Book excerpt: Dear Cherry 1 whole year since I moved! Can you believe it? I still remember everything about you and I look at your photo every day. I know our pact has ended but I love writing to you Cherry so I think we should continue with it and see how long we can go! It's so weird to think I've been in Norwich a whole year and this time last year I'd never met Alfred, never met Zara or Susie or Annie. But it's just... so much has happened and... I can't wait to find out what happens next. For both of us, so I'm going to continue, even though the promise is over, and I hope you will too. Sooooooooooo much love, Kittyxx

Book excerpt: An irresistible feline-themed selection of letters from the curator of the globally popular Letters of Note website. The first volume in the bestselling Letters of Note series was a collection of hundreds of the world's most entertaining, inspiring, and unusual letters, based on the seismically popular website of the same name--an online museum of correspondence visited by over 70 million people. From Virginia Woolf's heartbreaking suicide letter, to Queen Elizabeth II's recipe for drop scones sent to President Eisenhower; from the first recorded use of the expression 'OMG' in a letter to Winston Churchill, to Gandhi's appeal for calm to Hitler; and from Iggy Pop's beautiful letter of advice to a troubled young fan, to Leonardo da Vinci's remarkable job application letter. Now, the curator of Letters of Note, Shaun Usher, gives us wonderful new volumes featuring letters organized around a universal theme. In this volume, Shaun Usher turns to the cat--a subject of fascination, amusement, reverence, and joy. Even before they reigned supreme on the internet, their idiosyncratic ways and hold on our affections had long been written about in many forms. Letters of Note: collects together the most engaging missives that celebrate eulogize, rail against and analyze the ways of our feline companions. Includes letters by Nikola Tesla, Rachel Carson, Anne Frank, John Cheever, and many more.

Book Encounter and Interventions

Download or read book Encounter and Interventions written by Sajal Nag and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-07 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of colonialism and its associated developments has been characterized as one of the most defining moments in the history of South Asia. The arrival of Christian missionaries has not only been coeval to colonial rule, but also associated with development in the region. Their encounter, critique, endeavour and intervention have been very critical in shaping South Asian society and culture, even where they did not succeed in converting people. Yet, there is precious little space spared for studying the role and impact of missionary enterprises than the space allotted to colonialism. Isolated individual efforts have focused on Bengal, Madras, Punjab and much remains to be addressed in the context of the unique region of the North East India. In North East India, for example, by the time the British left, a majority of the tribals had abandoned their own faith and adopted Christianity. It was a socio-cultural revolution. Yet, this aspect has remained outside the scope of history books. Whatever reading material is available is pro-Christian, mainly because they are either sponsored by the church authorities or written by ecclesiastical scholars. Very little secular research was conducted for the hundred years of missionary endeavour in the region. The interpretations, which have emerged out of the little material available, are largely simplistic and devoid of nuances. This book is an effort to decenter such explanations by providing an informed historical and cultural appreciation of the role and contribution of missionary endeavors in British India.

Book Guess What Happened to Me Auntie Kate

Download or read book Guess What Happened to Me Auntie Kate written by Lynne Arden and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2008-09 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LYNNE ARDEN moved with her family to the Pacific Northwest as a young girl living very close to Puget Sound near Seattle, Washington. She graduated from the local high school, attended the University of Washington and took a children s literary course later on in her life. To The Young Reader Alex Kinkaid is a seven year old boy who lives in Washington State by a large body of water called Puget Sound. He likes to write to his Auntie Kate about his adventures with Jerry, his cocker spaniel, Jimmy, his friend and that nasty Jack Turner. He tries real hard to please his teacher, Miss Hawthorne, but he accidentally gets into some trouble along the way. Guess What Happened to Me, Auntie Kate will delight young children with its comical characters. Young Alex is always getting into scrapes and somehow finding ways to get out of them. From accidentally letting spiders get loose in his classroom, to a disastrous result in the kitchen making jam, Alex sure leads an adventurous life. Some of Alex s adventures were based on the author s own experiences. There actually was a sea lion that broke the windshield of a moored speed boat near Point Pulley. Point Pulley is an actual landmark on Puget Sound. Fishing for sole with nothing more than string, a weight and worms and a harrowing blizzard that hit the Puget Sound area in the Winter of 1950 were also experiences of the author. Along with the humor in these short vignettes, there is an underlying moral message in most of these stories of fair play, being kind to others, (well, most of the time), and trying really hard to be a good kid. NATALIE MARINO is an award wining fine artist who has exhibited widely and has illustrated several children s storybooks. She lives and works in her NJ studio. Email: [email protected]."

Book Philip Larkin Letters Home

Download or read book Philip Larkin Letters Home written by Philip Larkin and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 671 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Letters Home gives access to the last major archive of Larkin's writing to remain unpublished: the letters to members of his family. These correspondences help tell the story of how Larkin came to be the writer and the man he was: to his father Sydney, a 'conservative anarchist' and admirer of Hitler, who died relatively early in Larkin's life; to his timid depressive mother Eva, who by contrast, lived long, and whose final years were shadowed by dementia; and to his sister Kitty, the sparse surviving fragment of whose correspondence with her brother gives an enigmatic glimpse of a complex and intimate relationship- But it was the years during which he and his sister looked after their mother in particular that shaped the writer we know so well: a number of poems written over this time are for her, and the mood of pain, shadow and despondency that characterises his later verse draws its strength from his experience of the long, lonely years of her senility. One surprising element in the volume, however, is the joie de vivre shown in the large number of witty and engaging drawings of himself and Eva, as 'Young Creature' and 'Old Creature', with which he enlivens his letters throughout the three decades of her widowhood. This important edition, meticulously edited by Larkin's biographer, James Booth, is a key piece of scholarship that completes the portrait of this most cherished of English poets.

Book Early Journals and Letters of Fanny Burney Volume 4

Download or read book Early Journals and Letters of Fanny Burney Volume 4 written by Frances Burney and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2003-05-21 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume IV of The Early Journals and Letters of Fanny Burney, covering the years 1780-1781, will be of particular interest to students of Burney as it marks the young author's introduction into the world following the astonishing success of her novel Evelina (1778) and includes her visits to Streatham and her encounters with Hester and Henry Thrale and Dr Johnson. It was an exciting period in her life, which she managed to enjoy despite struggling to repeat her first success while avoiding the often unwelcome attention it brought. But it was also a difficult period in her family life as she dealt with jealous interference by her stepmother, the courtship of her sister Susan by a man she considered untrustworthy, and the misbehaviour of her brothers. Burney's enthusiasm makes the most of her experiences and she describes characters and scenes with all the genius displayed in her novels. Her descriptions contain the four great attributes that distinguish her novels: brilliant handling of detail, total and full recall of conversations characteristic of the speaker, sensibility and empathy for others, and great relish for the ridiculous wherever it occurred.
