Book The Missing Headlines

Download or read book The Missing Headlines written by Emeka Anyaoku and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chief Emeka Anyaoku, third Commonwealth Secretary-General and the first African holder of the office, has immense international experience and commands wide international respect, having been a key player in world diplomacy. Emeka Anyaoku has a long involvement with the Commonwealth, having been Assistant Director, and then Director of International Affairs (1966-75); Assistant Secretary-General (1975-77); and Deputy Secretary-General (1978-83 and 1984-89). His first elected term as Secretary-General began in 1990. This selection of insightful and inspirational speeches, mainly from Anyaoku's first period of office (1990-95), on major world events and themes highlights the role he has played in world affairs. It also shows the often unrecognized strength and influence of the Commonwealth in altering the course of history for the improvement of the lot and condition of mankind-particularly where deep deprivation and absence of basic human rights are involved. Emeka Anyaoku's selected speechesare grouped into a series of themes: The Changing Commonwealth; Democracy; The Commonwealth and the Making of the New South Africa; Sustainable Development; Development and Democracy in Africa; Nigeria in Transition; Peace and Security in a Pluralistic World; Toward a Common Humanity. In a context-setting introduction, Chief Anyaoku explains the choice of speeches, drawing out common threads. He also has a word about the title of the book, which reflects the "missing headlines", the often unreported aspects of the Commonwealth's work. This book will, Anyaoku hopes, 'reveal some of these "missing headlines" and encourage greater public debate on the work of the Commonwealth. As we enter the newmillennium, this book offers a major insight into key issues and emerging international concerns.

Download or read book Terrorism written by Ben Saul and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-02-07 with total page 1620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International anti-terrorism measures existed long before 11 September 2001 but have increased markedly since. A myriad of norms in different branches of law are now deployed to confront transnational and domestic terrorism. There is also a proliferating body of 'soft law' addressing terrorism, stemming from United Nations organs, specialised international bodies and regional organisations. It is timely to draw together these diverse legal developments over time into a single reference work. Bringing the original documents together provides for ease of reference and enables scholars, practitioners and students to more easily compare and contrast various sources. The book's coverage is comprehensive (thematically, organisationally, geographically and temporally) and open to a balance of sources (hard and soft), but is judicious in its selection and prioritisation of the most significant and representative documents - in a field where there are many repetitive or insubstantial documents. Importantly, the book looks beyond the traditional trans-Atlantic bias towards European, British and American sources in this area to include materials from Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East. Taken as a whole, the book aids in evidencing the emerging field of international anti-terrorism law.

Book The Responsibility to Protect and the Failures of the United Nations Security Council

Download or read book The Responsibility to Protect and the Failures of the United Nations Security Council written by P M Butchard and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-04-02 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can be done if the United Nations Security Council fails to protect people from mass atrocities? At a time of inaction and political paralysis at the United Nations, this book explains the legality of alternative action beyond the Security Council. This book takes a fresh look at the responsibility to protect and offers new and compelling insights into the powers and limits of the UN Security Council. It argues that the Security Council's responsibility to maintain international peace and security, and its responsibility to protect, do not die with its own failures. Other actors can and must take up responsibility to save those in need. In a persuasive and detailed examination of the legal framework, this research identifies options for coercive measures to be taken beyond the Council that could be used to break the deadlock, including through the General Assembly and regional organisations. It provides a must-have resource for students, academics, and researchers on key principles of international law. It also offers insight for governments, policy-makers, and other international actors on how they can uphold their legal responsibilities, maintain peace and security, and prevent their failures from undermining the very existence of the UN itself.

Book Elasmobranch Biodiversity Conservation and Management

Download or read book Elasmobranch Biodiversity Conservation and Management written by Sarah L. Fowler and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2002 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Darwin Elasmobranch Biodiversity Conservation and Management project in Sabah held a three-day international seminar that included a one-day workshop in order to highlight freshwater and coastal elasmobranch conservation issues in the region and worldwide, to disseminate the result of the project to other Malaysian states and countries, and to raise awareness of the importance of considering aspects of elasmobranch biodiversity in the context of nature conservation, commercial fisheries management, and for subsistence fishing communities. These proceedings contain numerous peer-reviewed papers originally presented at the seminar, which cover a wide range of topics, with particular reference to species from freshwater and estuarine habitats. The workshop served to develop recommendations concerning the future prospects of elasmobranch fisheries, biodiversity, conservation and management. This paper records those conclusions, which highlight the importance of elasmobranchs as top marine predators and keystone species, noting that permanent damage to shark and ray populations are likely to have serious and unexpected negative consequences for commercial and subsistence yields of other important fish stocks.
