Book Residential Segregation in Comparative Perspective

Download or read book Residential Segregation in Comparative Perspective written by Kuniko Fujita and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We know very little about variations in urban class and ethnic segregation among nations and even less about differences among cities in different regions of the world. Spatial organization (places and neighbourhoods) matters significantly in some cities in reproducing class relations and ethno-racial hierarchies, but may be much less important in others. The degree and the impact of segregation depend upon contextual diversity. By emphasizing the importance of contextual diversity in the study of urban residential segregation, the book questions currently popular urban theories such as global city, neoliberal urbanism, and gentrification. These theories tend to dissociate cities from their national and regional context and thus ignore their history, culture, politics and institutions. The aim of this book is to introduce the significantly different urban experiences in social and spatial segregation patterns and rationales which exist among the world's regions and to demonstrate that urban theory needs to draw systematically upon this wide range of experiences. The cities selected (Athens, Beijing, Budapest, Copenhagen, Hong Kong, Madrid, Paris, São Paulo, Taipei, and Tokyo) were chosen in order to achieve geographical spread, to maximise the diversity of types of socioeconomic regulation. This volume is thus able to avoid the interpretative limitations and misconstructions resulting from universalizing the Anglo-American experience.

Book Economic Prosperity and Space Development

Download or read book Economic Prosperity and Space Development written by Michael G. Baran and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-07-09 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been over two years in the making. While the title may appear to be specific to Economics and Space Development I have been sure to include the human element as well as consider environmental concerns. I feel out of necessity it is essential something be done to prevent our world economy from running the risk of falling into a depression. Whereby the middle class and the poor would see their positions decline, which is already happening to some extent. Politicians, business leaders, and economists appear to be in a tough position, with little room to manoeuvre, with respect to revitalising the world economy. As well, there may not have been much focus yet on developing new strategies to bring about economic recovery. Since the focus to date appears to be on regaining economic stability. I feel what I have to offer, which may not be the ultimate or only solution, may at the very least stimulate some thoughtful discussions on how to improve the economic stability and perhaps return to some economic growth. "Economic Prosperity and Space Development" is essentially about how we can improve our current world economic malaise by looking at Space Exploration and Development as a way to exploit our Solar Systems and the Galaxy's wealth. I have related the advent of man's expansion into the Galaxy in relation to the historical exploitation of the America's by European Nations and the resulting accumulation of wealth and generation of economic prosperity. I begin by documenting the poor economic situation the world is in. I have obtained and reported economic data from the IMF, the World Bank, Government Agencies, and recent News Reports. The main direction these reports take is that the National and City governments and their respective budgets appear to have debt risk especially in the current economic environment. As well many Industries are finding their markets lacking growth or their markets are at risk. I have also included a section on the environment which is bound to be detrimentally affected should the economy continue to falter. This at a time when we appear to be making some progress in waste processes at the city and industrial level. As to financing this proposed expansion into Space I detail in the book how the G20 community and the World Bank should set up long term financing along the lines of the various programs the World Bank is currently involved with. But , I imagine on a much larger scale. Due to scope of the financial outlay I also recommend the Space Development is organised along the lines of Economic Communities (EU , NA, AP , etc) rather just the individual Nation states. I provide examples of recent World Bank financed programs that have been implemented. Then finally I detail how our existence on earth is subject to catastrophic events. Asteroids, Climate change, changes in magnetic polar locations. While we hope that our existence on earth should be free from trouble for the next few thousand years at least. We just do not know when to expect the next occurrence. Having technologies developed that would allow the transport of a good portion of the populace and nature would help alleviate that risk.

Book excerpt: The United States is among the most affluent nations in the world and has its largest economy; nevertheless, it has more poverty than most countries with similar standards of living. Growing income inequality and the Great Recession have made the problem worse. In this thoroughly revised edition of Poverty in America, Iceland takes a new look at this issue by examining why poverty remains pervasive, what it means to be poor in America today, which groups are most likely to be poor, the root causes of poverty, and the effects of policy on poverty. This new edition also includes completely updated data and extended discussions of poverty in the context of the Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street movements as well as new chapters on the Great Recession and global poverty. In doing so this book provides the most recent information available on patterns and trends in poverty and engages in an open and accessible manner in current critical debates.

