Book Ethical Challenges in Cancer Diagnosis and Therapy

Download or read book Ethical Challenges in Cancer Diagnosis and Therapy written by Axel W. Bauer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-21 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents in detail the problems and ethical challenges in daily oncological practice. In western industrialized countries, roughly 25 percent of all citizens still die from cancer. Despite significant progress in basic science and in individual areas of clinical care, even in the 21st century, being diagnosed with cancer has lost none of its dread and can still be a death sentence. This situation raises many problems and challenges for medical ethics, e.g., the question of the benefits and risks of prevention programs, or the right to know and not to know. Clinical trials with cancer patients and quality assurance for surgery, radiotherapy and medication also pose a series of ethical dilemmas. Furthermore, cancer treatment is a psychological challenge not only for patients but also for physicians and caregivers. The issues of adequate pain management and good palliative care, of treatment limiting and the question of assisted suicide at the end of life also have to be considered. In order to reflect the subject’s diverse and multifaceted nature, the book incorporates legal, ethnographic, historical and literary perspectives into ethical considerations.

Book The History of Cancer and Emotions in Twentieth Century Germany

Download or read book The History of Cancer and Emotions in Twentieth Century Germany written by Bettina Hitzer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-06-30 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Different people feel different emotions when they are diagnosed with cancer. Both today and a century ago, fear and hope, shame and disgust, sadness and joy are and were the emotions experienced by many cancer patients and their loved ones. But these emotions do not just have significance for the people who feel them. They have also exerted a surprisingly profound influence on how hospitals and laboratories dealt with cancer, how early detection campaigns portrayed it, and how doctors talked about it with their patients. Bettina Hitzer details the history of cancer and emotions in twentieth-century Germany and thus follows the cancer-associated transformations of emotional regimes, emotional politics, and emotional experiences through five different political systems. In doing so, the study underscores that political caesuras resonate in the immediate corporeality of the history of emotions.

The majority of them deals with the development of medicine and life sciences as well as the national research promotion under the Nazi regime and during World War II. Studies on human experiments of French, Japanese, and US-American research enlarge the perspective on a problem of obviously international range. These empirical studies are supplemented by articles on the legal evaluation of this behaviour of scientists, as well as on the resulting movement to formulate binding transnational ethical codes on behalf of human experiments.

Book Breast Cancer Diagnostic Imaging and Therapeutic Guidance

Download or read book Breast Cancer Diagnostic Imaging and Therapeutic Guidance written by Uwe Fischer and published by Thieme. This book was released on 2017-12-13 with total page 679 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breast Cancer: Diagnostic Imaging and Therapeutic Guidance provides a concise, practical, and practice-based source of up-to-date diagnostic and therapeutic information for the general radiologist. In the diagnostic phase of evaluating breast disorders, the overriding consideration in the examination and assessment is to reduce false diagnoses to the absolute minimum-a principle wholly in the interests of the patient. The particular diagnostic pathway chosen will depend on the highly variable individual presentations and the associated findings. A major focus of the book is the comparative value of the various diagnostic imaging modalities. As well as discussing conventional mammography and adjunct modalities such as breast ultrasound and galactography, the text also showcases the superior utility of contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging in providing the highest rate of detection of cancers at any stage. As well as radiological diagnosis, sections written by top specialists cover the interventional procedures for obtaining biopsies and also the surgical and medical therapy of breast carcinoma. Key Features: Combined authors' experience of more than 100 years provides this work with great depth and expertise. Richly illustrated with almost 600 images, including full color histology, patient photographs, and hundreds of radiological studies. BI-RADS classification for mammography, breast ultrasound, and breast MRI. Adjunct topics covered include screening and staging; lymph nodes; breast reconstruction; chemotherapy, also with respect to endocrine-active tumors; radiation therapy; tumors of the male breast; logistics in the breast care center; and psychosocial care. Breast Cancer: Diagnostic Imaging and Therapeutic Guidance is certain to prove an invaluable tool for all general radiologists involved in the evaluation and treatment of patients with breast cancer.

Download or read book Doing Medicine Together written by Susan Gross Solomon and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyzes aspects of the German-Russian collaboration often overlooked by students of cross-national science, including the choice of 'friends' across borders, the activities of scientific entrepreneurs, the tensions between bi-lateral and international science, and the migration of scientists.. - Of the many interwar connections between Germany and Russia, one of the most unusual - and least explored - is medicine and public health. Between 1922 and 1932, with high-level political support and government funding, Soviet and German physicians and public health specialists collaborated in joint research expeditions, published joint articles, launched a bi-lingual journal, and established joint research institutions. Surprisingly, students of Soviet-German relations have all but ignored this medical collaboration; while historians of science have treated it as political history, an exercise in cultural diplomacy designed to mitigate the impact of the post-war exclusion of both nations from the international science. The contributors to this volume, who come from Germany, Russia, Britain, the United States and Canada, depart from the traditional approach to the subject. Drawing on previously inaccessible archival materials, the authors move beyond politics to examine the impact of this collaboration on scientific activity

Book Gastrointestinal Eponymic Signs

Download or read book Gastrointestinal Eponymic Signs written by Steven H. Yale and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024-02-17 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a novel method to teach eponymically named physical signs of the alimentary tract and intrabdominal organs. The focus is on the historical aspect of the named signs, how to perform the sign described by the author, and the pathophysiologic mechanisms involved in eliciting a positive test. The goal is to guide the reader to appreciate how these bedside signs provide a more profound understanding of the mechanism of disease. By doing so, they become more than simply rote memorization but an appreciation of how a direct hands-on assessment involving observing, engaging, listening, and touching the patient assists in diagnosis. Hence, these techniques provided the additional benefit of better connecting the practitioner to the patients and maintaining the art of medicine, which is rapidly losing its foothold within the medical community. This book will serve as a teaching tool for learners, teachers, and practicing physicians to preserve the art of the physical examination using a form of a case-based teaching and learning style approach. Illustrations throughout the text provide a visual representation of how to perform the sign. The authors believe this method of teaching and learning is more meaningful to the student in that they will be able to associate the name with the person's historical features, the sign, and its pathophysiologic mechanism(s). Gastrointestinal Eponymic Signs is a must-have resource for medical students, residents, fellows, teaching faculty, and any practicing physician seeking to understand how physical examination signs assist in diagnosis.
