Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "23 Things I Wish I Could Ask..." isn't your ordinary self-help or spiritual book for grief and loss. A book of questions -- one question in quiet reflection on each page, It's more like a walk of discovery in a beautiful art exhibit, each piece of art asking you a different question. If you like or have thought about dipping your toe into philosophy, meditation, Stoicism and poetic readings in little bites to easily absorb....this book is a welcome, comforting read to open you up, make you feel what you needed to feel, ultimately joyful about moving your own life forward. If you've ever found yourself thinking about a loved one you've lost ... or about someone still alive but not around in your life, and wishing you could talk to them...ask them just one more question keeping you up at night and rushing into your thoughts during the day....this book is something to hold in your hands, by your night table or favorite quiet place with your morning or afternoon coffee or tea. "23 Things..." is a book of questions -- all questions -- the author wrote to open himself up and move his life forward.Mourning and grieving can be, after a point, destructive. Unanswered questions can be haunting. The author, Jan Zlotnick, found himself, before and during the pandemic, asking questions out loud to his parents, who died many years prior. He found that putting the questions in writing and reflecting on them was as much about listening to himself as listening for answers from his loved ones. It also made him think of the questions his own children and friends and family might have for him today. After the last page, where Jan recalls his most cherished question as a child in the dark...there is even a way to ask your own question to Jan.

Book excerpt: "Abbie Hoffman, Yippie non-leader, notorious dope addict and up-and-coming rock group (the WHAT), is currently on trial with seven others for conspiracy to incite riot during the Democratic Convention. When he returned from the Woodstock Festival he had five days before leaving for Chicago to prepare for the trial. Woodstock Nation, which the author wrote in longhand while lying upside down, stoned, on the floor of an unused office of the publisher, is the product of those five days. Other works by Mr. Hoffman include Revolution for the Hell of It and Fuck the System, which he describes as a "tender love epic"."-- Back cover.
Download or read book Class of 67 written by Jack Wells and published by . This book was released on 2009-12-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Class of '67, former Marine lieutenant Jack Wells delivers a moving and fitting eulogy to the forty-three lieutenants who were in Marine Officers Basic Class 6-67, and who died in Vietnam. Another classmate died years later in Lebanon. As the war escalated, the number of Marine officers sent into battle increased dramatically. The highest eschelon of Marine commanders were greatly concerned about the high casualties, but with the war raging, and with Marines never backing away from a fight, or trying to protect their men, the casualties continued to climb. This book is a memorial to those men who made the ultimate sacrifice for their men and country. As Wells introduces each of the forty-four, readers will be moved by the enormity of loss: loss of youth, loss of leadership, loss of the best...and the brightest. Whether we support a war or march against it, nothing diminishes the significance of what each man sacrificed for country and family. Over 160 color and b&w photos, plus 14 maps in the book.

This book was released on 2018-08 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are a gathering of extraordinary individuals who met under extraordinary circumstances. Coming of age in a small high school in Morocco decades ago, we have something unique in common, and decades later it has somehow never left us. We are the Sultans of Thomas Mack Wilhoite/Kenitra American High School. Be it the first graduating class of three Seniors in 1956 to the last Class of 1976, our experiences as students were sharply tuned to our environment. We were not strangers in a strange land; we were welcomed by the Moroccan people as if we were visiting relatives. The sights, sounds, tastes and smells of Morocco were absorbed by hundreds of students no matter what span of years we were there. We can all relate, and laugh at, similar experiences of our teenage years growing up in and around Kenitra/Port Lyautey, Mehdia Beach, Rabat, and other nearby military bases. Within this book are the memories of those days as told by the former students and teachers of our school.

Download or read book The Intellectual Sword written by Bruce A. Kimball and published by Belknap Press. This book was released on 2020-05-26 with total page 881 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of Harvard Law School in the twentieth century, focusing on the school’s precipitous decline prior to 1945 and its dramatic postwar resurgence amid national crises and internal discord. By the late nineteenth century, Harvard Law School had transformed legal education and become the preeminent professional school in the nation. But in the early 1900s, HLS came to the brink of financial failure and lagged its peers in scholarly innovation. It also honed an aggressive intellectual culture famously described by Learned Hand: “In the universe of truth, they lived by the sword. They asked no quarter of absolutes, and they gave none.” After World War II, however, HLS roared back. In this magisterial study, Bruce Kimball and Daniel Coquillette chronicle the school’s near collapse and dramatic resurgence across the twentieth century. The school’s struggles resulted in part from a debilitating cycle of tuition dependence, which deepened through the 1940s, as well as the suicides of two deans and the dalliance of another with the Nazi regime. HLS stubbornly resisted the admission of women, Jews, and African Americans, and fell behind the trend toward legal realism. But in the postwar years, under Dean Erwin Griswold, the school’s resurgence began, and Harvard Law would produce such major political and legal figures as Chief Justice John Roberts, Justice Elena Kagan, and President Barack Obama. Even so, the school faced severe crises arising from the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War, Critical Legal Studies, and its failure to enroll and retain people of color and women, including Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Based on hitherto unavailable sources—including oral histories, personal letters, diaries, and financial records—The Intellectual Sword paints a compelling portrait of the law school widely considered the most influential in the world.

Download or read book Class and Religion in the Late Victorian City written by Hugh McLeod and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1974, this book describes the religion of the East End, the West End, and the suburbs of London, where each section of society – as well as a variety of immigrant groups – has its own quarters, its own institutions, its distinctive codes of behaviour. While the main focus is on ideas, or unconscious assumptions, rather than institutions, two chapters examine the part played by the churches in the life of Bethnal Green, a very poor district, and of Lewisham, a prosperous suburb, and a third provides a picture of the church-going habits of each part of the city. The years 1880-1914 mark one of the most important transitions in English religious history. The latter part of the book examines the causes and consequences of these changes. This book will be of interest to students of history, and particularly those interested in issues of religion and class.

Download or read book Conduct Unbecoming written by Randy Shilts and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2014-12-16 with total page 860 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A thoroughly researched and engrossingly readable history” of gay men and women in the American armed forces by the author of And the Band Played On (The New York Times Book Review). Published during the same year the American military instituted Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, and eighteen years before President Barack Obama repealed it, Conduct Unbecoming is a landmark work of social justice and a searing indictment of the military establishment’s historic bigotry toward its gay servicemen and women. Randy Shilts’s eye-opening book describes the bravery, both exceptional and everyday, not only of gay soldiers throughout history, but also of gay men and women serving in our modern military. With each anecdote and investigation, Shilts systematically dismantles the arguments against allowing gays to serve in the military. At once a history of the American military and an account of the gay rights movement, Conduct Unbecoming is a remarkable testament to the progress achieved for gays in the military—and a revealing look at how far we have yet to go.
