Book excerpt: A cavalier of the South The author of this book was a trooper in the Confederate cavalry who published his recollections of the Civil War in later life. The 6th Virginia Cavalry, the unit to which he proudly belonged, was formed at Manassas in 1861 and it fought principally as part of the Army of Northern Virginia. Hopkins has structured his book as a chronology of conflicts and the list naturally includes some of the most significant engagements of the war. The 6th Virginia took an active role in Jackson's Valley Campaign at Second Bull Run, Brandy Station, Upperville, Fairfield, Bristow, Mine Run, the Wilderness, Todd's Tavern, Spotsylvania, Haw's Shop, Cold Harbor, Early's campaign in the Shenandoah Valley and the Appomattox Campaign at the close of hostilities. Only three of the regiment actually surrendered with Lee-the remainder cut through Union lines and were later disbanded. This excellent first hand account does not seek to be a regimental history-though much interesting information is given by the author-instead Hopkins has elected to concentrate on those events he witnessed himself and upon the accounts of other reliable writers. This is, of course, an excellent source work for any student of the horse soldiers in grey and will be a valuable addition to any American Civil War library. Sergeant Smith volunteered in the first months of the outbreak of the Civil War, but his first real taste of the conflict came as part of the Army of the Mississippi under General Albert Sidney Johnson at Shiloh. The author recounts the confused nature of the fighting around the Hornet’s Nest and the sorrow of the repulse but above all the deep sense of loss at the death of their Confederate leader. After duties around the outskirts of Vicksburg, Smith and his comrades were among the Confederate soldiers that were penned up there by the Union forces under General Grant. Despite a fierce resistance the Confederate soldiers of Vicksburg were forced to surrender and the troops were paroled. Eventually exchanged, Smith spent the rest of the war in the garrison of Galveston under General Magruder before settling in San Marcos Texas.

Col. Scott was then ordered to begin his advance up the hill toward the enemy's works, which he did through briers, tree tops and obstacles of various kinds... When our line was within ten or fifteen yards of the crest of the mountain, the enemy opened upon us, and a sheet of flame issued from the mountain top, as the Confederates poured a terrific fire of musketry into the faces of our brave boys. The whole line was then pushed forward with vigor, and never flinched or wavered, but advanced with the tread of veterans and returned the fire with telling effect. The fighting was fierce and terrible, a battle to the death, the musketry fire being very rapid. We had one advantage, that as we advanced up the steep mountain, the fire of the enemy passed over our heads, and thus saved our line from being mowed down. Steadily our men advanced, driving their foe from the breastworks of fence rails, logs and stones, that they had hastily thrown up... After about two hours of fighting the Second and Third Virginia, with yells and cheers, loud and strong, charged into the jaws of death and fire, and carried the position by storm, driving the enemy like chaff before the wind, who retreated precipitately toward Lewisburg.
