Book excerpt: Originally published in 1993 and now available for the first time in paperback, this book remains one of the few authoritative vegetation compilations for a western state. It is the first comprehensive study of the biological history and evolution of New Mexico's vegetation and includes a detailed account of the distribution of plant communities in the state today. Discussed are the following major types of vegetation: tundra and coniferous forest, woodland and savanna, grassland, scrubland, riparian, and wetlands. For each type, information is provided on the principal plant species. In addition, for each vegetation type special attention is given to describing how plants sharing a common location interact and, in particular, how human activity impacts on each type. Much of New Mexico's vegetation is in some stage of succession as a result of human-initiated disturbances such as fire, logging, and livestock grazing. The book ends with a detailed description of species of special concern and what is being done to preserve examples of vegetation types within the state. A map of the state's vegetation, including types not found on existing maps, accompanies the book. The classifications of vegetation employed here are easily recognizable in the field, which makes them of greater use to the public as well as to resource managers, researchers, and students.

Book Ecology of Halophytes

  • Author : Robert J. Mold
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 2012-12-02

Download or read book Ecology of Halophytes written by Robert J. Mold and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecology of Halophytes documents the proceedings of a symposium on the ecology of halophytes sponsored by the Physiological Ecology section of the Ecological Society of America, and held as a portion of the American Institute of Biological Sciences meetings in August 1972. The book considers the fundamentals of distribution, anatomy, and physiology of halophytes. It provides an overview of the role of the halophyte in ecosystems in various parts of the world. A section on habitat associations of halophytes considers the relation of the plants to other fauna and flora in natural systems. A final section deals with recent applied research related to halophytes and quantification of the impact of man on the ecology of halophytes. This text will be useful for various disciplines working in saline wetlands ecosystems. It is intended to serve land use planners, federal and state natural resources and transportation interests, and real estate developers in providing a comprehensive summary of the ""state of the art"" in understanding halophytic ecosystems. With a better fundamental knowledge of the system, the above mentioned professionals should be better able to plan activities and uses compatible with the natural halophytic ecosystem and avoid some of the past errors man has made.

Book Distribution of Environmental Plutonium in the Trinity Site Ecosystem After 27 Years

Download or read book Distribution of Environmental Plutonium in the Trinity Site Ecosystem After 27 Years written by Thomas E. Hakonson and published by . This book was released on 197? with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 3rd international congress of the International Radiation Protection Association meeting; Washington, District of Columbia, USA (9 Sep 1973). Results are presented for a radioecological survey of the Trinity Site environs, where the world's first (July 1945) atomic bomb was detonated. The temporal behavior of the low environmental levels of the plutonium produced by this detonation are discussed. The data from this study were compared with similar data obtained in the Trinity Site environs nearly 20 years ago. The major change which was observed was an increased migration of Pu into the soils. Concentrations of Pu in vegetation and rodents were too low to make valid comparisons. (auth).
