Book excerpt: The 14th Station is a novel about a young lady named Mary Farwell originally from New Orleans, Louisiana, who decided that living on a plantation out in the country would be an ideal situation for her. Consequently, she visited Nora and Thomas Becnel living on Tree Alley Plantation near the small town of Hahnville, Louisiana. Mary showed the Becnels a letter from her father indicating he desired for them to allow Mary to live with them for an unspecified period of time so she could get adjusted to living on a plantation.

Book Hokusai 53 Stations of the Tokaido 1801

Download or read book Hokusai 53 Stations of the Tokaido 1801 written by Cristina Berna and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-10-06 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hokusais 53 Stations of the Tokaido 1801 is something completely different. It is his first. And it is one of the first at all. It is different from his famous 36 Views of Mt Fuji, which are sublime artistic expressions distilling a long lifes work. It is different from much of Hokusais other well known work, like his 100 Views of Mt Fuji. But in that series Hokusai still retained a lot of the humor and the caricature found here. It is different from the many other well known 53 Stations of the Tokaido in that Hokusai does not focus on the landscape and the markers that Hiroshige and others showed. Instead Hokusai focus on the events, the interactions between the travellers, the tales that you will share with your friends when you get back home. It was a great and earlier contribution to the Tokaido literature.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST • A PEN/FAULKNER AWARD FINALIST • Set in the eerie days of civilization’s collapse—the spellbinding story of a Hollywood star, his would-be savior, and a nomadic group of actors roaming the scattered outposts of the Great Lakes region, risking everything for art and humanity. • Now an original series on HBO Max. • Over one million copies sold! One of the New York Times’s 100 Best Books of the 21st Century Kirsten Raymonde will never forget the night Arthur Leander, the famous Hollywood actor, had a heart attack on stage during a production of King Lear. That was the night when a devastating flu pandemic arrived in the city, and within weeks, civilization as we know it came to an end. Twenty years later, Kirsten moves between the settlements of the altered world with a small troupe of actors and musicians. They call themselves The Traveling Symphony, and they have dedicated themselves to keeping the remnants of art and humanity alive. But when they arrive in St. Deborah by the Water, they encounter a violent prophet who will threaten the tiny band’s existence. And as the story takes off, moving back and forth in time, and vividly depicting life before and after the pandemic, the strange twist of fate that connects them all will be revealed. Look for Emily St. John Mandel’s bestselling new novel, Sea of Tranquility!

Book The Secrets of Station 14

Download or read book The Secrets of Station 14 written by Des Turner and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2022-02-24 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Briggens House, near Harlow in Essex, was one of the most important of the establishments requisitioned by the Special Operations Executive (SOE) during the Second World War. Its mission was to accomplish Winston Churchill's directive to 'set Europe ablaze', and, initially, the house was used as a finishing school for the Cichociemni, elite Polish saboteurs, to prepare to parachute into Nazi-occupied Poland. In need of false identity documents to avoid the arrest, interrogation and execution of its agents, SOE gradually built up a printing department on site and Station 14 became the organisation's False Document Section. This is the true story of the house and its highly skilled wartime personnel, including British officers, Polish agents and the women of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry. For the resident staff it was a relatively safe posting, but tension built as the Poles, fighting their own battle for Polish independence, competed for scarce resources in wartime Britain. SOE historian Des Turner uses first-hand accounts, memoirs and official records to reveal long-forgotten stories of tragedy, humour and frustration, giving long-overdue credit to the men and women of Briggens House who were prevented by the Secrets Act from ever speaking about their wartime work.
