Book Who s Laughing Now

Download or read book Who s Laughing Now written by Jenny Sunden and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2020-11-24 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring feminist social media tactics that use humor as a form of resistance to misogyny, the affective dynamics of shame, shaming, and shamelessness. Online sexism, hate, and harassment aim to silence women through shaming and fear. In Who's Laughing Now? Jenny Sundén and Susanna Paasonen examine a somewhat counterintuitive form of resistance: humor. Sundén and Paasonen argue that feminist social media tactics that use humor, laughter, and a sense of the absurd to answer name-calling, offensive language, and unsolicited dick pics can rewire the affective circuits of sexual shame and acts of shaming. Using laughter as both a theme and a methodological tool, Sundén and Paasonen explore examples of the subversive deployment of humor that range from @assholesonline to the Tumblr “Congrats, you have an all-male panel!” They consider the distribution and redistribution of shame, discuss Hannah Gadsby's Nanette, and describe tactical retweeting and commenting (as practiced by Stormy Daniels, among others). They explore the appropriation of terms meant to hurt and insult—for example, self-proclaimed Finnish “tolerance whores”—and what effect this rerouting of labels may have. They are interested not in lulz (amusement at another's expense)—not in what laughter pins down, limits, or suppresses but rather in what grows with and in it. The contagiousness of laughter drives the emergence of networked forms of feminism, bringing people together (although it may also create rifts). Sundén and Paasonen break new ground in exploring the intersection of networked feminism, humor, and affect, arguing for the political necessity of inappropriate laughter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When life is funny, make some jokes about it. Billy Plimpton has a big dream: to become a famous comedian when he grows up. He already knows a lot of jokes, but thinks he has one big problem standing in his way: his stutter. At first, Billy thinks the best way to deal with this is to . . . never say a word. That way, the kids in his new school won’t hear him stammer. But soon he finds out this is NOT the best way to deal with things. (For one thing, it’s very hard to tell a joke without getting a word out.) As Billy makes his way toward the spotlight, a lot of funny things (and some less funny things) happen to him. In the end, the whole school will know -- If you think you can hold Billy Plimpton back, be warned: The joke will soon be on you!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When you're in the trenches, sometimes you're up to your neck in mud. That's the not-so-glamorous life of a pastor's wife. Felicia's family is...complicated. That's putting it nicely. Now they're flying in from LA -- all at once -- to stay with her...just when her brother-in-law, Javier, and Mama aren't even speaking to each other. And the whole church will be there to witness the feud. Mimi has a lot on her mind with her four energetic kids -- especially Milo the screamer, with his Pavarotti voice. Then her live-in alcoholic dad starts to mow their lawn at midnight. Lisa has her hands full with loudmouth Tom Graves and the other troublemakers at Red River Assembly. Then vicious rumors start to fly about the Barton family...and the attacks and threats get increasingly personal. Jennifer is pushing her adopted daughter, Carys, in a stroller, when she notices a black town car -- the same car she's seen several times over the past week. Could someone be following her? The PWs plunge into an unnerving mystery...and discover what "family" really means.

Book The Way of the Lord Plotting St Luke s Itinerary

Download or read book The Way of the Lord Plotting St Luke s Itinerary written by Eugene E. Lemcio and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-03-23 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique work is not a reference tool, but a teaching-learning guide to studying the Gospel According to St. Luke. The focus is on showing how rather than on telling what. Tables followed by leading questions and statements help both faculty and students to see how the evangelist adopted and adapted his sacred texts (as well as Jewish and Greco-Roman resources) in light of his convictions about and experience of Jesus. Noticing the dominance of words, themes, and patterns leads one to discover the primary concerns of the author and his readers. Observing how the Third Evangelist internally arranged his materials provides a clue as to the kind of work it is and how it was meant to function.

Book The King Who Teaches St Matthew s Royal Curriculum

Download or read book The King Who Teaches St Matthew s Royal Curriculum written by Eugene E. Lemcio and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-07-12 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique work is a teaching-learning guide to help instructors and students to determine "What makes Matthew Matthew?" Displays followed by leading questions and statements help one to determine how the Evangelist adopted, adapted, and arranged his sources (both "sacred" and "secular") in light of his convictions about and experience of Jesus. Comparing and contrasting the first Gospel with the other Synoptics (and occasionally with John) also contributes to identifying his concerns. Neither standalone nor comprehensive in its intention, method, or scope, this work of pedagogy is meant to be used (and not simply read) alongside--rather than instead--of standard tools such as introductions and commentaries. Although no knowledge of biblical languages is presupposed, references to Matthew's own use of Greek--and the Greek of his Jewish Scriptures--also enrich this study.

  • Author : Yung Suk Kim

Download or read book How to Read the Gospels written by Yung Suk Kim and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-05-29 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This accessible introduction to the Gospels examines the distinctive messages offered by the texts, giving students a better understanding of methods and interpretations. It explores a close reading of each Gospel and encourages students to approach texts from their own perspectives, from postcolonialism to environmentalism. The discussion questions included will help students focus their reflections on the gospel narrative, its theology, and methods of reading it. How to Read the Gospels is an ideal textbook for undergraduate and seminary classrooms. The book aims to reach seminary and graduate students who study the Gospels critically and comprehensively. It provides user-friendly summaries such as the basics of each Gospel—authorship, history, important parables, etc. —the Jesus of each Gospel, and notable interpretation and translation issues. Without reading the entire story, readers often focus on only specific passages. This book aims to foster close reading of each entire text, sensitizing students to historical and literary issues that commonly arise—and helping them better understand various ways to interpret these formative stories. What makes this book unique is that it also engages various readings of the Gospels from traditional to deconstruction approaches, including womanist interpretation, disability interpretation, ecological interpretation, and many more. For example, how can readers understand the story of Jesus’ surprising conversation with the Samaritan woman in John 4 through the lens of feminism? Or postcolonial criticism? By providing alternative ways to think about these stories and various methods of approaching texts that may be new to the student, the book opens up how such passages can be interpreted and appreciated.
