national duster project, high performance computing, data warehouses, data cubes, semi-structured data, data squashing, data quality, billing in the large, fraud detection, and data processing in astrophysics, air pollution, biomolecular data, earth observation and the environment.

Book Bioinformatics of Genome Regulation and Structure II

Download or read book Bioinformatics of Genome Regulation and Structure II written by Nikolay Kolchanov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-06-15 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last 15 years in development of biology were marked with accumulation of unprecedentedly huge arrays of experimental data. The information was amassed with exclusively high rates due to the advent of highly efficient experimental technologies that provided for high throughput genomic sequencing; of functional genomics technologies allowing investigation of expression dynamics of large groups of genes using expression DNA chips; of proteomics methods giving the possibility to analyze protein compositions of cells, tissues, and organs, assess the dynamics of the cell proteome, and reconstruct the networks of protein-protein interactions; and of metabolomics, in particular, high resolution mass spectrometry study of cell metabolites, and distribution of metabolic fluxes in the cells with a concurrent investigation of the dynamics of thousands metabolites in an individual cell. Analysis, comprehension, and use of the tremendous volumes of experimental data reflecting the intricate processes underlying the functioning of molecular genetic systems are unfeasible in principle without the systems approach and involvement of the state-of-the-art information and computer technologies and efficient mathematical methods for data analysis and simulation of biological systems and processes. The need in solving these problems initiated the birth of a new science— postgenomic bioinformatics or systems biology in silico.

Book Fast Reliable Algorithms for Matrices with Structure

Download or read book Fast Reliable Algorithms for Matrices with Structure written by T. Kailath and published by SIAM. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to pay special attention to the combined issues of speed and numerical reliability in algorithm development. These two requirements have often been regarded as competitive, so much so that the design of fast and numerically reliable algorithms for large-scale structured systems of linear equations, in many cases, remains a significant open issue. Fast Reliable Algorithms for Matrices with Structure helps bridge this gap by providing the reader with recent contributions written by leading experts in the field. The authors deal with both the theory and the practice of fast numerical algorithms for large-scale structured linear systems. Each chapter covers in detail different aspects of the most recent trends in the theory of fast algorithms, with emphasis on implementation and application issues. Both direct and iterative methods are covered. This book is not merely a collection of articles. The editors have gone to considerable lengths to blend the individual papers into a consistent presentation. Each chapter exposes the reader to some of the most recent research while providing enough background material to put the work into proper context.

Book Handbook of Graphs and Networks

Download or read book Handbook of Graphs and Networks written by Stefan Bornholdt and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2006-03-06 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complex interacting networks are observed in systems from such diverse areas as physics, biology, economics, ecology, and computer science. For example, economic or social interactions often organize themselves in complex network structures. Similar phenomena are observed in traffic flow and in communication networks as the internet. In current problems of the Biosciences, prominent examples are protein networks in the living cell, as well as molecular networks in the genome. On larger scales one finds networks of cells as in neural networks, up to the scale of organisms in ecological food webs. This book defines the field of complex interacting networks in its infancy and presents the dynamics of networks and their structure as a key concept across disciplines. The contributions present common underlying principles of network dynamics and their theoretical description and are of interest to specialists as well as to the non-specialized reader looking for an introduction to this new exciting field. Theoretical concepts include modeling networks as dynamical systems with numerical methods and new graph theoretical methods, but also focus on networks that change their topology as in morphogenesis and self-organization. The authors offer concepts to model network structures and dynamics, focussing on approaches applicable across disciplines.
