Book excerpt: For almost half a century the author dreamed of France, of someday walking the Champs Elysees, and touching the Eiffel Tower. Her book, Paris, Mon Amour, is an account of one perfect week in Paris, where seeing the Mona Lisa in the famed Louvre was possible; and popping into a sidewalk cafe, a daily occurrence! It was intended to be a light-hearted account of that week; but became so much more as she encountered an atmosphere never before experienced. The Parisian way!"

Book excerpt: Le Flaneur, the turn-of-the-century French term for the urban stroller, the street wanderer -- an intellectual with plenty of leisure time to idly traverse the byways of the city, drifting from one quarter to another, making discoveries, meeting old acquaintances, making new ones. It remains the best way to see Paris. This volume of photography is a memoir of numerous walks through the French capital by some great photographers, who set out, like le flaneur, to capture by chance something they had never seen before. These images map and re-map the desired paths and favourite landmarks of one of the most photographed cities in the world, reprinting classic shots from the last two hundred years -- right up to the present day. They poignantly evoke the bars, the cafes, the architecture, the parks and, of course, the vibrancy of the people. Turning the pages is like taking a walk through the history of the city, noting the changes and those elements that are forever Paris -- the tree-lined boulevards, the dimly lit bistros, the narrow passages, and the banks of the River Seine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is art photography? First of all sorry for my english, I am persian !! I have to say this is really a question that is not so easy to answer There are examples of photos that have been made completely without claiming to be art and that are traded as such, Pictures, of which not even the photographer is known. It is very important that the photographer for himself has an idea of Art Photos, and even if he goes with his camera out, hoping for a good photo, but he has a frame operation for his work When I come home with many photos, begins the work, which means I ask myself: Is this an art photo and fit my working frame Operation What are my personal works frames Operation Details, people movement, creativity, conscious action, willing to take random image The question I ask myself is: Could it be that viewers would regret it if they had not seen this or it would not matter to them if they regret it, then the image belongs to my book. It is also since the beginning of the art always a bone of contention what art is. The Answers have unlimited space for interpretations. I think also in terms of art are photos like music and painting! Some like it and others do not! As with the music! What varied and exciting makes the whole thing so well! And always looking for something to watch again! Perhaps art is to produce the conscious application of creative imagination and craft skills to aesthetic objects such as picture or sculpture. 'Conscious' means that a Random product is not art 'Creative' means a copy is not art. 'Craft' means the arts and crafts are complementary. 'Aesthetic' means that the product is beautiful. This definition is probably not for everyone but for me creates clarity Copy a photo, painting or sculpture, is not as copies of writings possible (except, someone wants to copy a Tolstoy book!!) When I write a sentence and millions of other people agree with this statement, for example this sentence: A copy of the hare, (a watercolor by Albrecht Durer) is nice, but only the original is Art This sentence is not a copy, but an image or music or photo can not be copied because it is a person and creativity behind it, From nothing, now by the artist something exists, whether a picture or song or photo. Creativity is really a key word. I remember when I was in Prague and Budapest and wanted pictures of craftsmanship (Glass and wooden toys) make that were behind glass cabinets, first automatically and instinctively you would think on this issue to a polarizing filter, as this reflection on nonmetallic surfaces (so can also suppress on glass). Avoid for reflections on glass panes But I asked myself, why actually with polarizing filter? What's bad about that once viewer sees how a picture would look without polarizing filter? Not only see objects, but also passers-by on the street and the photographer himself, but all in a photo!! And i did it I made these photos without polarizing filter and I believe have become beautiful photos. An artistic work has been deliberately created"

