  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book Liberty Ship written by Sherod Cooper and published by US Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only book devoted exclusively to a single merchantman's seagoing career during World War II, this work describes the activities of the Liberty ship John W. Brown and of the Merchant Marine and Navy Armed Guard crews who manned the ship. As the author demonstrates in this thoroughly researched account, Liberty ships carried about two-thirds of the vital cargoes transported overseas during the war and played an indispensable role in landing and supplying the troops that defeated the Axis powers in Europe and Asia. This book is based on logs, official documents, and reports in the National Archives, on the collection of unpublished Navy administrative histories in the Navy Department library, and on diaries, letters, and recollections of men who sailed on the Brown. The insights derived from the author's interviews and correspondence with a number of the Brown's wartime Merchant and Navy Armed Guard crewmen add a personal dimension to the narrative. A fine collection of photographs supplements the text.

Download or read book The Unknown War of Edward D Wood Jr written by James Pontolillo and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-07-22 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's been almost 40 years since the passing of maverick author and director Edward D. Wood, Jr., on December 10, 1978. Fate was seemingly cruel to Eddie, denying him and his work any meaningful recognition during his lifetime, but in the years since his death, a sizable cult-following has emerged. That cult initially focused on Eddie as the "worst director of all time" and his piece-de-resistance Plan 9 from Outer Space as the "worst movie of all time." While the study of Eddie's films, novels and short stories has advanced by leaps and bounds in recent decades, our knowledge of the man himself has remained stagnant. Over the years a mythology around Eddie's military service during the Second World War has been built up and repeated without critical examination. For the first time ever, The Unknown War of Edward D. Wood, Jr. uses official records to provide a factual account of Eddie's critical years in the U.S. Marine Corps (1942-1946). These records reveal to us an Eddie that has remained completely hidden from view until now. Everything you think you know about Eddie and his part in the Second World War will undergo a radical transformation as you read this book. It is not for the faint-hearted! Our understanding of not only Eddie's service in the military, but also our understanding of him as an all-too-human human being, will from this point forward never be the same. Read on and, as Eddie himself would have said, be shocked by the true and startling facts of the military service of Edward D. Wood, Jr.

Book Facilitating Injustice

Download or read book Facilitating Injustice written by Yoosun Park and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-10-17 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "On February 19, 1942, President Franklin Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066-the primary action that propelled the removal and incarceration of Japanese Americans. From the last days of that month, when California's Terminal Island became the first site of forced removal, to March of 1946, when the last of the War Relocation Authority concentration camps was finally closed, the federal government incarcerated approximately 120,000 persons of ""Japanese ancestry."" Social workers were integral cogs in this federal program of forced removal and incarceration: they vetted, registered, counseled, and tagged all affected individuals; staffed social work departments within the concentration camps; and worked in the offices administering the ""resettlement,"" the planned scattering of the population explicitly intended to prevent regional re-concentration. In its unwillingness to take a resolute stand against the removal and incarceration and carrying out its government-assigned tasks, social work enacted and thus legitimized the bigoted policies of racial profiling en masse. Facilitating Injustice reconstructs this forgotten disciplinary history to highlight an enduring tension in the field-the conflict between its purported value-base promoting pluralism and social justice and its professional functions enabling injustice and actualizing social biases. Highlighting the urgency to examine the profession's current approaches, practices, and policies within today's troubled nation, this text serves as a useful resource for students and scholars of immigration, ethnic studies, internment studies, U.S. history, American studies, and social welfare policy/history."

Book The First Black United States Marines

Download or read book The First Black United States Marines written by Ronald K. Culp and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-06-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On June 1, 1942, the United States Marine Corps broke a 144-year tradition and enlisted the first black Marines. Three months later, more than 400 black volunteers began their training as members of the 51st Composite Defense Battalion at Montford Point, a Marine camp of over five square miles located within Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. Informed by personal interviews, this volume takes an in-depth look at the men who braved the color barrier and became the first black Marines. Beginning with a look at the pre-World War II Marine Corps, it examines the creed and contemporary image of the USMC. The main focus is the experiences of the new black Marines. Additional topics include internal Marine perspectives on the admittance of blacks, initially enforced quotas, and the difficulties of segregation. Appendices provide information regarding monthly inductions into the Marine Corps from 1941 to 1945; rank and pay structure; depot and ammunition companies from 1943 to 1946; and Pacific Ocean area units of fire for ground weapons.
