Book 1864 Census for Re Organizing the Georgia Militia

Download or read book 1864 Census for Re Organizing the Georgia Militia written by and published by Genealogical Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1864 Census for Re-organizing the Georgia Militia is a statewide census of all white males between the ages of 16 and 60 who were not at the time in the service of the Confederate States of America. Based on a law passed by the Georgia Legislature in December 1863 to provide for the protection of women, children, and invalids living at home, it is a list of some 42,000 men--many of them exempt from service--who were able to serve in local militia companies and perform such homefront duties as might be required of them. In accordance with the law, enrollment lists were drawn up by counties and within counties by militia districts. Each one of the 42,000 persons enrolled was listed by his full name, age, occupation, place of birth, and reason (if any) for his exemption from service. Sometime between 1920 and 1940 the Georgia Pension and Record Department typed up copies of these lists. Names on the typed lists, unlike most of the originals, are in alphabetical order, and it is these typed lists which form the basis of this new work by Mrs. Nancy Cornell. Checking the typed lists against the original handwritten records on microfilm in the Georgia Department of Archives & History, Mrs. Cornell was able to add some information and correct certain misspellings. She also points out that no lists were found for the counties of Burke, Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade, Dooly, Emanuel, Irwin, Johnson, Pulaski, and Wilcox.

Book excerpt: Few places in the United States feel the impact of courthouse disasters like the state of Georgia. Over its history, 75 of the state's counties have suffered 109 events resulting in the loss or severe damage of their courthouse or court offices. This book documents those destructive events, including the date, time, circumstance, and impact on records. Book Research in Georgia

Download or read book Research in Georgia written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is one of the most comprehensive guides to research sources in Georgia and especially the Georgia Department of Archives and History. Mr. Davis has painstackenly surveyed the records and their locations and compiled a book that is a watershed for Georgia historians and geneaalogists. It is written as a guide, leading him or her step-by-step to the records - many of which are unknown to even the most experienced researcher due to long years of negelect. The inclusion of an outline to the county material on microfilm can help many a travlerto realize that a trip to the archives is more useful than one to the county courthouse. I can think of no better book with which people can use as a beginning tool for research in Georgia - Ken Thomas, Genealogy, The Atlanta Constitution.

Book History of Georgia Agriculture 1732 1860

Download or read book History of Georgia Agriculture 1732 1860 written by James C. Bonner and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2009-09-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1964, A History of Georgia Agriculture describes the early land and labor systems in the state. Agriculture came to Georgia with the first settlers and was largely directed toward the economic self-sufficiency of the British Empire. James C. Bonner's portrayal of the colonial cattle industry is prescient of the later open-range West. He also clearly shows how shortages of horses and implements, poor plowing techniques, and a lack of skill in tool mechanics spawned the cotton-slaves-mules trilogy of antebellum agriculture, which in turn led to land exhaustion and eventual emigration. By the 1850s the general southern desire for economic independence promoted diversification and such scientific farming techniques as crop rotation, contour plowing, and fertilization. Planting of pasture forage to improve livestock and hold soil was advocated and the teaching of agriculture in public schools was promoted. Contemporary descriptions of individual farms and plantations are interspersed to give a picture of day to day farming. Bonner presents a picture of the average Southern farmer of 1850 which is neither that of a landless hireling nor of the traditional planter, but of a practical man trying to make a living.

Download or read book Resisting Redemption at the Georgia Polls written by Richard Hogan and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-12-12 with total page 205 pages. Book excerpt: After the Civil War, as Black freedmen prepared to exercise their new voting rights in Georgia, white supremacist groups rose to restrict their ability. Georgians faced a new prospect for brokering a class-based electoral coalition of white yeomen and Black freedmen. The failure of Reconstruction echoes today as Georgia remains a voting rights battleground. This book details this struggle for racial justice and democracy in postwar Georgia, with an eye on issues that have persisted more than 150 years later.
