Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty Years on the Saskatchewan, N. W. Canada This book contains a narrative of the life and thoughts of a simple missionary during twenty years spent in North-Western Canada. It is dedicated, with much respect, to those dear friends on both sides of the sea who have so often cheered this missionary with their help and sympathy. To make the experience of the missionary appear real to other people, it has been necessary to speak of many personal and local matters; but the general subjects that are mentioned will have their interest for readers whose thoughts may be turning sometimes to North-Western Canada, and especially to the Edmonton district of Alberta, as this has been the centre of the missionary work that is narrated, and the standpoint of the observations that are made on the history, races, and customs of the people brought under review. The references that are made to the origin of our: Indian tribes, and their intimate relationship with Eastern Asia, only represent a small part of the results of the missionary's reading and reflection on the whole problem of ancient America. Book Saskatchewan s Communities in the 21st Century

Download or read book Saskatchewan s Communities in the 21st Century written by Jack C. Stabler and published by University of Regina Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report traces the evolution of Saskatchewan's trade centre system for the 40 years between 1961 & 2001. For assessing & classifying communities into functional categories, 68 variables are used. In assessing a community's status & future prospects, the systematic trade centre relationships, the demand thresholds required to support trade & service activities, and the impact of non-systematic events such as the establishment of a manufacturing plant or mine are taken into account. The relationship between infrastructure & economic development is also discussed. The events summarized emphasize a continuous extension of the geographic framework within which people journey to work, shop, attend school, obtain health care and, in general, live their everyday lives. In this process, the concept of community, as a functional entity, has evolved from village or town to a region large enough to satisfy the everyday requirements of rural dwellers.

Download or read book Saskatchewan written by W. A. Waiser and published by Calgary : Fifth House. This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Saskatchewan: A New History, award-winning author and historian Bill Waiser presents a fresh, entertaining account and interpretation of Saskatchewan's unique and captivating history. Writing with clarity, candor, and compassion, Waiser describes in detail his province and its people through the stimulating, often tumultuous years since joining Confederation in 1905. A gift to the province from the University of Saskatchewan, written in commemoration of the province's centennial celebrations in 2005, Saskatchewan: A New History tells, above all, the engaging stories of the people of Saskatchewan. Their wisdom, foresight, bravery, toil, and eternal optimism gave birth to one hundred years of extraordinary history. Waiser leaves no stone unturned as he records the events and stories of the people who experienced them: from the province's earliest days, when anything seemed possible; through the years of the Great Depression, when the prospect of greatness seemed all but lost; to the second half of the century, when an intense, at times bitter, debate raged over how best to govern Saskatchewan. Relying on the most up-to-date historical research available, he offers new perspectives on traditional views and tackles previously neglected, often difficult, concepts and events. What is most striking about these images, aside from the richness of their color and the skillful use of light, are the happy, smiling faces. He could see things like no one else with a camera. He had an uncanny skill to set the scene. He caught people in everyday life and everyday activities and people wanted to have their picture taken by him. Generously illustrated with carefully selected archival images and two sixteen-page color inserts of commissioned photographs by Saskatoon's John Perret, Saskatchewan: A New History also pays a stunning visual tribute to the historical, urban, and natural splendour of Saskatchewan and its people. Includes: two 16-page color photo inserts by John Perret, 205 Black and White photographs and illustrations, 20 reference tables, 15 maps . . . and more.
