Book 100 Questions After the Killing of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor

Download or read book 100 Questions After the Killing of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor written by Peter Thalheim and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-02-22 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These 100 Questions grew out of an assignment to me by the president of the Stamford, Connecticut, chapter of the NAACP, within one month of the killing of George Floyd, an African-American man on May 25, 2020, on "how can white ppl help [end] systemic racism?" My answer was: "Easily. It takes more than two pages however." Here is my presentation to "white ppl" to help end systemic racism/statism, the hurdles, burdens and barriers put in the way of the citizen to get an education, get a job, start a business, put a roof over their head, put food on the plate of their children and pursue happiness as they see fit. The Chicago Tragedy is shorthand for our nation's silence on the daily violent death of young black men, boys and bystanders countrywide. For example, in 2016 there were 762 murders reported in Chicago alone, which worked out to more than 2 people killed per day, which fell most heavily on young black men, boys and bystanders!

Download or read book Praying with Every Heart written by Cláudio Carvalhaes and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-08-26 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops an understanding of prayer from a liberation-theological perspective. "Praying with" offers a distinctive way of praying that can help orient our prayers around the "where" we pray and "with whom" we pray as the locus of the body's and heart's theological praxis. The book helps create language to pray with people and in situations we are not used to praying with; it insists on praying amidst racism, poverty, violence, and suffering; it calls us to pray at night and at the end of the world when we are overcome by fear, hurt, climate disaster, or economic impoverishment; it ventures into interfaith prayer settings; and it claims a sense of "self" that is not discrete, encapsulated in its own thinking or feeling--rather, it understands the notion of the self as entangled with the whole earth and each sentient and nonsentient being. Thus, to "pray with" in this book is to take the location of one's prayer more seriously and, individually and collectively, to gain an awareness of our grounding and positionality, therefore creating a theological structure that assumes both the listening of our own heart and the voices of everything around us.

Book Catholic Women s Rhetoric in the United States

Download or read book Catholic Women s Rhetoric in the United States written by Christina R. Pinkston and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-01-28 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on various feminist theories of ethos, the authors in this collection explore how North American Catholic women from various periods, races, ethnicities, sexualities, and classes have used elements of the group’s positionality to make change. The women considered in the book range from the earliest Catholic sisters who arrived in the United States to women who held the Church hierarchy accountable for the sexual abuse scandals. The book analyzes women such as those in an African American order who developed an ethos that would resist racism. Chapters also consider better known Catholic women such as Dolores Huertas, Mary Daly, and Joan Chittister.

Book excerpt: A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.

Book excerpt: In this important book, a megachurch pastor acknowledges the mental health crisis happening in our churches today and gives readers practical tools to fight back against depression, anxiety, and insecurity—and help them find victory. Depression, anxiety, and emotional trauma are on the rise, even more so after the painful few years we’ve all been through. While the church has had an unfortunate track record of glossing over mental health issues, Paul Daugherty, pastor of the megachurch Victory, believes it’s time for the church to break its silence. You can’t just pray trauma away. Depression and anxiety can affect even the most devoted believer. In this book, Paul Daugherty walks readers through some of the biggest mental and emotional health issues he has seen people in his life and his congregation facing, including depression, anxiety, insecurity, mood swings, and the scars of trauma. Daugherty dives into scripture and lays a framework for understanding the spiritual truths behind each mental battle. He also offers practical tips and strategies to help readers find lasting victory. The result is an invaluable handbook that will help Christians and non-believers alike.
