Book Public Investments in Energy Technology

Download or read book Public Investments in Energy Technology written by Michael P. Gallaher and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Escalating energy demand may be the most important issue facing the United States and the world today. There is little disagreement that research and development (R&D) is needed to develop new energy technologies for the future; however, there is less agreement over the specific research agenda to be pursued and how that agenda is funded. This book addresses the social importance of new energy technologies, illustrates policy-relevant applications of evaluation techniques and proposes new perspectives for a US energy investment strategy. Through detailed examples related to solar, geothermal, and vehicle technologies, the authors outline the need for robust evaluation methods to document social returns to taxpayers' R&D investments. They argue that such evaluations are necessary for the public sector to make rational decisions about the allocation of its scares resources. The evaluation methods considered involve developing alternative technology and market pathways from which the benefits of government research can be measured. Researchers and graduate students, policy makers involved in energy technology, and energy R&D program managers will all find much of value in this important and timely book.

Book A Heritage of Ruins

    Book Details:
  • Author : William R. Chapman
  • Publisher : University of Hawaii Press
  • Release : 2013-07-31
  • ISBN : 0824837932
  • Pages : 378 pages

Download or read book A Heritage of Ruins written by William R. Chapman and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2013-07-31 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ancient ruins of Southeast Asia have long sparked curiosity and romance in the world’s imagination. They appear in accounts of nineteenth-century French explorers, as props for Indiana Jones’ adventures, and more recently as the scene of Lady Lara Croft’s fantastical battle with the forces of evil. They have been featured in National Geographic magazine and serve as backdrops for popular television travel and reality shows. Now William Chapman’s expansive new study explores the varied roles these monumental remains have played in the histories of Southeast Asia’s modern nations. Based on more than fifteen years of travel, research, and visits to hundreds of ancient sites, A Heritage of Ruins shows the close connection between “ruins conservation” and both colonialism and nation building. It also demonstrates the profound impact of European-derived ideas of historic and aesthetic significance on ancient ruins and how these continue to color the management and presentation of sites in Southeast Asia today. Angkor, Pagan (Bagan), Borobudur, and Ayutthaya lie at the center of this cultural and architectural tour, but less visited sites, including Laos’s stunning Vat Phu, the small temple platforms of Malaysia’s Lembah Bujang Valley, the candi of the Dieng Plateau in Java, and the ruins of Mingun in Burma and Wiang Kum Kam near Chiang Mai in northern Thailand, are also discussed. All share a relative isolation from modern urban centers of population, sitting in park-like settings, serving as objects of tourism and as lynchpins for local and even national economies. Chapman argues that these sites also remain important to surrounding residents, both as a means of income and as continuing sources of spiritual meaning. He examines the complexities of heritage efforts in the context of present-day expectations by focusing on the roles of both outside and indigenous experts in conservation and management and on attempts by local populations to reclaim their patrimony and play a larger role in protection and interpretation. Tracing the history of interventions aimed at halting time’s decay, Chapman provides a chronicle of conservation efforts over a century and a half, highlighting the significant part foreign expertise has played in the region and the ways that national programs have, in recent years, begun to break from earlier models. The book ends with suggestions for how Southeast Asian managers and officials might best protect their incomparable heritage of art and architecture and how this legacy might be preserved for future generations.

Book excerpt: Civil law provides a framework within which people conduct their daily lives, and civil court cases often relate to problems that affect people's basic life opportunities and well-being. This is the 2nd edition of this publication which sets out the key findings of surveys conducted in England and Wales in 2001 and 2004, the most extensive of its kind so far, undertaken to examine people's experiences of civil law problems, including exploring social, economic and health consequences. Issues discussed include: the links between the civil justice system, crime and social exclusion, the relatively infrequent use of formal legal processes, and the obstacles that can prevent problems being resolved.

Book Quantitative Methods in Reservoir Engineering

Download or read book Quantitative Methods in Reservoir Engineering written by Wilson C Chin and published by Gulf Professional Publishing. This book was released on 2002-07-18 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the practitioner, this volume is a valuable tool for predicting reservoir flow in the most efficient and profitable manner possible, using quantitative methods rather than anecdotal and outdated methods. For the student, this volume offers insight not covered in other textbooks. Too many approaches in traditional petroleum engineering are based on "ad hoc" and "common sense" methods that have no rigorous mathematical basis. Most textbooks dealing with reservoir engineering do not go into the necessary mathematical detail and depth. This new book by Wilson Chin, a revision of two earlier books published by Gulf Publishing, Modern Reservoir Flow and Well Transient Analysis and Formation Invasion, integrates rigorous mathematical methods for simulating and predicting reservoir flow both near and away from the well. - Predicts reservoir flow to maximize resources, time, and profits - Includes problems and solutions for students - Presents mathematical models in an easy-to-understand and easy-to-simulate format
