Book excerpt: Volume 40 of Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry compiles and synthesizes current information on sulfate minerals from a variety of perspectives, including crystallography, geochemical properties, geological environments of formation, thermodynamic stability relations, kinetics of formation and dissolution, and environmental aspects. The first two chapters cover crystallography (Chapter 1) and spectroscopy (Chapter 2). Environments with alkali and alkaline earth sulfates are described in the next three chapters, on evaporites (Chapter 3), barite-celestine deposits (Chapter 4), and the kinetics of precipitation and dissolution of gypsum, barite, and celestine (Chapter 5). Acidic environments are the theme for the next four chapters, which cover soluble metal salts from sulfide oxidation (Chapter 6), iron and aluminum hydroxysulfates (Chapter 7), jarosites in hydrometallugy (Chapter 8), and alunite-jarosite crystallography, thermodynamics, and geochronology (Chapter 9). The next two chapters discuss thermodynamic modeling of sulfate systems from the perspectives of predicting sulfate-mineral solubilities in waters covering a wide range in composition and concentration (Chapter 10) and predicting interactions between sulfate solid solutions and aqueous solutions (Chapter 11). The concluding chapter on stable-isotope systematics (Chapter 12) discusses the utility of sulfate minerals in understanding the geological and geochemical processes in both high- and low-temperature environments, and in unraveling the past evolution of natural systems through paleoclimate studies. The review chapters in this volume were the basis for a short course on sulfate minerals sponsored by the Mineralogical Society of America (MSA) November 11-12, 2000 in Tahoe City, California, prior to the Annual Meeting of MSA, the Geological Society of America, and other associated societies in nearby Reno, Nevada. The conveners of the course (and editors of this volume of Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry), Alpers, John Jambor, and Kirk Nordstrom, also organized related topical sessions at the GSA meeting on sulfate minerals in both hydrothermal and low-temperature environments.

Both districts lie on faulted structural uplifts within the covered shield area of the Central States. Complex fault lineaments intersect in each district and are major structural controls. Two fault zones, the Ste. Genevieve and Cottage Grove, form connecting links between districts. The iron deposits of southeast Missouri are in rocks of Precambrian age; but the lead, zinc, barite, copper, cobalt, and pyrite deposits of southeast Missouri, and the fluorite, zinc, barite, lead deposits of Illinois-Kentucky, are all in the domed and faulted thin cover of Paleozoic rocks.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Barite Deposits of Missouri and the Geology of the Barite District: A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of the Ogden Graduate School of Science, in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Department of Geology Sulphate of Barytes (heavy Spar) - Mine a Burton (potosi), Old Mines, Mine Shibboleth, and numerous other mines in Washington County, Missouri are characterized by sul fate of barytes. In those mines it forms the matrix of the lead ore; though it is sometimes found unaccompanied by ores of any kind, and the quantity which is found at Potosi alone is suffi cient, according to our present ideas of its uses, for the supply of the whole world. It is generally found in compact or tabu lar masses, very white, heavy, and glistening. Sometimes it is crested, columnar, prismatic, or lamellar and frequently the sur face of the crystals are yellow, from an ochery oxide of iron. All the barytes I have observed in Missouri are perfectly opaque. Schoolcraft suggests on page 101 that the barite might be used as a flux. Litton1 in his report on the lead mines of south eastern Missouri mentions the minerals of the following metals as being the only ones that were important: Pb, Fe, Cu, Ni, Co, Zn, and Mn. Apparently the mining of barite had not yet begun at that time. Broadhead2 in a report on Miller County mentions the find ing of barite crystals, and also comments on the use of barite as a pigment, but does not indicate that he was aware of its being mined for that purpose in Missouri. In a later report3 Broad head mentions in considerable detail the use of barite in paints, but fails to state definitely that it was being mined in Missouri. In brief, it meets a need that I, an explorationist, perceived as I became involved in a multidisciplinary explo ration program in the late 1960s. We were looking for mines while prospecting at the ore-field scale. The practicalities demand that we know more about the ore field and that we do not just study individual deposits, the analogy being the three blind men who attempted to describe the elephant as they felt the trunk, ear, or leg. Two considerations in identifying ore fields are the different perception as one changes scale from orebody to ore field and the problem of stratigraphic classification and nomenclature in terms appropriate to metallogenesis. Two workers, Brock (1972) and Carey (1976), have been particularly con cerned with the different appreciation brought about by a change in scale.
