Book The Conquest of Jerusalem and the Third Crusade

Download or read book The Conquest of Jerusalem and the Third Crusade written by Peter W. Edbury and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a complete collection in modern English of the key texts describing Saladin’s conquest of Jerusalem in October 1187 and the Third Crusade, which was Christendom’s response to the catastrophe. The largest and most important text in the book is a translation of the fullest version of the Old French Continuation of William Tyre for the years 1184-97. This key medieval narrative poses problems for the historian in that it achieved its present form in the 1240s, though it clearly incorporates much earlier material. Professor Edbury's authoritative introduction, notes and maps help interpretation of this and other contemporary texts which are included in this volume, making it an invaluable resource for teachers and students of the crusades.

Book 1099 J rusalem conquise

Download or read book 1099 J rusalem conquise written by Guy Lobrichon and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Jerusalem Pilgrimage 1099 1185

Download or read book Jerusalem Pilgrimage 1099 1185 written by John Wilkinson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem many pilgrims came to Jerusalem. The translations in this book are of seventeen western accounts of pilgrimage, written between 1099 and 1185, and there are two additional accounts from eastern pilgrims, Abbot Daniel from Russia and John Phocas from Antioch. As a whole this collection shows the gradually developing way in which western Christians understood the Holy Places. Some early pilgrims depended on authorities, many of whom by 1099 were out-of-date. They tried to deliver the truth about the Holy Places and to be reticent about their own reactions. But the pilgrims who appear later in the collections made their own archaeological judgements, and were more free about their own reactions. Pilgrimage after 1099 was altered by the fact that by their victory over Jerusalem the Dome of the Rock fell into the Crusader's hands. Otherwise the differences of practice between eastern and western pilgrims were slight. Thus eastern pilgrims visited the Greek and western pilgrims the Latin monasteries. Western pilgrims had a different idea of the location of Emmaus, and before 1185 a western Way of the Cross was beginning to take shape. These were slight differences, and in general all Christian pilgrims, whether from east or west, visited the same Holy Places as they had during the preceding period. Most of the works in this collection were translated into English a century ago by the Palestine Pilgrim's Text Society. But these texts were produced separately as pamphlets, and lacked a general introduction. In this book therefore the texts are retranslated, sometimes from more accurate texts. In introducing the texts some valuable new evidence from archaeology has been used and enabled a new assessment of their dates.

Book Gateway to the Heavenly City

Download or read book Gateway to the Heavenly City written by Sylvia Schein and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gateway to the Heavenly City presents a penetrating analysis of the attitudes of Latin Christendom towards Jerusalem in the period from the First Crusade to the Muslim capture of the city in 1187. Sylvia Schein starts by exploring the changes in the Western image of Jerusalem, first as the goal of the crusade, then after its conquest. She examines the theories used to justify the conquest and rule of the Holy City and the attitudes of the papacy towards this new rival centre of sanctity. Subsequent chapters describe the new character of Jerusalem's sanctity as the city of the Old and New Testaments, as the earthly gateway to the heavenly city, and in apocalyptic terms as the centre of the world and the place where the events of the end of the world would unroll. The reaction to the fall of crusader Jerusalem in 1187 is the subject of the final chapter. Based on a detailed examination of the source materials, from poetry and song to chronicles and charters, this book paints a clear picture of the place of the Earthly and the Heavenly Jerusalem in Latin Christendom.

Book The Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem

Download or read book The Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem written by C. R. Conder and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem: 1099 to 1291 A. D The sources on which we depend for history of the time of the great Crusades, and which have been used by Gibbon and Michaud, are well known and accessible. They include the Chronicles of Foucher of Chartres, who accompanied Robert of Normandy (1095 - 1124 A.D.), and of Raymond d'Agiles, who was also present at the conquest of Antioch, with that of Albert of Aix, and the great history of William, Archbishop of Tyre, which was begun in 1182 and closes in 1184. These I have read in the great collection of Bongar's Gesta Dei Per Francos (Handover, 1611), which also includes the important description of later events by Jacques de Vitry, Bishop of Acre, written about 1220 A.D. The Moslem accounts include Boha ed Din's life of his master Saladin about 1200 A.D., and the later works of Kemal ed Din, Mejr ed Din, Abu el Feda, and Makrizi, with El Edrizi's geography about 1150 A.D. Book Crusaders and Franks

  • Author : Benjamin Z. Kedar
  • Publisher : Routledge

Download or read book Crusaders and Franks written by Benjamin Z. Kedar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-30 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While research on the crusades tends increasingly to bifurcate into study of the crusade idea and the crusading expeditions, and study of the Frankish states the crusaders established in the Levant, Benjamin Kedar confirms-through the articles reproduced in this latest selection of his articles-his adherence to the school that endeavours to deal with both branches of research. Of the ten studies that deal with the crusading expeditions, one examines the maps that might have been available to the First Crusaders and their Muslim opponents, another discusses in detail the Jerusalem massacre of July 1099 and its place in Western historiography down to our days, a third sheds light on the largely neglected doings of the Fourth Crusaders who decided to sail to Acre rather than to Constantinople, while a fourth exposes unknown features of the well-known sculpture of the returning crusader-most probably Count Hugh I of Vaudémont- who is embracing his wife. Of the ten studies that deal with the Frankish Levant, one proposes a hypothesis on the composition stages of William of Tyre's chronicle, another provides new evidence on the Latin hermits who chose to live in the Frankish states, a third examines the catalogue of the library of the cathedral of Nazareth, while a fourth calls attention to convergences of Eastern Christians, Muslims and Franks in sacred spaces and offers a typology of such events, and a fifth proposes a methodology for the identification of trans-cultural borrowing in the Frankish Levant.

Book The Archaeology of Jerusalem

Download or read book The Archaeology of Jerusalem written by Katharina Galor and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-28 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this sweeping and lavishly illustrated history, Katharina Galor and Hanswulf Bloedhorn survey nearly four thousand years of human settlement and building activity in Jerusalem, from prehistoric times through the Ottoman period. The study is structured chronologically, exploring the city’s material culture, including fortifications and water systems as well as key sacred, civic, and domestic architecture. Distinctive finds such as paintings, mosaics, pottery, and coins highlight each period. Their book provides a unique perspective on the emergence and development of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, and the relationship among the three religions and their cultures into the modern period.
