Book Transformations in Traditional Rule in Ghana 1951 1996

Download or read book Transformations in Traditional Rule in Ghana 1951 1996 written by Kwame Arhin and published by Sedco Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work traces the ebbs and flows of the influence of traditional rule in Ghanaian politics since 1951, the beginning of the end of the colonial era. The study's starting point is Ashanti, and the author goes on to show that whereas traditional rule waned in the first phase of independence under the government of the Convention Peoples' Party and Kwame Nkrumah, it grew it strength during subsequent periods of military regime. The author explores and suggests explanations for the revival and strengthening of the institution under military regimes and the linkage between traditional rule and political/military coups in a political climate where military interventions were becoming regular features of African political culture. There is also a chapter on the position of women in the system of traditional rule.

Book Jesus Christ as Logos Incarnate and Resurrected Nana Ancestor

Download or read book Jesus Christ as Logos Incarnate and Resurrected Nana Ancestor written by Rudolf K. Gaisie and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-10-16 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to demonstrate the significance of Ancestor Christology in African Christianity for christological developments in World Christianity. Ancestor Christology has developed in the process of an African conversion story of appropriating the mystery of Christ (Eph 3:4) in the category of ancestors. Logos Christology in early Christian history developed as an intricate byproduct in the conversion process of turning Hellenistic ideas towards the direction of Christ (A. F. Walls). Hellenistic Christian writers and modern African Christian writers thus share some things in common and when their efforts are examined within the conversion process framework there are discernible modes of engagement. The mode of Logos Christology that one finds in Origen, for example, is an innovative application of the understanding of Jesus Christ as Logos (incarnate); a new key but not discontinuous with the Johannine suggestive mode or the clarificatory mode of Justin Martyr. African Ancestor Christology is at the threshold of an innovative mode and the argument this book makes is that this strand of African Christology should be pursued in the indigenous languages aided by respective translated Bibles; a suggested way is a Logos-Ancestor (Nanasɛm) discourse in Akan Christianity.

Book Divine Rulers in a Secular State

Download or read book Divine Rulers in a Secular State written by Timo Kallinen and published by BoD - Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In present-day Africa chiefs interact fluently with modern states, international organizations, and business corporations, and traditional chieftaincy is perceived essentially as a secular institution. Consequently, social scientists have started paying serious attention to the role of traditional authorities in contemporary political landscapes. Yet it was only a few decades ago that classic ethnographers were characterizing chiefs as priests, magicians, diviners, rainmakers, and the like. What happened to the divinity of African chiefs and kings? Drawing on his research on the Asante people of Ghana, West Africa, Timo Kallinen explores how the colonial and postcolonial states have attempted to secularize the sacred institutions of chiefship and kingship, a process which is by no means complete. Furthermore, it has frequently proved a problematic undertaking with regards to a number of burning issues in contemporary Ghanaian society, such as Pentecostal-Charismatic Christianity, nationalism, international development aid, civil society participation, coup d'états, and witchcraft.

Book A Descriptive Analysis of Adamorobe Sign Language Ghana

Download or read book A Descriptive Analysis of Adamorobe Sign Language Ghana written by Victoria Anna Sophie Nyst and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adamorobe, a small Akan village in Ghana, has an unusually high incidence of hereditary deafness. As a result, a sign language came into being, Adamorobe Sign Language (AdaSL), which is unrelated to any other sign language described so far and is assumed to be about 200 years old. The present study describes selected aspects of AdaSL, notably phonology, lexicon, the expression of size and shape and the encoding of motion events. A comparison of these aspects with descriptions of other sign languages reveals interesting cross-linguistic differences in the use of iconicity as well as in the use of space and classifier constructions. Data were collected during three periods of fieldwork of nine months in total. Moreover, this study considers to what extent the social setting may influence the development of structural features in sign languages. This investigation nuances the impact the visual-spatial modality has on sign language structure. The book is of interest to scholars of sign linguistics, African linguistics, as well as contact linguistics and Deaf studies.

Download or read book Law in Light written by LAUREN. COYLE ROSEN and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-10-15 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Law in Light is a groundbreaking book on the resurgence and transformation of Akan path spiritual communities in the United States and Ghana. Drawing on extensive collaborative ethnographic research, the book offers powerful portraits of priestesses, priests, and others on their spiritual journeys, in their ancestral reconnections, and in their everyday lives. The book spotlights a queen mother, shrine elders, priests, and priestesses of a prominent shrine house in Maryland, as well as leaders at a legendary Asuo Gyebi source shrine in Ghana. In exploring worlds of healing, empowerment, and justice, Lauren Coyle Rosen argues for the importance of two novel theoretical concepts, which she calls copresent jurisdictions and constellations of subjectivity. The book urges a broader retheorization of alternative spiritual orders within contemporary theopolitical, cosmopolitical, and postjuristocratic debates.

Book Pentecostal Exorcism

  • Author : Opoku Onyinah
  • Publisher : BRILL
  • Release : 2019-05-21
  • ISBN : 9004397108

Download or read book Pentecostal Exorcism written by Opoku Onyinah and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-05-21 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Witchcraft" and exorcism have long been dominant features of life in African cultures. This unique book provides a thorough, field research-based description and analysis of a specifically Pentecostal Christian response to these phenomena within the Akan culture of Ghana. Anthropological studies generally claim that the ultimate goal of exorcism is modernisation. Using interdisciplinary studies with a theological focus, the author takes a different view, arguing that it is divinatory consultation or an inquiry into the sacred and the search for meaning that underlies the current "deliverance" ministry, where the focus is to identify and break down the so-called demonic forces by the power of God and to "deliver" people from their torment. The deliverance ministry is one attempt to contextualise the gospel for African people. However, preoccupation with demonisation and exorcistic practices is found to bring Christianity into tension with the Akan culture, family ties and other religions. In order to develop a properly safeguarded ministry of exorcism in an African context, the author examines contextualisation and suggests the integration into African Christianity of divinatory consultation, which has strong resonances with the biblical concept of prayer.
