Cooperative computing is an important computing paradigm to enable different parties to work together towards a pre defined non-trivial goal. It encompasses important technological areas like computer supported cooperative work, workflow, computer assisted design and concurrent programming. As technologies continue to advance and evolve, there is an increasing need to research and develop new classes of middlewares and applications to leverage on the combined benefits of Internet and web to provide users and programmers with highly interactive and robust cooperative computing environment. It is the aim of this forum to promote close interactions and exchange of ideas among researchers, academics and practitioners on the state-of-the art researches in all of these exciting areas. We have partnered with Kluwer Acedamic Press this year to bring to you a book compilation of the papers that were presented at the CIC2002 workshop. The importance of the research area is reflected both in the quality and quantity of the submitted papers, where each paper was reviewed by at least three PC members. As a result, we were able to only accept 14 papers for full presentation at the workshop, while having to reject several excellent papers due to the limitations of the program schedule.

It was a collaborative project involving research institutes and universities in Bologna, Grenoble, Lausanne, Lisbon, Rennes, Rocquencourt, Newcastle, and Twente. The World Wide Web had recently been developed at CERN, but its use was not yet as common place as it is today and graphical browsers had yet to be developed. It was clear to us (and to just about everyone else) that LSDCS comprising several thousands to millions of individual computer systems (nodes) would be coming into existence as a consequence both of technological advances and the demands placed by applications. We were excited about the problems of building large distributed systems, and felt that serious rethinking of many of the existing computational paradigms, algorithms, and structuring principles for distributed computing was called for. In our research proposal, we summarized the problem domain as follows: “We expect LSDCS to exhibit great diversity of node and communications capability. Nodes will range from (mobile) laptop computers, workstations to supercomputers. Whereas mobile computers may well have unreliable, low bandwidth communications to the rest of the system, other parts of the system may well possess high bandwidth communications capability. To appreciate the problems posed by the sheer scale of a system comprising thousands of nodes, we observe that such systems will be rarely functioning in their entirety.

Sophisticated customers will demand products customized to meet their needs. Industries have so far sought to cope with these challenges primarily through advances in traditional capital by installing more powerful hardware and software technology. Attention to the role of humans combined with organizational and social schemes in manufacturing has only been marginal. The workshop HUMACS 2001 aimed to challenge the relevance of this last point.

This form of code mobility lays the foundation for a new generation of technologies, architectures, models, and - plications in which the location at which the code is executed comes under the control of the designer, rather than simply being a con?guration accident. Among the various ?avors of mobile code, the mobile agent paradigm has become particularly popular. Mobile agents are programs able to determine - tonomously their own migration to a di?erent host, and still retain their code and state (or at least a portion thereof). Thus, distributed computations do not necessarily unfold as a sequence of requests and replies between clients and - mote servers, rather they encompass one or more visits of one or more mobile agents to the nodes involved. Mobile code and mobile agents hold the potential to shape the next gene- tion of technologies and models for distributed computation. The ?rst steps of this process are already evident today: Web applets provide a case for the least sophisticated form of mobile code, Java-based distributed middleware makes - creasing use of mobile code, and the ?rst commercial applications using mobile agents are starting to appear.

Building on the success of the previous WCW meetings, WCW 2004 extended its scope and covered interesting research and deployment areas relating to content services as they move through the Internet. This year, WCW was held in Beijing, China. Although it was the first time that WCW was held in Asia, we received more than 50 high quality papers from five continents. Fifteen papers were accepted as regular papers and 6 papers as synopses to appear in the proceedings. The topics covered included architectural issues, routing and placement, caching in both traditional content delivery networks as well as in peer-- peer systems, systems management and deployment, and performance evaluation. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who submitted papers to WCW 2004 for their valued contribution to the workshop. This event would not have been possible without the broad and personal support and the invaluable suggestions and contributions of the members of the program committee and the steering committee.
