Download or read book Buckling of Thin Metal Shells written by J.G. Teng and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-06-28 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thin-walled metal shell structures are highly efficient in their use of material, but they are particularly sensitive to failure by buckiling. Many different forms of buckling can occur for different geometries and different loading conditions. Because this field of knowledge is both complex and industrially important, it is of great interest and concern in a wide range of industries. This book presents a compilation and synthesis of a wealth of research, experience and knowledge of the subject. Information that was previously widely scattered throughout the literature is assembled in a concise and convenient form that is easy to understand, and state-of-the-art research findings are thoroughly examined. This book is useful for those involved in the structural design of silos, tanks, pipelines, biodigestors, chimneys, towers, offshore platforms, aircraft and spacecraft. Buckling of Thin Metal Shells is essential reading for designers, researchers and code writers involved with thin-walled metal shell structures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Structural Optimization presents the techniques for a wide set of applications, ranging from the problems of size and shape optimization (historically the first to be studied) to topology and material optimization. Structural models are considered that use both discrete and finite elements. Structural materials can be classical or new. Emerging methods are also addressed, such as automatic differentiation, intelligent structures optimization, integration of structural optimization in concurrent engineering environments, and multidisciplinary optimization. For researchers and designers in industries such as aerospace, automotive, mechanical, civil, nuclear, naval and offshore. A reference book for advanced undergraduate or graduate courses on structural optimization and optimum design.
Download or read book New Results in Numerical and Experimental Fluid Mechanics XI written by Andreas Dillmann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 735 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers contributions to the 20th biannual symposium of the German Aerospace Aerodynamics Association (STAB) and the German Society for Aeronautics and Astronautics (DGLR). The individual chapters reflect ongoing research conducted by the STAB members in the field of numerical and experimental fluid mechanics and aerodynamics, mainly for (but not limited to) aerospace applications, and cover both nationally and EC-funded projects. Special emphasis is given to collaborative research projects conducted by German scientists and engineers from universities, research-establishments and industries. By addressing a number of cutting-edge applications, together with the relevant physical and mathematics fundamentals, the book provides readers with a comprehensive overview of the current research work in the field. Though the book’s primary emphasis is on the aerospace context, it also addresses further important applications, e.g. in ground transportation and energy.

Download or read book Failure Mechanisms in Polymer Matrix Composites written by Paul Robinson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-01-19 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymer matrix composites are increasingly replacing traditional materials, such as metals, for applications in the aerospace, automotive and marine industries. Because of the relatively recent development of these composites there is extensive on-going research to improve the understanding and modelling of their behaviour – particularly their failure processes. As a consequence there is a strong demand among design engineers for the latest information on this behaviour in order to fully exploit the potential of these materials for a wide range of weight-sensitive applications. Failure mechanisms in polymer matrix composites explores the main types of composite failure and examines their implications in specific applications.Part one discusses various failure mechanisms, including a consideration of manufacturing defects and addressing a variety of loading forms such as impact and the implications for structural integrity. This part also reviews testing techniques and modelling methods for predicting potential failure in composites. Part two investigates the effects of polymer-matrix composite failure in a range of industries including aerospace, automotive and other transport, defence, marine and off-shore applications. Recycling issues and environmental factors affecting the use of composite materials are also considered. With its distinguished editors and international team of expert contributors Failure mechanisms in polymer matrix composites is a valuable reference for designers, scientists and research and development managers working in the increasing range of industries in which composite materials are extensively used. The book will also be a useful guide for academics studying in the composites field. - Discusses various failure mechanisms, including manufacturing defects - Reviews testing techniques and modelling methods for predicting potential failure - Investigates failure in aerospace, automotive, defence, marine and off-shore applications

Download or read book Thermal Buckling Analysis for Stiffened Orthotropic Cylindrical Shells written by L. K. Chang and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theory for thermal buckling of an orthotropic, multilayered, stiffened cylindrical shell is presented. The theory includes the effects of eccentricity of layers and stiffening, and deformations prior to buckling. It is sufficiently general to account for discrete rings and averaged properties of longitudinal stiffening, as well as arbitrary temperature distributions through the thickness of the shell and depth of the stiffeners. Two computer programs are described corresponding to solutions for buckling obtained by using finite differences and determinant plotting or modal iteration. Computed results for thermal buckling of unstiffened and ring-stiffened shells are presented and are in reasonable agreement with published results. The interaction of thermal loading and axial compression in two large diameter stiffened shells representative of a launch vehicle interstage and a preliminary supersonic transport fuselage design is investigated. Results indicate that budding can occur in both structures at a realistic temperature under thermal loading alone.