Book New Orleans Mon Amour

  • Author : Andrei Codrescu
  • Publisher : Algonquin Books

Download or read book New Orleans Mon Amour written by Andrei Codrescu and published by Algonquin Books. This book was released on 2004-01-04 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “lovely collection” of essays by the NPR commentator about his beloved adopted city, both before and after Hurricane Katrina (Publishers Weekly). NPR commentator Andrei Codrescu has long written about the unique city he calls home. How apt that a refugee born in Transylvania found his place where vampires roam the streets and voodoo queens live around the corner; where cemeteries are the most popular picnic spots; the ghosts of poets, prostitutes, and pirates are palpable; and in the French Quarter, no one ever sleeps. Codrescu’s essays have been called “satirical gems,” “subversive,” “funny,” “gonzo,” and “wittily poignant”—here is a writer who perfectly mirrors the wild, voluptuous character of New Orleans itself. This retrospective follows him from newcomer to near native: first seduced by the lush banana trees in his backyard and the sensual aroma of coffee at the café down the block, Codrescu soon becomes a Window Gang regular at the infamous bar Molly’s on Decatur; does a stint as King of Krewe de Vieux Carré at Mardi Gras; befriends artists, musicians, and eccentrics; and exposes the city’s underbelly of corruption, warning presciently about the lack of planning for floods in a city high on its own insouciance. Alas, as we all now know, Paradise is lost, but here Codrescu also writes about how the city’s heart still beats even after 2005’s devastating hurricane. New Orleans, Mon Amour is a portrait of an incomparable place, from a writer who “manages to be brilliant and insightful, tough and seductive about American culture” (The New York Times Book Review). “Finely honed portraits of a fabled city and its equally fabled inhabitants. The author, who has called the Big Easy home for two decades, shows how, like some gigantic bohemian magnet, New Orleans attracts some of the world’s most talented, self-indulgent freaks. Codrescu finds himself quite at home there. He expertly weaves pages of New Orleans history through his stories of personal discovery and debauchery. . . . Readers can’t help coming away from reading it without an abiding hope in the ability of ordinary people, under the worst circumstances, rising to whatever challenges they face.” —Publishers Weekly

Book excerpt: The award-winning screenplay for the classic film the New York Post hailed as “overwhelming . . . a motion picture landmark.” One of the most influential works in the history of cinema, Alain Renais’s Hiroshima Mon Amour gathered international acclaim upon its release in 1959 and was awarded the International Critics’ Prize at the Cannes Film festival and the New York Film Critics’ Award. Ostensibly the story of a love affair between a Japanese architect and a French actress visiting Japan to make a film on peace, Hiroshima Mon Amour is a stunning exploration of the influence of war on both Japanese and French culture and the conflict between love and inhumanity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout his career, Henri Matisse used imagery as a means of engaging critically with poetry and prose by a diverse range of authors. Kathryn Brown offers a groundbreaking account of Matisse's position in the literary cross-currents of 20th-century France and explores ways in which reading influenced the artist's work in a range of media. This study argues that the livre d'artiste became the privileged means by which Matisse enfolded literature into his own idiom and demonstrated the centrality of his aesthetic to modernist debates about authorship and creativity. By tracing the compositional and interpretive choices that Matisse made as a painter, print maker, and reader in the field of book production, this study offers a new theoretical account of visual art's capacity to function as a form of literary criticism and extends debates about the gendering of 20th-century bibliophilia. Brown also demonstrates the importance of Matisse's self-placement in relation to the French literary canon in the charged political climate of the Second World War and its aftermath. Through a combination of archival resources, art history, and literary criticism, this study offers a new interpretation of Matisse's artist's books and will be of interest to art historians, literary scholars, and researchers in book history and modernism.

Book Through a Nuclear Lens

Download or read book Through a Nuclear Lens written by Hannah Holtzman and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2024-05-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Franco-Japanese coproduction Hiroshima mon amour (1959) is one of the most important films for global art cinema and for the French New Wave. In Through a Nuclear Lens, Hannah Holtzman examines this film and the transnational cycle it has inspired, as well as its legacy after the 2011 nuclear disaster at Fukushima Daiichi. In a study that includes formal and theoretical analysis, archival research, and interviews, Holtzman shows the emergence of a new kind of nuclear film, one that attends to the everyday effects of nuclear disaster and its impact on our experience of space and time. The focus on Franco-Japanese exchange in cinema since the postwar period reveals a reorientation of the primarily aesthetic preoccupations in the tradition of Japonisme to center around technological and environmental concerns. The book demonstrates how French filmmakers, ever since Hiroshima mon amour, have looked to Japan in part to better understand nuclear uncertainty in France.

Book excerpt: A new work by the author of “In Defense of Witches” that seeks to redefine heterosexual relationships and give women back their voice. As feminist principles have taken wider hold in society, and basic ideas about equality for women can seem a given, many women still struggle in one of the most important areas of life: love. Whether it’s finding a partner, seeking a commitment from one, or struggling in a relationship that is unfulfilling or even potentially abusive, women still find that deeply-engrained notions of gender and behavior can be obstacles to a healthy, loving relationship. In her new book, acclaimed French feminist Mona Chollet tackles some of these long-held and pervasive ideas that remain stumbling blocks for many women in heterosexual relationships. Drawing from popular culture, politics, and literature, Reinventing Love provides a provocative, accessible look at how heterosexual relationships can improve and evolve under a feminist lens.
