Download or read book Black Huntington written by Cicero M Fain III and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2019-05-16 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How African Americans thrived in a West Virginia city By 1930, Huntington had become West Virginia's largest city. Its booming economy and relatively tolerant racial climate attracted African Americans from across Appalachia and the South. Prosperity gave these migrants political clout and spurred the formation of communities that defined black Huntington--factors that empowered blacks to confront institutionalized and industrial racism on the one hand and the white embrace of Jim Crow on the other. Cicero M. Fain III illuminates the unique cultural identity and dynamic sense of accomplishment and purpose that transformed African American life in Huntington. Using interviews and untapped archival materials, Fain details the rise and consolidation of the black working class as it pursued, then fulfilled, its aspirations. He also reveals how African Americans developed a host of strategies--strong kin and social networks, institutional development, property ownership, and legal challenges--to defend their gains in the face of the white status quo. Eye-opening and eloquent, Black Huntington makes visible another facet of the African American experience in Appalachia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black Church Beginnings provides an intimate look at the struggles of African Americans to establish spiritual communities in the harsh world of slavery in the American colonies. Written by one of today's foremost experts on African American religion, this book traces the growth of the black church from its start in the mid-1700s to the end of the nineteenth century. As Henry Mitchell shows, the first African American churches didn't just organize; they labored hard, long, and sacrificially to form a meaningful, independent faith. Mitchell insightfully takes readers inside this process of development. He candidly examines the challenge of finding adequately trained pastors for new local congregations, confrontations resulting from internal class structure in big city churches, and obstacles posed by emerging denominationalism. Original in its subject matter and singular in its analysis, Mitchell's Black Church Beginnings makes a major contribution to the study of American church history.

Book Belly Ache s Roots

Download or read book Belly Ache s Roots written by Alfreda Leola Johnson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2022-08-14 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The patriarch of the family is born into slavery and makes an unsuccessful attempt toward freedom when he runs away from his previous plantation. By chance, he falls captive at a cotton plantation of one of the riches planters in Darlington, South Carolina. His job is that of a coach driver, not having to work as a “buck” in the field. There at the plantation he meets his future wife, Matilda, working as a cook and a laundry maid in the big house. Once slavery is over, after standing in a circle with their backs turn and hands intertwine, four freed slaves walk south, north, east or west to determine their directions to start their lives. The patriarch works hard as a farmer. He accumulates and becomes successful and is very prominent in the community. He buys land in 1888 for approximately five dollars an acre, and his children inherit more than 20 acres each and build their homes by the sweat of their brows. His children are also successful farmers and their father instills in them to never work for a white man. The land is still in the family today. Each offspring has personal struggles with life’s bouts. Whatever challenges they endure they fight to keep the legacy of their father alive. Each one of them is brought to life through the voice of Belly-Ache’s Roots. Every family goes through trials, tribulations, accomplishments, happy and sad times from the days of old. Your family as well as mine has a testimony and a story to be told. Belly-Ache’s Roots may be instrumental in you finding the stories hiding in your past.

Book A Bibliography of Tennessee History 1973 1996

Download or read book A Bibliography of Tennessee History 1973 1996 written by W. Calvin Dickinson and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With some 6,000 entries, A Bibliography of Tennessee History will prove to be an invaluable resource for anyone--students, historians, librarians, genealogists--engaged in researching Tennessee's rich and colorful past. A sequel to Sam B. Smith's invaluable 1973 work, Tennessee History: A Bibliography, this book follows a similar format and includes published books and essays, as well as many unpublished theses and dissertations, that have become available during the intervening years. The volume begins with sections on Reference, Natural History, and Native Americans. Its divisions then follow the major periods of the state's history: Before Statehood, State Development, Civil War, Late Nineteenth Century, Early Twentieth Century, and Late Twentieth Century. Sections on Literature and County Histories round out the book. Included is a helpful subject index that points the reader to particular persons, places, incidents, or topics. Substantial sections in this index highlight women's history and African American history, two areas in which scholarship has proliferated during the past two decades. The history of entertainment in Tennessee is also well represented in this volume, including, for example, hundreds of citations for writings about Elvis Presley and for works that treat Nashville and Memphis as major show business centers. The Literature section, meanwhile, includes citations for fiction and poetry relating to Tennessee history as well as for critical works about Tennessee writers. Throughout, the editors have strived to achieve a balance between comprehensive coverage and the need to be selective. The result is a volume that will benefit researchers for years to come. The Editors: W. Calvin Dickinson is professor of history at Tennessee Technological University. Eloise R. Hitchcock is head reference librarian at the University of the South.
