Book excerpt: This screenplay (unproduced so far and perhaps forever) was written in the grayish dawn of the Reagan Era and is a satire, not only of the man and his Dark Age nostalgia, but of the inadequacy of his opponents. And of the times; of the Punk Rock, New Wave, post-Disco, pre-Rap, nascent-MTV 1980s. And, ultimately, it is a zombie movie to make George Romero's ears bleed.

Book The Psycho Records

    Book Details:
  • Author : Laurence A. Rickels
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2016-09-06
  • ISBN : 0231543492
  • Pages : 243 pages

Download or read book The Psycho Records written by Laurence A. Rickels and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-06 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ?The Psycho Records follows the influence of the primal shower scene within subsequent slasher and splatter films. American soldiers returning from World War II were called "psychos" if they exhibited mental illness. Robert Bloch and Alfred Hitchcock turned the term into a catch-all phrase for a range of psychotic and psychopathic symptoms or dispositions. They transferred a war disorder to the American heartland. Drawing on his experience with German film, Hitchcock packed inside his shower stall the essence of schauer, the German cognate meaning "horror." Later serial horror film production has post-traumatically flashed back to Hitchcock's shower scene. In the end, though, this book argues the effect is therapeutically finite. This extensive case study summons the genealogical readings of philosopher and psychoanalyst Laurence Rickels. The book opens not with another reading of Hitchcock's 1960 film but with an evaluation of various updates to vampirism over the years. It concludes with a close look at the rise of demonic and infernal tendencies in horror movies since the 1990s and the problem of the psycho as our most uncanny double in close quarters.

Book excerpt: When Victor Tookes went to work that beautiful spring day, he never expected to see a man eaten alive in the street in front of his office. After convincing himself that they really were zombies, he makes a trip from his house in Pennsylvania to his family home in Virginia, battling zombies all the way. His three and a half year old son was bitten on the leg, but doesn't turn into a zombie. Instead, he turns into something more than human. Victor quickly discovers that everything he knew about zombies was wrong. Not all of them were mindless, uncoordinated, rotting ghouls; some of them were bigger, faster, stronger or smarter than when they were human. A small percentage of humans are genetically immune to the parasite. Instead of turning these humans into mindless shamblers, they gain enhanced abilities. These new abilities will be pushed to their limits in their quest to carve out a safe haven to call home. How will he keep his son safe when the world crumbles around him?
