Book The Disney Song Encyclopedia

Download or read book The Disney Song Encyclopedia written by Thomas S. Hischak and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2009-07-29 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Songs written for Disney productions over the decades have become a potent part of American popular culture. Since most Americans first discovered these songs in their youth, they hold a special place in one's consciousness. The Disney Song Encyclopedia describes and discusses hundreds of famous and not-so-famous songs from Disney films, television, Broadway, and theme parks from the 1930s to the present day. Over 900 songs are given individual entries and presented in alphabetical order. The songwriters and original singers are identified, as well as the source of the song and other venues in which it might have been used over the years. Notable recordings of the song are also listed. But most important, the song is described and what makes it memorable is discussed. This is not a reference list but a true encyclopedia of Disney songs. The book also contains a preface describing the criteria for selecting the songs, a glossary of song terms, a list of all the Disney songs and their sources, a songwriter's directory in which every song by each composer/lyricist is listed, a bibliography, a guide to recordings and DVDs of Disney productions, and an index of people and titles.

From hot dog dispensers to helium pants and python-repelling cheese hats, Rosie's creations would astound anyone—if only she'd let them see. But Rosie is afraid of failure, so she hides her inventions under her bed. That is, until her great-great-aunt Rose (also known as Rosie the Riveter) pays her a visit. Book excerpt: A novel of ambitions and desires thwarted in a small Texas town, Dancing with Lyndon brings the early 1950s to life. Living in a small conservative and racist town, Thomas Patterson, a stiff young criminal lawyer, is running for state district judge and hoping for endorsements from either the governor or young Lyndon Johnson, who's running for the senate. Thomas's stay-at-home wife and their teenaged son Tommy are satellites to his grandiose political aspirations. But all hopes for a substantial political career are dashed when a black client Thomas successfully defended against a charge of the rape of a white girl kills himself, leaving a note confessing to the crime. The town turns against the Patterson family, jeering, threatening, and even vandalizing Thomas's car. The menacing atmosphere only adds to the tensions escalating within the family. Mary Lee, Thomas's dreamy, restless wife, can't quite grasp why she is so unhappy but knows it has something to do with Thomas's reliance on logic and reason to the exclusion of all emotion. Impulsively, she seeks the advice of a gypsy woman who foretells temptation, change, and someone to show her the way. Fourteen-year-old Tommy is caught between his parents' conflicting unspoken demands and struggles to make his own way and his own decisions about life. As tensions mount, he alternates between concern for his parents and the forbidden, budding attraction he feels for the daughter of a gypsy woman. All the protagonists' desires and ambitions come to a head at a barbecue where Lyndon Johnson is scheduled to speak. Thomas's political career takes an unexpected turn, Mary Lee finally understands where her desires can lead her, and Tommy comes to see his parents in a new light.

Book Forbidden Animation

Download or read book Forbidden Animation written by Karl F. Cohen and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tweety Bird was colored yellow because censors felt the original pink made the bird look nude. Betty Boop's dress was lengthened so that her garter didn't show. And in recent years, a segment of Mighty Mouse was dropped after protest groups claimed the mouse was actually sniffing cocaine, not flower petals. These changes and many others like them have been demanded by official censors or organized groups before the cartoons could be shown in theaters or on television. How the slightly risque gags in some silent cartoons were replaced by rigid standards in the sound film era is the first misadventure covered in this history of censorship in the animation industry. The perpetuation of racial stereotypes in many early cartoons is examined, as are the studios' efforts to stop producing such animation. This is followed by a look at many of the uncensored cartoons, such as Lenny Bruce's Thank You Mask Man and Ralph Bakshi's Fritz the Cat. The censorship of television cartoons is next covered, from the changes made in theatrical releases shown on television to the different standards that apply to small screen animation. The final chapter discusses the many animators who were blacklisted from the industry in the 1950s for alleged sympathies to the Communist Party.
