Download or read book The History of Human Populations written by P. M. G. Harris and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2001-07-30 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From classic demographic theory to the best contemporary thinking, this book will fruitfully replace previous ways of looking at population expansion and contraction. The 50 years of scholarship that covers 2 1/2 millennia, peoples in all parts of the world, and aggregates from hamlets to the global level, this volume shows that populations grow or decline according to six related patterns. Looking at the path taken by unrestricted population growth, the effects of limited resources, demographic disaster, population explosion, and the implications of stable population theory and demographic transition for numerical trends, Harris reinterprets and insightfully interconnects all of these via six related growth curves, opening the way for a better understanding of how populations expand through changes in births, deaths, and migrations and how they interact with their economic, social, and physical environments. All six trend types, the book shows, are shaped by forces internal to the dynamics of populations themselves. Most frequently, they increase in a constantly proportionally slowing curve as a specific stimulus is spent through expansion. With shocks like war or epidemics, they contract according to an upside down version of this curve. The only two curves until recent times, these are still the most common in local populations. With modern economic and social change, some populations--mostly larger ones--follow one of four newer growth patterns, either increasing at a steady rate, growing in a gradually slowing pattern between this constancy and the rapidly decelerating basic growth curve, exploding in an accelerating fashion, or in a few ominous cases, decreasing in an accelerating decline. Where these curves occur depends on the distinctive ways populations interact with economic changes. Harris's findings have profound implications for understanding economic and social change. These implications will be discussed in the following volume.

Download or read book The Museum Age in Austria Hungary written by Matthew Rampley and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2021-02-25 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important critical study of the history of public art museums in Austria-Hungary explores their place in the wider history of European museums and collecting, their role as public institutions, and their involvement in the complex cultural politics of the Habsburg Empire. Focusing on institutions in Vienna, Cracow, Prague, Zagreb, and Budapest, The Museum Age in Austria-Hungary traces the evolution of museum culture over the long nineteenth century, from the 1784 installation of imperial art collections in the Belvedere Palace (as a gallery open to the public) to the dissolution of Austria-Hungary after the First World War. Drawing on source materials from across the empire, the authors reveal how the rise of museums and display was connected to growing tensions between the efforts of Viennese authorities to promote a cosmopolitan and multinational social, political, and cultural identity, on the one hand, and, on the other, the rights of national groups and cultures to self-expression. They demonstrate the ways in which museum collecting policies, practices of display, and architecture engaged with these political agendas and how museums reflected and enabled shifting forms of civic identity, emerging forms of professional practice, the production of knowledge, and the changing composition of the public sphere. Original in its approach and sweeping in scope, this fascinating study of the museum age of Austria-Hungary will be welcomed by students and scholars interested in the cultural and art history of Central Europe.

Download or read book Agricultural Development in China 1368 1968 written by Dwight H. Perkins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural Development in China explains how China's farm economy historically responded to the demands of a rising population. Dwight H. Perkins begins in the year A.D. 1368, the founding date of the Ming dynasty. More importantly, it marked the end of nearly two centuries of violent destruction and loss of life primarily connected with the rise and fall of the Mongols. The period beginning with the fourteenth century was also one in which there were no obvious or dramatic changes in farming techniques or in rural institutions. The rise in population and hence in the number of farmers made possible the rise in farm output through increased double cropping, extending irrigation systems, and much else. Issues explored in this book include the role of urbanization and long distance trade in allowing farmers in a few regions to specialize in crops most suitable to their particular region. Backing up this analysis of agricultural development is a careful examination of the quality of Chinese historical data. This classic volume, now available in a paperback edition, includes a new introduction assessing the continuing importance of this work to understanding the Chinese economy. It will be invaluable for a new generation of economists, historians, and Asian studies specialists and is part of Transaction's Asian Studies series.

Download or read book A Presbyterian Bibliography written by Harold B. Prince and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 1983 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Librarians, historians, researchers, students, and others interested in examining the literary production of Southern Presbyterian ministers and works written about them will find A Presbyterian Bibliography invaluable. A 4,187-entry listing of extant published writings of ministers ordained by or received into the Presbyterian Church in the United States in its first hundred years, 1861-1961, this bibliography lists works by and about PCUS ministers and gives locations of all editions found in eight significant theological collections in the U.S.A. Presbyterian seminary libraries are those of Austin, Columbia, Louisville, Princeton, Reformed, and Union (Virginia); included also are the libraries of the Historical Foundation of the Presbyterian and Reformed Churches and the Presbyterian Historical Society. An examination of this listing of published (i.e., printed) books, parts of books, pamphlets, and periodical article repreints shows that PCUS ministers became authors, editors, translators, poets, dramatists, composers, and essayists who wrote sermons, polemics, commentaries, Bible studies, theologies, histories, and letters to Presidents. Content notes and annotations for many books indicate individual minister contributions. A subject index, and indexes leading to every listing of a minister's name and to the main entries of the other presons gives access to the Bibliography.
