Book Zircon Zirconium Zirconia Similar Names Different Materials

Download or read book Zircon Zirconium Zirconia Similar Names Different Materials written by Bożena Arnold and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, you will find a lot of exciting and often astonishing information about these extraordinary and diverse materials. The presentation is essentially chronological and follows the history of the discovery of these materials. Their properties and areas of application are described along the way. The book represents a mixture of technical and non-fiction book: understandable for experts and laymen. Three different materials that are often confused because of their similar sounding names. Zircon is an ancient mineral and has great geological significance. It is a genuine gemstone and similar to diamond. Zirconium is the 40th chemical element and as a metal it is characterized by extraordinary properties. For example, it is permeable to thermal neutrons. In addition, there is a group of special zirconium alloys, e.g. zirkalloy. Zirconia is a special modification of zirconium oxide, is only produced artificially and, like zircon, is similar to diamond. Zirconium oxide itself is one of today's most important high-performance ceramics, with a wide range of applications in dentistry or in a lambda probe, among others. This book is a translation of the original German 1st edition Zirkon, Zirkonium, Zirkonia - ähnliche Namen, verschiedene Materialien by Bȯzena Arnold, published by Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature in 2019. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors. The Author Dr. Bȯzena Arnold (formerly Boczek) is professor emerita of materials engineering at the HAW Hamburg University of Applied Sciences and has many years of experience in imparting materials engineering knowledge.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1903 edition. Excerpt: ...the high refractive power and hence play of colors of the latter. The stones are sometimes called "Matura diamonds," because of their abundance at Matura in the island of Ceylon. The colorless, or smoky zircons, are often known as "jargons" or "jargoons," a name said to have been given in allusion to the fact that though they resembled the diamond in luster they had really much less value. Besides zircons of this sort there are those known in jewelry as "hyacinth" or "jacinth," which are transparent zircons of a brownish, red-orange color. A stone of a nearly similar color is furnished by the essonite variety of garnet, and this is also often known as hyacinth. The high specific gravity of zircon above referred to is more than four times the weight of water, determinations giving results varying between 4.2 and 4.86. Zircon is thus the heaviest of gems, and will sink at once in any of the ordinary heavy liquids. The hardness of zircon is between that of quartz and topaz, being 7 . Its index of refraction is high, being 1.92, or near to the diamond among gems, a fact which accounts for its brilliancy when cut. Before the blowpipe zircon is infusible. It is not acted upon by acids except in fine powder by sulphuric acid. In composition it is a silicate of zirconium, the percentages being silica 32.8, zirconia 67.2. It usually also contains a little iron oxide. It is not an uncommon mineral in rocks, occurring in crystals of microscopic size, and in crystalline rocks it sometimes occurs in large and abundant crystals. These are usually opaque and of no value for gem purposes, although they are mined to some extent at the present time for use in incandescent lights. Opaque zircon is found...

Book Life as We Made It

    Book Details:
  • Author : Beth Shapiro
  • Publisher : Basic Books
  • Release : 2021-10-19
  • ISBN : 1541644158
  • Pages : 313 pages

Download or read book Life as We Made It written by Beth Shapiro and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2021-10-19 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the first dog to the first beefalo, from farming to CRISPR, the human history of remaking nature When the 2020 Nobel Prize was awarded to the inventors of CRISPR, the revolutionary gene-editing tool, it underlined our amazing and apparently novel powers to alter nature. But as biologist Beth Shapiro argues in Life as We Made It, this phenomenon isn’t new. Humans have been reshaping the world around us for ages, from early dogs to modern bacteria modified to pump out insulin. Indeed, she claims, reshaping nature—resetting the course of evolution, ours and others’—is the essence of what our species does. In exploring our evolutionary and cultural history, Shapiro finds a course for the future. If we have always been changing nature to help us survive and thrive, then we need to avoid naive arguments about how we might destroy it with our meddling, and instead ask how we can meddle better. Brilliant and insightful, Life as We Made It is an essential book for the decades to come.
