Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book #2 in the Tom Swift 100th Anniversary Project. Now satisfied that his motor cycle is running at its peak, Tom decides he absolutely must have a speedy motorboat of his own. His rival, Andy Foger-constantly jealous of Tom-has his father buy him a boat in hopes of beating Tom in any race. But Tom has other ideas and works hard to upgrade both the boat and its motor. The same criminal gang from Tom Swift and His Motor Cycle is still hanging around Shopton. And, they are still giving Tom troubles, including trying to steal his new boat. A race won and now taking his father on a cruise of the lake, Tom rescues a balloonist whose flaming balloon is about to crash, something that would kill the man who will become an important part of Tom's inventing life in future stories. -------------------------------------------- This book has been substantially rewritten to remove outright racism and to enhance the mechanical and technical interests. Many books of this era used sentence structures, certain words and even punctuation in ways that can be confusing to younger readers today. So, every effort has been made to alleviate this issue while retaining the flavor of a story first told more than a century before.

Book Then Sings My Soul

    Book Details:
  • Author : Douglas Harrison
  • Publisher : University of Illinois Press
  • Release : 2012-05-15
  • ISBN : 0252094093
  • Pages : 250 pages

Download or read book Then Sings My Soul written by Douglas Harrison and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2012-05-15 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this ambitious book on southern gospel music, Douglas Harrison reexamines the music's historical emergence and its function as a modern cultural phenomenon. Rather than a single rhetoric focusing on the afterlife as compensation for worldly sacrifice, Harrison presents southern gospel as a network of interconnected messages that evangelical Christians use to make individual sense of both Protestant theological doctrines and their own lived experiences. Harrison explores how listeners and consumers of southern gospel integrate its lyrics and music into their own religious experience, building up individual--and potentially subversive--meanings beneath a surface of evangelical consensus. Reassessing the contributions of such figures as Aldine Kieffer, James D. Vaughan, and Bill and Gloria Gaither, Then Sings My Soul traces an alternative history of southern gospel in the twentieth century, one that emphasizes the music's interaction with broader shifts in American life beyond the narrow confines of southern gospel's borders. His discussion includes the "gay-gospel paradox"--the experience of non-heterosexuals in gospel music--as a cipher for fundamentalism's conflict with the postmodern world.

  • Pages : 128 pages

Download or read book Elizabethtown written by Jean-Paul Benowitz and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Settled in 1708 and incorporated as a borough in 1827, Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, is located five miles from the Susquehanna River in Lancaster County, 20 miles from both the county seat Lancaster City, to the east, and Harrisburg, the state capital, to the west. With its Old Peter's Road, Elizabethtown played an important role in the westward expansion of the nation during the 18th and 19th centuries. Construction on the first railroad began in 1834, and Elizabethtown remains a strategic stop on the Amtrak Keystone line between Harrisburg and Philadelphia. Along with its proximity to Hershey, Pennsylvania, Elizabethtown has been home to a Mars, Inc., confectionery plant since 1970 (formerly Klein's Chocolate Company, incorporated in 1914). Elizabethtown College was founded in 1899, and the Masonic Village followed in 1910. The Pennsylvania State Hospital for Crippled Children opened in 1929, later becoming the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections Training Academy in 1991.
