Book Diamonds and War

Download or read book Diamonds and War written by David De Vries and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2010-04 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on previously unexamined historical documents found in archives in Belgium, England, Israel, the Netherlands, and the United States, this book is the first in English to tell the story of the formation of one of the world's main strongholds of diamond production and trade in Palestine during the 1930s and 1940s. The history of the diamond-cutting industry, characterized by a long-standing Jewish presence, is discussed as a social history embedded in the international political economy of its times; the genesis of the industry in Palestine is placed on a broad continuum within the geographic and economic dislocations of Dutch, Belgian, and German diamond-cutting centers. In providing a micro-historical and interdisciplinary perspective, the story of the diamond industry in Mandate Palestine proposes a more nuanced picture of the uncritical approach to the strict boundaries of ethnic-based occupational communities.

Book excerpt: During the Second World War, the Congress of Industrial Organizations in Canada grew from a handful of members to more than a quarter-million. What was it about the "good war" that brought about this phenomenal growth? Labour Goes to War argues that both economic and cultural forces were at work. Labour shortages gave workers greater economic power in the workplace. But cultural factors workers' patriotism, ties to those on active service, and allegiance to the "people's war" also fueled the CIO's growth. The complex, often contradictory, motives of workers during this period left the Canadian labour movement with an ambivalent progressive/conservative legacy.

Download or read book Democratizing the Enemy written by Brian Masaru Hayashi and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2010-12-16 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War II some 120,000 Japanese Americans were forcibly removed from their homes and detained in concentration camps in several states. These Japanese Americans lost millions of dollars in property and were forced to live in so-called "assembly centers" surrounded by barbed wire fences and armed sentries. In this insightful and groundbreaking work, Brian Hayashi reevaluates the three-year ordeal of interred Japanese Americans. Using previously undiscovered documents, he examines the forces behind the U.S. government's decision to establish internment camps. His conclusion: the motives of government officials and top military brass likely transcended the standard explanations of racism, wartime hysteria, and leadership failure. Among the other surprising factors that played into the decision, Hayashi writes, were land development in the American West and plans for the American occupation of Japan. What was the long-term impact of America's actions? While many historians have explored that question, Hayashi takes a fresh look at how U.S. concentration camps affected not only their victims and American civil liberties, but also people living in locations as diverse as American Indian reservations and northeast Thailand.

Book Families and Social Workers

Download or read book Families and Social Workers written by Pat Starkey and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Families and Social Workers examines the origins, development and impact of Family Service Units (FSU), a voluntary social work agency that, during the post-war period, exercised an influence on the development of social work practice and training out of all proportion to its size and resources. Originating in the activities of conscientious objectors in Liverpool, Manchester and Stepney during the Second World War, FSU's innovative methods of working with poor families led to the establishment of units in towns and cities throughout Britain. This study shows how FSU met the challenges and opportunities presented by the introduction of state-run social services; evaluates its successes and failures in terms of the aims that units set themselves; and examines the conflicts that arose between FSU's commitment to independence and innovation and its dependence on local authority funding.

Book Leadership and Responsibility in the second World War

Download or read book Leadership and Responsibility in the second World War written by Brian Farrell and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2004-05-11 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leadership and Responsibility in the Second World War examines how well political, diplomatic, and military leaders, particularly in Great Britain, handled the daunting challenge of a worldwide conflagration. It seeks to determine if a connection can be delineated between leadership, responsibility, success, and failure - specifically if any connection can be found between reluctance to shoulder responsibility and failure to produce results. In doing so, the authors challenge widely accepted views on major wartime controversies, such as the role of Neville Chamberlain and his Conservative party at the outbreak of the war, the reasons the British failed to reach an alliance with the Soviet Union in 1939, and the motives that drove Claus von Stauffenberg to attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first half of this century, a talented and charismatic leadership restructured the American Jewish community to meet the demands and opportunities of a pluralistic, secular society. The work of this generation of titans still guides the current modes of American Jewish life. The last of these giants was the influential reformer Stephen S. Wise--a progenitor of American Zionism, creator of the American and World Jewish Congresses, and founder of the Jewish Institute of Religion. As rabbi of the Free Synagogue, Wise led the fight for a living Judaism responsive to social problems. This engrossing study is more than a chronicle of an ethnic community's adjustment to a host society. Thanks to Melvin Urofsky's painstaking research, it succeeds in revealing the true story behind a legendary and controversial figure in American Jewish history.

Book The Second Coming and I a Reading for Leanne Long

Download or read book The Second Coming and I a Reading for Leanne Long written by John Kordupel and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2018-07-06 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How deep does the Second Creation go? The Second Coming and I:A Reading for Leanne Long seeks to answer this question. Book 1 seeks to prove reincarnation and in doing so, reveal the Second Creation. It translates alphabetical names into numerical names, permitting us to determine whether there is a nonrandom energy between different people. The greater the degree of nonrandomness, the greater the probability that one is a reincarnation of the other. It also demonstrates that our reincarnation history takes us back to the first medicine wheel, Sirius (Lemuria), home to Adam, who subsequently manifests as Jesus. Finally, author John Kordupel addresses the question of how one cures an illness that had its genesis in a previous lifetime, arising from negative energy built up over a lifetime and continuing through death. Kordupel sought out energy healer Leanne Long in an attempt to dissipate the negative energies influencing his own life, and now he shares his discoveries with the world. This study, the first volume in a series, explores a wide range of topics relating to spirituality and energies that shift among people and across lives.

Book excerpt: The creation of the League of Nations Permanent Mandates Commission (PMC) at the close of World War I and its successor, the United Nations Trusteeship Council (TC), following World War II, were watersheds in the history of modern imperialism. For the first time, the international community had asserted that the well-being of colonial peoples was not merely the private concern of metropolitan states, but a shared responsibility of humankind that transcended national boundaries. Editors R.M. Douglas, Michael D. Callahan, and Elizabeth Bishop have assembled a wide array of scholars to assess the relative weight to be placed on international influence in the process of decolonization. Across a broad cross-section of geographical and political settings, Imperialism on Trial reveals the operation of the complicated and often conflicted dynamic between the national and international dimensions of colonialism in its final and most historically consequential phase.