Book 50 Years of Community Development Vol II

Download or read book 50 Years of Community Development Vol II written by Norman Walzer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-13 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 50th anniversary publication provides a comprehensive history of community development. Beginning in 1970 with the advent of the Community Development Society and its journal shortly thereafter, Community Development, the editors have placed the chapters in major themed areas or issues pertinent to both research and practice of community development. The evolution of community development as an area of scholarship and application, and the subsequent founding of the discipline, is vital to capture. At the 50-year mark, it is particularly relevant to revisit issues that reoccur throughout the last five decades and look at approaches to addressing them. These include issues and themes around equity and inclusion, collective impact, leadership and policy development, as well as resilience and sustainability. Community change over time has much to teach us, and this set will provide a foundation for fostering understanding of the history of community development and its focus on community change. The chapters in this book were originally published in the journal Community Development.

Book Urban Environment Travel Behavior Health and Resident Satisfaction

Download or read book Urban Environment Travel Behavior Health and Resident Satisfaction written by Anzhelika Antipova and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-09 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the intersections of urban development, travel patterns, and health. Currently, there is a lack of research concerning the subjective dimensions of accessibility in urban environments and travel behavior, as well as travel-related outcomes. Antipova fills this gap in the scholarship by developing an analysis of satisfaction and perception-related indicators at an intraurban level. Specifically, she investigates various aspects of urban environment from the perspective of resident perception and satisfaction, as well as the relationship between urban environment, travel behavior, activity patterns, and traveler health.

Book Poverty Alleviation and Environmental Law

Download or read book Poverty Alleviation and Environmental Law written by Yves Le Bouthillier and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The alleviation of poverty and the protection of the environment are both critical challenges for the vindication of basic human rights for all of humankind. This relationship is however not necessarily an easy one. While there is an inextricable link between poverty and the degradation of the environment, a sophisticated analysis of a problem needs to deal with those cases where the need to increase economic opportunity for poor communities may appear to conflict with fragile ecosystems or the preservation of traditional practices. This collection provides the most sustained engagement with these problems. Drawing on the expertise of a range of distinguished authors, this book presents the reader with an integrated global engagement with these problems. In doing so, it represents a landmark effort towards the creation of a coherent literature to deal with one of humankind's most pressing challenges.' – Dennis Davis, Judge of the High Court, South Africa 'The complex, uneven and challenging relationships between poverty alleviation and environmental regulation are impossible to trace in a single book but this collection brings a carefully selected set of policy-relevant, context-responsive, practical legal analyses to bear in a fresh examination of the present and future challenges involved. This is a timely contribution in the search for regulatory responses that alleviate rather than exacerbate the myriad forms of adaptation apartheid now so painfully evident in the relationship between poverty, injustice and environmental degradation.' – Anna Grear, University of Waikato, New Zealand 'The subject of poverty cannot be ignored by environmentalists as the poor are the most affected by the diverse impacts of environmental degradation and climate change such as on water, natural resources and cultural heritage sites. In addition, slum dwellings exacerbate the plight of the poor. The book is a collection of diverse topics by renowned environmental legal experts which deal with the relationship between the alleviation of poverty and the protection of the environment. Each writer addresses the challenges raised in various issues and recommends solutions which range from linking with human rights, the need for public participation, the role of environmental courts and other mechanisms.' – Koh Kheng-Lian, National University of Singapore This timely book explores the complex relationship between the alleviation of poverty and the protection of the environment. There is every reason to believe that these issues are in many ways interdependent. However this book demonstrates that there are situations where alleviation of poverty and the protection of the environment appear to be in a fraught relationship. The contributing authors illustrate that the role played by law in this relationship, whether at the international or national level, will vary depending on the situation and will be more successful at pursuing environmental justice in some cases than in others. This interdisciplinary study will appeal to academics and students in environmental law and other environmental disciplines, environmental policymakers and NGOs interested in issues of poverty, environment and indigenous peoples.

Book Rural Aging in 21st Century America

Download or read book Rural Aging in 21st Century America written by Nina Glasgow and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-14 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates sociological, demographic and geographic aspects of aging in rural and nonmetropolitan areas of the United States. Population aging is one of the most important trends of the 20th and 21st centuries, and it is occurring worldwide, especially in more developed countries such as the United States. Population aging is more rapid in rural than urban areas of the U.S. In 2010, 15 percent of the nonmetropolitan compared to 12 percent of the metropolitan population were 65 years of age and older. By definition rural communities have smaller sized populations, and more limited healthcare, transportation and other aging-relevant services than do urban areas. It is thus especially important to study and understand aging in rural environments. Rural Aging in 21st Century America contributes evidence-based, policy-relevant information on rural aging in the U.S. A primary objective of the book is to improve understanding of what makes the experience of rural aging different from aging in urban areas and to increase understanding of the aged change the nature of rural places. The book addresses unique features of rural aging across economic, racial/ethnic, migration and other structures and patterns, all with a focus on debunking myths about rural aging and to emphasize opportunities and challenges that rural places and older people experience.
