Download or read book Remarkable Record of Job written by Henry Morris and published by New Leaf Publishing Group. This book was released on 2000-02 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Far from a myth or fable, the majestic Book of Job stands forever as a genuine historical account of a man assaulted by the accuser, Satan, and redeemed by a loving God. The author asserts further that Job's ancient account (possibly the oldest book in the Bible, apart from Genesis) is scientifically reliable, touching on aspects of nature that prove man's early knowledge of the universe was more highly sophisticated than many believe today. While this commentary emphasizes that we are not told in the Book of Job why humans suffer, there is sufficient evidence to help us understand that God is indeed interested in us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Comforting Whirlwind, acclaimed environmentalist and writer Bill McKibben turns to the biblical book of Job and its awesome depiction of creation to demonstrate our need to embrace a bold new paradigm for living if we hope to reverse the current trend of ecological destruction. With reference to the consequences of our poorly considered and self-centered environmental practices—global warming, ozone degradation, deforestation—McKibben combines modern science and timeless biblical wisdom to make the case that growth and economic progress are not only undesirable but deadly. If we continue to accelerate the pace of development, we will inevitably complete the “decreation” of our planet and everything on it, including ourselves. In his signature lyrical prose, and using Stephen Mitchell’s powerful translation of Job, McKibben calls readers to truly appreciate both the majesty of creation and humanity’s rightful—and responsible—place in it.

Book Creating Good Jobs

Download or read book Creating Good Jobs written by Paul Osterman and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2020-01-28 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experts discuss improving job quality in low-wage industries including retail, residential construction, hospitals and long-term healthcare, restaurants, manufacturing, and long-haul trucking. Americans work harder and longer than our counterparts in other industrialized nations. Yet prosperity remains elusive to many. Workers in such low-wage industries as retail, restaurants, and home construction live from paycheck to paycheck, juggling multiple jobs with variable schedules, few benefits, and limited prospects for advancement. These bad outcomes are produced by a range of industry-specific factors, including intense competition, outsourcing and subcontracting, failure to enforce employment standards, overt discrimination, outmoded production and management systems, and inadequate worker voice. In this volume, experts look for ways to improve job quality in the low-wage sector. They offer in-depth examinations of specific industries—long-term healthcare, hospitals and outpatient care, retail, residential construction, restaurants, manufacturing, and long-haul trucking—that together account for more than half of all low-wage jobs. The book's sector view allows the contributors to address industry-specific variations that shape operational choices about work. Drawing on deep industry knowledge, they consider important distinctions within and between these industries; the financial, institutional, and structural incentives that shape the choices employers make; and what it would take to make more jobs better jobs. Contributors Eileen Appelbaum, Rosemary Batt, Dale Belman, Julie Brockman, Françoise Carré, Susan Helper, Matt Hinkel, Tashlin Lakhani, JaeEun Lee, Raphael Martins, Russell Ormiston, Paul Osterman, Can Ouyang, Chris Tilly, Steve Viscelli

This book was released on 1997-04-01 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents theory and evidence on the asymmetric effects of monetary policy on job creation and job destruction. First, it solves a dynamic matching model and it shows how interest rate changes result in an asymmetric response of job creation and destruction. Second, it looks at how changes in the federal fund rate affect gross job flows in the U.S. manufacturing industry, and it finds evidence of asymmetry. Tight policy increases job destruction and reduces net employment changes. Conversely, easy policy appears ineffective in stimulating job creation.
