Book excerpt: With Hicksville, local historians Richard and Anne Evers take us on a journey back in time from the area's 1648 land purchase from Native Americans and associations with Elias Hicks, the Jericho antislavery leader, to its transformation into a thriving twentieth-century Long Island suburb of New York City. Through evocative images and insightful text, we learn how the Long Island Railroad was dead-ended here in the Panic of 1837 and how German immigrants created a village and vacation spa in the area. Readers fly with the Lone Eagle as he coaches his wife, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, to make good landings at the Long Island Aviation Country Club. We glimpse singer and songwriter Billy Joel learning his craft as a young Hicksville piano man. At General Instrument we watch as workers win a Navy E award for developing technology to guide the Polaris missiles on our Cold War submarines. Home to goldbeaters, a Heinz pickle works, the famous Long Island potato, and epoch-making Levitt-type homes near Grumman's (whose naval aircraft won the Pacific War), Hicksville has made large contributions to the nation's social, economic, and political sectors.

Book Pole Raising and Speech Making

Download or read book Pole Raising and Speech Making written by Jennifer Eastman Attebery and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Pole Raising and Speech Making, author Jennifer Eastman Attebery focuses on the beginnings of the traditional Scandinavian Midsummer celebration and the surrounding spring-to-summer seasonal festivities in the Rocky Mountain West during the height of Swedish immigration to the area—1880–1917. Combining research in folkloristics and history, Attebery explores various ways that immigrants blended traditional Swedish Midsummer-related celebrations with local civic celebrations of American Independence Day on July 4 and the Mormons’ Pioneer Day on July 24. Functioning as multimodal observances with multiple meanings, these holidays represent and reconsider ethnicity and panethnicity, sacred and secular relationships, and the rural and the urban, demonstrating how flexible and complex traditional celebrations can be. Providing a wealth of detail and information surrounding little-studied celebrations and valuable archival and published primary sources—diaries, letters, speeches, newspaper reports, and images—Pole Raising and Speech Making is proof that non-English immigrant culture must be included when discussing “American” culture. It will be of interest to scholars and graduate students in ethnic studies, folklore, ritual and festival studies, and Scandinavian American cultural history.

Book The Supreme Court and Religion in American Life Vol 2

Download or read book The Supreme Court and Religion in American Life Vol 2 written by James Hitchcock and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-10 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School vouchers. The Pledge of Allegiance. The ban on government grants for theology students. The abundance of church and state issues brought before the Supreme Court in recent years underscores an incontrovertible truth in the American legal system: the relationship between the state and religion in this country is still fluid and changing. This, the second of two volumes by historian and legal scholar James Hitchcock, offers a complete analysis and interpretation of the Court's historical understanding of religion, explaining the revolutionary change that occurred in the 1940s. In Volume I: The Odyssey of the Religion Clauses (Princeton), Hitchcock provides the first comprehensive survey of the court cases involving the Religion Clauses, including a number that scholars have ignored. Here, Hitchcock examines how, in the early history of our country, a strict separation of church and state was sustained through the opinions of Jefferson and Madison, even though their views were those of the minority. Despite the Founding Fathers' ideas, the American polity evolved on the assumption that religion was necessary to a healthy society, and cooperation between religion and government was assumed. This view was seldom questioned until the 1940s, notes Hitchcock. Then, with the beginning of the New Deal and the appointment of justices who believed they had the freedom to apply the Constitution in new ways, the judicial climate changed. Hitchcock reveals the personal histories of these justices and describes how the nucleus of the Court after World War II was composed of men who were alienated from their own faiths and who looked at religious belief as irrational, divisive, and potentially dangerous, assumptions that became enshrined in the modern jurisprudence of the Religion Clauses. He goes on to offer a fascinating look at how the modern Court continues to grapple with the question of whether traditional religious liberty is to be upheld.

Book Montreal City of Spires

Download or read book Montreal City of Spires written by Clarence Epstein and published by PUQ. This book was released on 2012-03-19T00:00:00-04:00 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the fifty religious buildings discussed in this book, only a precious few remain standing despite the fact that Montreal boasts one of the largest and most eclectic groupings of Georgian and Victorian structures of any city in North America.Following the British conquest of New France in 1759 a remarkable series of transformations took place in the small, Catholic trading town of Montreal. Given the diversity of settlers forced to live side by side, the new church buildings that were to rise became strategic public spaces, meeting places as well as power bases. It was no wonder that by the time Mark Twain toured Canada’s first metropolis in the 1880s, he found that one could not throw a brick in the place without breaking a church window.By addressing the social, religious and architectural issues surrounding these colonial-era structures, it will become apparent that Montreal was at once a shining jewel in England’s imperial crown, a chief outpost of Catholicism in the New World, as well as the British North American headquarters for more than a dozen independent congregations.
