Book Africa s World Cup

Download or read book Africa s World Cup written by Peter Alegi and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2013-05-16 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africa’s World Cup: Critical Reflections on Play, Patriotism, Spectatorship, and Space focuses on a remarkable month in the modern history of Africa and in the global history of football. Peter Alegi and Chris Bolsmann are well-known experts on South African football, and they have assembled an impressive team of local and international journalists, academics, and football experts to reflect on the 2010 World Cup and its broader significance, its meanings, complexities, and contradictions. The World Cup’s sounds, sights, and aesthetics are explored, along with questions of patriotism, nationalism, and spectatorship in Africa and around the world. Experts on urban design and communities write on how the presence of the World Cup worked to refashion urban spaces and negotiate the local struggles in the hosting cities. The volume is richly illustrated by authors’ photographs, and the essays in this volume feature chronicles of match day experiences; travelogues; ethnographies of fan cultures; analyses of print, broadcast, and electronic media coverage of the tournament; reflections on the World Cup’s private and public spaces; football exhibits in South African museums; and critiques of the World Cup’s processes of inclusion and exclusion, as well as its political and economic legacies. The volume concludes with a forum on the World Cup, including Thabo Dladla, Director of Soccer at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Mohlomi Kekeletso Maubane, a well-known Soweto-based writer and a soccer researcher, and Rodney Reiners, former professional footballer and current chief soccer writer for the Cape Argus newspaper in Cape Town. This collection will appeal to students, scholars, journalists, and fans. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book provides a critically informed analysis of the impact and legacy of mega-sporting events through the lens of South Africa's 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup and its associated developmental paradigm. It challenges mainstream thinking and mega-event praise singers by providing concrete evidence to show that this sporting spectacular was little more than a front for massive accumulation and extraction of wealth, alongside increased sporting and socio-economic inequality. Contributors to this volume examine the sports accumulation-complex, economic promises, construction companies, trade unions, strikes, international solidarity, the struggle to trade, sex work, climate change, as well as case studies on the building of individual soccer stadiums. Eddie Cottle is the regional policy and campaign officer of the Building and Wood Workers' international (BWI) for Africa and the Middle East. This is a timely reminder that the 2010 World Cup nation-building illusion in fact disguised a reality of greed, elite enrichment and nepotism - and left us with a terrible financial hangover.' Terry Bell, columnist at Independent Newspapers, Business Report, and independent economic/labour analyst Book jacket.

Book excerpt: Firmly situating South African teams, players, and associations in the international framework in which they have to compete, South Africa and the Global Game: Football, Apartheid, and Beyond presents an interdisciplinary analysis of how and why South Africa underwent a remarkable transformation from a pariah in world sport to the first African host of a World Cup in 2010. Book Development and Dreams

Download or read book Development and Dreams written by Udesh Pillay and published by HSRC Publishers. This book was released on 2009 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Development and Dreams: The Urban Legacy of the 2010 Football World Cup considers the effects of South Africa's hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup. It is held that here lies the greatest potential benefit of the 2010 World Cup - a repudiation of Afro pessimism and an assertion of a contemporary African identity both at home and on a global stage. The contributors to this volume, both academics and practitioners, provide an interdisciplinary perspective on the probable consequences of the World Cup for the economy of South Africa and its cities, on infrastructure development, and on the projection of African culture and identity. Attention is given to a range of topics including the management, costs and benefits associated with the 2010 World Cup, the uncertain economic and employment benefits, venue selection, and investment in infrastructure, tourism and fan parks. The contributors then explore the less tangible hopes, dreams and aspirations associated with the 2010 World Cup and interrogate what it means to talk about an African Cup, African culture and identity. Academics, policy-makers and the reading public will find this book an invaluable companion as South Africa prepares to host the world's largest sporting event."--Website.

Download or read book The Big Fix written by Ray Hartley and published by Jonathan Ball Publishers. This book was released on 2016-05-10 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between June and July 2010, 64 games of football determined that Spain was the world's best team at the World Cup in South Africa. South Africans – and the world – celebrated a brilliantly hosted tournament where everything worked like clockwork and the stands were packed with vuvuzela-wielding fans. But the truth was not yet known. Behind this significant national achievement lay years of corporate skulduggery, crooked companies rigging tenders and match fixing involving the national team. As late as 2015 it was revealed that the tournament's very foundations were corrupt when evidence emerged that South Africa had encouraged FIFA to pay money to a bent official in the Caribbean to buy three votes in its favour. As Sepp Blatter's FIFA edifice crumbled, a web of transactions from New York to Trinidad and Tobago showed how money was diverted to allow South Africa's bid to host the tournament to succeed. In The Big Fix: How South Africa Stole the 2010 World Cup, Ray Hartley reveals the story of an epic national achievement and the people who undermined it in pursuit of their own interests. It is the real story of the 2010 World Cup.

Book With Batons and Vuvuzelas To What Extent Can South Africa s Safety and Security Policy for the 2010 FIFA World Cup Make a Sustainable Contribution to International Tourism to the Country

Download or read book With Batons and Vuvuzelas To What Extent Can South Africa s Safety and Security Policy for the 2010 FIFA World Cup Make a Sustainable Contribution to International Tourism to the Country written by Andreas Mittag and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2017-06-28 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Miscellaneous, grade: 2, University of Potsdam, language: English, abstract: This thesis examines the extent to which the safety and security policy implemented for the 2010 FIFA World Cup can make a sustainable contribution to international tourism to South Africa. Qualitative interviews were conducted with local experts from the fields of sport and recreation, safety and security, tourism and economic development in order to establish the effectiveness, sustainability and long-term impact of the 2010 safety and security plan on one of the country’s most significant and fastest growing economic sectors. The results of the empirical research reveal, amongst other things, that urban renewal and gentrification have rendered certain areas in South African cities more attractive and secure and that a comprehensive tourism safety network has been developed to cater for the needs of tourists. Finally, it can be concluded that the 2010 safety and security policy’s sustainability cannot be guaranteed although its successful implementation will have improved global perceptions of South Africa as a tourist destination and have played a pivotal role in attracting future overseas visitors.

Book Africa s Place in the International Football System

Download or read book Africa s Place in the International Football System written by Mark-Marcel Müller and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2008-09 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Africa, grade: 70, Stellenbosch Universitiy, 180 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: For millions of people around the globe, football is an important part of everyday life. Similarly, many African governments have found in international football competitions one of the few opportunities to be internationally represented. Furthermore, through successful participation of their respective national football sides, they internally seek to foster nationhood. In fact, football is an integral part of African self-esteem with regards to being recognised by the rest of the world. However, to succeed in international sports means to succeed in a politico-economic structure far from equality and general solidarity. This thesis goes about the question why South Africa received the FIFA 2010 World Cup. Thereby it will distinguish the position of the African continent within the international football system. A historical analysis will clarify the processes and actors as well as the driving motivations which led to the FIFA World Cup host decision in favour of the African continent. The outcome of this study suggests that social interaction is driven by the interplay of two variables: normative principles and economic practices. The historical development of modern social behaviour from the 16th century until today's global capitalism surely reflects the interplay of these two traits. At the hand of the historical development of the international football system this thesis is going to outline this interplay - as a European form of behaviour that came to encapsulate all social relations on the globe particularly by the spread of the cultural practice of football. This study reaches the overall conclusion that the decision to let an African nation host the FIFA World Cup meant that economic practice and normative principles were brought into perceived congruence.
