Book excerpt: In the summer and autumn of 2006 I read several interviews with Brian May in which he mentioned his desire to complete the PhD that he had abandoned in 1974. I looked up the papers he had published while a PhD student, which were on spectroscopic studies of the motion of the dust responsible for the zodiacal light, and felt that there was a basis for a thesis. Since he had been a student at Imperial, I knew, as Head of the Astrophysics Group at Imperial, that it would be good for the Group if he came and worked with us. I got in touch with him by email and suggested he come and talk about it. He replied enthusiastically and said that he was working on typing up what he had completed by 1974. I gradually realized that I was the only staff member at Imperial who had previously worked on zodiacal dust, so that I would have to act as his supervisor. Eventually we met and I tried to assess whether he would be able to find time for the huge amount of work that finishing off a thesis involves, particularly if it has not been touched for over 30 years. Since some of Brian’s emails were coming from the recording studio I knew there was strong competition for his time.

The Workshop was the natural evolution of the two previous ones. The main goal of the first edition (Erice 1984) was to start a scientific interaction between Astronomers and Computer Scientists. Aim of the second (Erice 1986) was to look at the progress in data analysis methods and dedicated hardware technology. Data analysis problems become harder whenever the data are poor in statistics or the signal is weak and embedded in structured background. Experiments collecting data of such a nature require new and non-standard methodologies. Possibilistic approaches could be merged with the statistical ones, in order to formalize all the knowledge used by the scientists to reach conclusions. Moreover, the last decade has been characterized by very fast developments of Intelligent Systems for data analysis (knowledge based systems, ... ) that would be useful to support astronomers in complex decision making. For these reasons, the last edition of the workshop was intended to provide an overview on the state of the art in the data analysis methodologies and tools in the new frontieres of the astrophysics (y-astronomy, neutrino astronomy, gravitational waves, background radiation and extreme cosmic ray energy spectrum). As such, it was a hommage to the scientists, engineers and technicians who conceived, built and operated this extremely successful satellite. That this was generally felt to be the case, was proven by the large number of participants (over 200 from seventeen different nations), the li vely discussions, and the great variety of topics presented during the meeting. All this not withstanding a typical Dutch summer: gale-force winds, heavy cloud cover, and meter-high surf crashing onto a beach on which only the hardy ventur. ed. Most participants contented themselves by watching the lonely seagulls patrolling the North Sea coastline through the panoramic windows of the conference center. Parallel to the IRAS Conference, a Workshop on Infrared Properties of Interstellar Grains was organized by J. M. Greenberg of the Leiden Laboratory Astrophysics Group: a busy shuttling of participants between the Workshop room and the Main Conference Hall showed that many found it hard to choose. A large number of people were invol ved in making the Conference a success: in the first place the scientific organizers with their valuable advice and the conference speakers, among which I would like to mention Dr. J. H.
