Book excerpt: The 05R Monte Carlo code (See ORNL-3622, NASA N65-17892) was adapted to calculate fast-neutron doses within and outside of concrete slab shields. Such calculations were performed for a variety of shield thicknesses (0 to 180 cm) and for various monoenergetic sources from 0.7 to 14 MeV. The concrete chosen is ordinary concrete with approximately 6% water content. Results are plotted as tissue kerma versus penetration distance for each source energy. The source is in each case a broad normally incident beam. (Author).

Book excerpt: Monte Carlo calculations were carried out in great detail on the reflection properties of concrete for fast neutrons. The results are presented for the differential angular dose albedo for various incident-beam conditions and touches upon some of the other distributions calculated. The following formula represents the calculated differential angular dose albedo to better than 10% for about 95% of the values obtained and can be used to extend the results to the entire hemispherical range for both incident and reflected neutron velocity vectors. A comparison of the fast-neutron angular dose albedo calculations weighted by an incident spectrum previously measured at the Tower Shielding Facility with the results of a series of dose albedo measurements performed at the TSF shows a root mean square deviation from 147 combinations of the incident and reflected angles of 3.1%, with the largest single deviation being 9%. This excellent agreement shows that existing cross sections are adequate to calculate differential albedos to a high precision.

Book excerpt: Measurements of the fast neutron angular flux spectrum in CH2 have been made in point-source, cylindrical geometry, using the same time-of-flight method previously applied to spherical and infinite medium geometries. This work is a continuation of the comparison of accurate, detailed, high-resolution measurements with DTF-IV discrete-ordinate and O5R Monte Carlo calculations. The sphere experiment was reanalyzed with a P16 Gauss-Legendre quadrature set in DTF-IV using the best available evaluated cross sections and P3 scattering. Reasonably good agreement was found except near 0 deg. where the discrete-ordinate code fails to calculate the very anisotropic flux. 05R calculations were made with a more complete description of the spectrum and angular distribution of the source neutrons, and included the continuum inelastic scattering, using new source generator and general inelastic scattering subroutines written for this research. Differences were small. An angular flux cylinder analysis program was written for 05R and unbiased calculations were made for the cylinder. Variance-reduction schemes are needed, however, for a meaningful comparison with the cylinder measurements. The DTF-IV code (1DF version) was put into operation on the Kirtland CDC6600 computer and the report includes input instructions. (Author).
