Book Who Will Water the Flowers

  • Publisher : Dog Ear Publishing

  • ISBN : 1457545055
  • Pages : 222 pages

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: aThe author invites you to embark on a journey to provoke your thinking about friendship, opportunity, and race relations in America. This may take you in a direction you had not previously considered as you navigate the course of your own life. Resetting your own sails may reap rewards. The author’s inspiration to write came from a startling spiritual experience, which he describes in “The Awakening.” This led to introspection and an urgent sense that a story must be told. More than twenty years passed before he understood the specifics of why, what, and when he was to write. He tells of his 2002 epiphany and a story spanning three-quarters of a century. Mr. Horner tells a story of overcoming adversity and making a full life beyond what his racial and family background might predict. He tells a story of working-class boys from divergent roots building lifelong bonds beginning in military college. Everyone has a story. In telling his, Mr. Horner answers the question, Who will water the flowers? Testimonial As a PMC cadet of the class of 1963, I found the book a compelling read. Many of the stories by the class of ‘62 relate and resonate with my experiences and without speculation probably to PMC cadets at large. The complex thoughts of ‘ boys to men’, strangers who through leadership subsumed their individual needs for the greater good of a brotherhood of men. This is a complex formula for those who have not been in the cauldron, the formative chemistry of all of us, good and bad. To me the most compelling aspect of the book was the author’s journey though life and the role of PMC friendship, mentorship, and leadership played in his life’s journey. The lessons learned of this journey may help us set the course to make our great nation better. General John H. Tillie, USA, Retired

Download or read book Remembrances in Black written by Charles F. Robinson II and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 2015-02-20 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the admittance in 1948 of Silas Hunt to the University of Arkansas Law School, the university became the first southern public institution of higher education to officially desegregate without being required to do so by court order. The process was difficult, but an important first step had been taken. Other students would follow in Silas Hunt's footsteps, and they along with the university would have to grapple with the situation. Remembrances in Black is an oral history that gathers the personal stories of African Americans who worked as faculty and staff and of students who studied at the state's flagship institution. These stories illustrate the anguish, struggle, and triumph of individuals who had their lives indelibly marked by their experiences at the school. Organized chronologically over sixty years, this book illustrates how people of color navigated both the evolving campus environment and that of the city of Fayetteville in their attempt to fulfill personal aspirations. Their stories demonstrate that the process of desegregation proved painfully slow to those who chose to challenge the forces of exclusion. Also, the remembrances question the extent to which desegregation has been fully realized.

Book Educating the Scholar Practitioner in Organization Development

Download or read book Educating the Scholar Practitioner in Organization Development written by Deborah A. Colwill and published by IAP. This book was released on 2012-12-01 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organization Development (OD) is a young social science. Little has been written on the intentional development of OD professionals. As a young field of inquiry it is important to understand how the future leaders of the field of OD are being developed. The focus of this work explores the education of scholar practitioners in OD. The research upon which this document is based examined the impact that professional research doctoral programs (affiliated with the field of OD) had on the learning and professional development of select doctoral graduates. Alumni reported important elements of their educational experience that contributed to their professional and personal growth. The nature of these educational elements suggest processes or methods of teaching that may be transferable to training OD professionals in a broader context outside of higher education. Even more directly this research provides well informed feedback to administrators and faculty of professional research doctorate programs from the alumni about their educational experience. This feedback could be used to advance both program and course development in universities that offer these types of degrees. The intended audience of this work includes practitioners of OD, professors of OD and management, faculty and administrators of doctoral education, talent management and leadership development professionals, and adult educators.

Book excerpt: Today’s global organizations operate at an extraordinary level of complexity. Going Global offers human resource professionals and I/O psychologists a comprehensive resource for meeting the challenges of the global work environment. Edited by Kyle Lundby, along with Jeff Jolton and a team of leading-edge practitioners, this comprehensive volume uses the employee lifecycle as an underlying framework and is organized into three sections: Practical considerations for HR and OD practitioners in a global environment; Attracting and selecting global talent; and Maximizing performance in the global workplace. Book Children at Risk

    Book Details:
  • Author : Janice Shaw Crouse
  • Publisher : Transaction Publishers
  • Release : 2011-12-31
  • ISBN : 1412815193
  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book Children at Risk written by Janice Shaw Crouse and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 2011-12-31 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The desire for our children to be free from want and danger and to be able to enjoy their youth in innocence would seem to be universal. Conventional wisdom says that parents in every socio-economic level of society share the dream of preserving their children's innocence. All want to provide a childhood and adolescence that shelters and protects children from the harshness of life and nurtures them until they are able to withstand the onslaught of reality. One need only look at troubled areas of the world, such as Northern Ireland, parts of the Middle East, or any number of other points on the globe, to see how weak is any communion forged out of these universal desires for the welfare of children. Even in the United States, the competition of ideas and values about what represents the "good" society in which to raise our children is fierce-as are differing views about the value of innocence and even life itself. These differing ideas and values affect people's actions even when they have never reflected on them, or have never cared enough to formulate those values into a coherent worldview. Crouse contends that without morals, children are at risk. Moral boundaries, not moral relativism, provide a safe haven for children by preserving their innocence and protecting them from predators and pedophiles. When authentic religious faith has been quashed, children are no longer safe. When the underlying values are wrong, when there are no common values unifying a people, even the best programs and most honorable of intentions are doomed to failure. Well-intentioned programs and policies inevitably fail miserably without an undergirding moral foundation, as is documented by an abundance of data and the social trends in America today.

Book Journalism Education Training and Employment

Download or read book Journalism Education Training and Employment written by Bob Franklin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-12-14 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During this period of rapid and significant change in journalistic practices, journalism educators are re-examining their own profession and contributing to the invention of new models and practices. This edited volume of studies by respected international scholars describes the diverse issues journalism educators are grappling with and the changes they are making in purpose and practice. The book is organized into three sections -- education, training and employment – that explore common themes: How the assumptions embedded in journalism education are being examined and revised in the light of transformative changes in communication; How the definitions of journalism and journalists are broadening in scope and what this means for educators; How newsrooms and training programs around the world are being re-examined and made more effective. An introductory essay and section summaries provide context for the thirteen chapters that constitute the collection. The section on journalism education explores fundamental ways educators are seeking to make their institutions and practices stronger and more responsive. The section on training includes case studies of journalism training programs in sub-Saharan Africa, Turkey, Sweden and the U.S. The final section examines the job prospects and employment market for journalism students with data from the U.S., U.K, Australia, and Sweden. The scope of issues considered in the book makes it a valuable resource for journalism scholars from around the world, as well as doctoral students, journalism and communication administrators in universities, organizations that fund journalism training programs, and practitioners interested in understanding employment and education trends.
