Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although semiconductor-diode lasers are the most compact, highest gain and most efficient laser sources, difficulties remain in developing structures that will produce high-quality, diffraction-limited output beams. Indeed, only a few designs have emerged with the potential for producing high-power, high-brightness monolithic sources. This book presents and analyzes the results of work performed over the past two decades in the development of such diode-laser arrays.

Book Diode Pumped Micro Laser Arrays

Book excerpt: In this work SDL investigated the operation of 2-D high power micro- laser arrays based on novel monolithic surface-emitting laser diode arrays coupled to Yb:YAG and Er:YSGG micro-laser crystals. The experimental demonstrations include: (1) 200 mW, q-cw single Yb:YAG microlaser; (2) 930 mW cw linear, 12-element Er:YSGG micro-laser; (3) 130 Watt q-cw 2-D surface-emitting laser diode array at 970 nm; and (4) 600 mW, q-cw from an 18-element 3-D Er:YSGG microlaser array. The experiments performed at SDL under this contract demonstrate the suitability of monolithic 2-D laser diode arrays for pumping solids state lasers. In addition, the experiments show the flexibility of the micro-laser concept. Using different pump wavelengths in combination with different micro-lasers a wide output wavelength range from 1 micron to 3 micron is demonstrated. Finally, the micro-laser array is shown to be scalable by exploiting one- and two-dimensional laser diode pump arrays.

Book Tailoring the Emission of Stripe array Diode Lasers with External Cavities to Enable Nonlinear Frequency Conversion

Download or read book Tailoring the Emission of Stripe array Diode Lasers with External Cavities to Enable Nonlinear Frequency Conversion written by Andreas Jechow and published by Universitätsverlag Potsdam. This book was released on 2009 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A huge number of applications require coherent radiation in the visible spectral range. Since diode lasers are very compact and efficient light sources, there exists a great interest to cover these applications with diode laser emission. Despite modern band gap engineering not all wavelengths can be accessed with diode laser radiation. Especially in the visible spectral range between 480 nm and 630 nm no emission from diode lasers is available, yet. Nonlinear frequency conversion of near-infrared radiation is a common way to generate coherent emission in the visible spectral range. However, radiation with extraordinary spatial temporal and spectral quality is required to pump frequency conversion. Broad area (BA) diode lasers are reliable high power light sources in the near-infrared spectral range. They belong to the most efficient coherent light sources with electro-optical efficiencies of more than 70%. Standard BA lasers are not suitable as pump lasers for frequency conversion because of their poor beam quality and spectral properties. For this purpose, tapered lasers and diode lasers with Bragg gratings are utilized. However, these new diode laser structures demand for additional manufacturing and assembling steps that makes their processing challenging and expensive. An alternative to BA diode lasers is the stripe-array architecture. The emitting area of a stripe-array diode laser is comparable to a BA device and the manufacturing of these arrays requires only one additional process step. Such a stripe-array consists of several narrow striped emitters realized with close proximity. Due to the overlap of the fields of neighboring emitters or the presence of leaky waves, a strong coupling between the emitters exists. As a consequence, the emission of such an array is characterized by a so called supermode. However, for the free running stripe-array mode competition between several supermodes occurs because of the lack of wavelength stabilization. This leads to power fluctuations, spectral instabilities and poor beam quality. Thus, it was necessary to study the emission properties of those stripe-arrays to find new concepts to realize an external synchronization of the emitters. The aim was to achieve stable longitudinal and transversal single mode operation with high output powers giving a brightness sufficient for efficient nonlinear frequency conversion. For this purpose a comprehensive analysis of the stripe-array devices was done here. The physical effects that are the origin of the emission characteristics were investigated theoretically and experimentally. In this context numerical models could be verified and extended. A good agreement between simulation and experiment was observed. One way to stabilize a specific supermode of an array is to operate it in an external cavity. Based on mathematical simulations and experimental work, it was possible to design novel external cavities to select a specific supermode and stabilize all emitters of the array at the same wavelength. This resulted in stable emission with 1 W output power, a narrow bandwidth in the range of 2 MHz and a very good beam quality with M²<1.5. This is a new level of brightness and brilliance compared to other BA and stripe-array diode laser systems. The emission from this external cavity diode laser (ECDL) satisfied the requirements for nonlinear frequency conversion. Furthermore, a huge improvement to existing concepts was made. In the next step newly available periodically poled crystals were used for second harmonic generation (SHG) in single pass setups. With the stripe-array ECDL as pump source, more than 140 mW of coherent radiation at 488 nm could be generated with a very high opto-optical conversion efficiency. The generated blue light had very good transversal and longitudinal properties and could be used to generate biphotons by parametric down-conversion. This was feasible because of the improvement made with the infrared stripe-array diode lasers due to the development of new physical concepts.

Book High Power Linear Arrays of 1 9 Mum Laser Diodes

Download or read book High Power Linear Arrays of 1 9 Mum Laser Diodes written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We demonstrated and delivered high-power (>1OW) linear arrays of laser diodes that emit near 1.9 micronmeter. Significant applications include illuminators for night visionp06/00 cameras and new sources for gas sensing of such species as HBr, HCl and H2O. In Phase I we achieved 0.5 W of 300K CW optical power at 1.95 micronmeter with our broadened waveguide (BW)" structure. In Phase II we optimized modifications to our Phase I structure and have produced record power outputs in the 0.8 micronmeter to 1.55 micronmeter spectrum. This novel structure allows the optical mode to spread out and decreases internal losses from free-carrier absorption. Waveguide parameters were adjusted-to permit higher power output at lower threshold and reduced temperature sensitivity. The two-step waveguide active region has lower energy barrier near the quantum wells, which employs "strain- compensated" active regions. Gas source molecular beam epitaxy was to be used to make 1x5 linear arrays of lasers with 200 micronmeter apertures. Packaging innovations allow extended reliable high-power operation with standard user-friendly commercial semiconductor laser packages.

Book High Power High Beam Quality Mid infrared Quantum Cascade Lasers

Download or read book High Power High Beam Quality Mid infrared Quantum Cascade Lasers written by Jae Ha Ryu and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coherent power scaling of quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) for high-power, single-mode continuous-wave (CW) operation has proven to be quite a difficult task - while the device volume could be scaled for higher output power, many other factors such as beam quality and thermal resistance are negatively impacted if the device design is not carefully considered. The main objective of this work has been to develop methods for realizing high continuous-wave (CW) output power QCLs with high beam quality and minimal beam steering. One attractive approach for tackling this problem is the use of resonant leaky-wave-coupled antiguided phase-locked laser arrays. This dissertation focusses on two approaches to achieve high coherent power: 1) one alternate to the resonant leaky-wave-coupled antiguided phase-locked array concept, so called 'reverse-taper'laser; and 2) one combining grating-coupled surface-emitting lasers (GCSELs) with resonant leaky-wave-coupled antiguided phase-locked arrays, where each array element is coupled in both the lateral and longitudinal direction; thus, has a potential for multi-watt -CW surface-emitted output powers with good beam quality and narrow spectral linewidth. The novel geometry reverse-taper QCL device can scale the output power while maintaining good beam quality and beam stability - the tapered region scales the output power, while the emitting facet is located at the narrow-end taper section, which provides mode filtering by suppressing high-order spatial modes. A small degree of collimated-beam centroid movement (
