Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structure: the foundation for health and function What sets apart the average dog enthusiast from the expert? Often it’s an in-depth knowledge of the anatomy of the dog and a solid understanding of terminology used in the world of dogs. Do you know what a judge is talking about when he mentions “stifle let-down,” “shallow brisket,” or “excessive angulation?” K-9 Structure and Terminology defines and illustrates these and hundreds of other terms in easy to understand language so you can train your mind and eye to evaluate dogs. All dogs need sound structure for health, show, work, or sport, and, by learning to see beneath the skin the reader will be more able to work with, understand, and appreciate canis familiaris. Gain a better understanding of: • Breed Standards including breed variations. • How the original purpose of the breed is expressed in the structure of the dog. • Terminology used in veterinary care and dog sports, especially Conformation. • How to identify what is right and sound in any dog you encounter. Bonus! A 31-page glossary of words including common and less common terms. What experts are saying about K-9 Structure and Terminology: "If you wish to significantly improve your knowledge of canine conformation, K-9 Structure and Terminology provides a…comprehensive description of the details…of canine variation. And it does so with a clear focus on the importance of establishing a common terminology that can be understood and applied." James W. Edwards, Ph.D., Professor of Biology, Emeritus, Salem College; AKC, Director, Judging Research and Development "All of us in the dog world should strive for perfection…We need to train our eyes and our hands to recognize the strengths in a dog’s structure and movement. This book is an excellent guide in our unending quest of applicable knowledge." Pat Hastings, author of Tricks of the Trade. From Best Intentions to Best in Show, AKC Judge and noted lecturer Edward M. Gilbert is a multiple breed and group AKC judge, lecturer, and writer. His engineering and technical writing background makes him especially well-suited to the task of explaining canine structure and terminology. He lives in California with his wife Pat and their retired Champion Afghans and Salukis. Thelma Brown, AKC Emeritus judge, worked side by side with her husband Curtis Brown breeding and showing dogs beginning in 1937. She is retired and living in California.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In most college and university libraries, materials published before 1800 have been moved into special collections, while the post-1923 books remain in general circulation. But books published between these dates are vulnerable to deaccessioning, as libraries increasingly reconfigure access to public-domain texts via digital repositories such as Google Books. Even libraries with strong commitments to their print collections are clearing out the duplicates, assuming that circulating copies of any given nineteenth-century edition are essentially identical to one another. When you look closely, however, you see that they are not. Many nineteenth-century books were donated by alumni or their families decades ago, and many of them bear traces left behind by the people who first owned and used them. In Book Traces, Andrew M. Stauffer adopts what he calls "guided serendipity" as a tactic in pursuit of two goals: first, to read nineteenth-century poetry through the clues and objects earlier readers left in their books and, second, to defend the value of keeping the physical volumes on the shelves. Finding in such books of poetry the inscriptions, annotations, and insertions made by their original owners, and using them as exemplary case studies, Stauffer shows how the physical, historical book enables a modern reader to encounter poetry through the eyes of someone for whom it was personal.

Catherine Hathaway has no intention of letting another child into her life. Retired schoolteacher Miss Hathaway longs to be left alone inside her beautiful backyard garden. Just because the new family next door includes a precocious but lonely five-year-old named Tazzy, doesn't mean the seventy-year-old womanmust open her haven or her heart to the neglected girl. Catherine is having enough trouble, losing her balance and her vision, without the disruptions of the unsettling memories that the child provokes. Catherine's eight-foot fence keeps her precious dog Percy safe in the yard, but can't keep Tazzy out. The spirited child finds a way through the unlocked gate, drawn by sweet Percy and the enchantments of the backyard garden. When she appears with suspicious red marks on her arm and other signs of abuse, Catherine spies on the family, convinced that the single mother is abusive like her own mother was. The mysterious willow tree hovers throughout Catherine's story. A refuge from her past, it is now the crown jewel of her garden. Waving from the creek's edge behind Catherine's home, the enchanting tree has a life and story of its own. Memories of the sister she lost and the mother who left her sweep Catherine toward her destiny with the willow, the river, and the child she must find to save her life. Can this disenchanted old woman rise from the flood of grief and loss? Will she find the spirit of God moving among the ferns and birds of her haven? What part will the willow play in transforming Catherine from the woman she is into the one she wants to become? Journey with Catherine in her search for growth and flowering in old age.

Book excerpt: "AN AUTISTIC BOY WHO BEAT THE ODDS." Looking For Normal is the memoir of author, musician and filmmaker, Steve Slavin. His obsession with music, at an early age, led to a long career in the creative arts, albeit one plagued by clinical depression and the symptoms of a condition he was unaware of until 2008. In recounting the 48 years that led to his autism diagnosis, this darkly humorous memoir will inform and inspire anyone with an interest in mental health and autism. But more than this, it is the story of an "emotionally disturbed child, without a future" who, against the backdrop of low expectation, became an ambitious, independent adult, with a wife, daughters, and a career stifled by the long shadow of his childhood dysfunction. "A wonderful insight into an extraordinary life." - Peter Holmes Ph.D. "Insightful, inspiring, informative and entertaining. Looking For Normal is not just about overcoming the adversities that life throws at you on a regular basis. It is also about someone's journey of accepting, embracing and celebrating everything that comes with having autism." - Dr RF (Senior practitioner Educational Psychologist).

Download or read book Remember Me written by Eileen Anderson and published by Dogwise Publishing. This book was released on 2016-07-12 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remember Me? is an award-winning guidebook for owners of dogs who are losing their mental faculties as they age, and the story of a dog and owner who retained their bond through this most difficult situation. If you have an aging dog, Remember Me? will give you the information you need to weather the difficult condition and give your dog the most fulfilling life possible. In Remember Me, you will learn: • About the symptoms of canine cognitive dysfunction, medications and other interventions that are showing promise in treating the condition; • How to adapt your home and habits to keep your dog safe; • The many products available to solve the problems of senior dogs; • How to make things easier on yourself, physically and emotionally; and • The complex question of euthanasia and how to make your own decision about it. The story of author Eileen Anderson's small terrier Cricket, who developed dementia, is threaded through the book. As Cricket's dementia worsened she paced, she circled, she stood in corners, she forgot what she was doing, and at times she lost and found her owner repeatedly. For the last weeks of her life she even forgot how to drink water. As Cricket's condition deteriorated and needs changed, Anderson learned about the disease and developed methods to care for her dog. She shares these methods in Remember Me? and her calm, conversational tone is soothing to dog owners who are suffering--sometimes more than their dogs. Remember Me? won the 2016 Maxwell Award from the Dog Writers Association of America for a book on health, behavior, or general care.
