Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heads above Water tells the stories of women and their families who survived the Grand Forks, North Dakota, flood of 1997, one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history. This book describes the challenges women faced and explores the importance of class, race, gender, sexual orientation, and disability in their disaster recovery. The women found themselves face-to-face with social and familial upheaval, emotional and physical trauma, precarious economic and social status, and feelings of loss and violation. By exploring the experiences of these women, author Alice Fothergill contributes to broader sociological discussions about women's changing roles, the stigma of needing and receiving assistance, family relationships under stress, domestic violence, downward mobility, and the importance of "home" to one's identity and sense of self. Heads above Water offers poignant insight into women's everyday lives in an extraordinary time.

Book excerpt: Flooding is a fact of life along the Red River. The disastrous flood of 1997, while a rare event, was neither unprecedented nor unforeseen. As the 1997 International Red River Basin Task Force report, Red River Flooding: Short-Term Measures concluded, "The flood of 1997 or an even larger one could happen any year." The Task Force conducted historical, geological and statistical analysis that supports this conclusion. In this report, the Task Force explores the implications associated with large floods"that is, floods of the magnitude of 1997 or larger"for the people, communities, and governments in the Red River basin. It responds to the concerns of the public and experts about the preparation needed to avoid or reduce damage from large floods. The report also discusses issues of particular concern arising from the 1997 flood. While the Task Force studied some aspects of response and recovery issues, this report focuses on preparedness and mitigation for major floods

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fargo, North Dakota, and Moorhead, Minnesota, have existed on opposite sides of the Red River of the North since 1871. Ever since, heavy moisture from melting snow has combined with spring rains to threaten both towns with a rapidly rising, twisting river. Minor flooding is almost an annual event, and on six occasions the two towns experienced major floods requiring evacuations of large numbers of residents. The history of these floods is covered in the photographs contained in this book, including many provided by residents, local flood-fighting crews, and state and federal agencies. These images tell the story of how the two communities deal with one of nature's most common dangers.
